How often in life do you get a chance to meet (or nearly meet) someone you've JUST SAID you wanted to meet?!! How cool is that?!

No sooner had I mentioned that I would someday like to meet Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series, than I found myself with a real-life opportunity! PaleyFest Outlander was held March 12, 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Cast members Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and Tobias Menzies were there, as well as executive producer Ronald Moore and author Diana Gabaldon.

Although my seat was too far away for me to meet Diana in person, seeing her on the PaleyFest panel was the next best thing!

Caitriona and Sam played an on-stage version of “The Newlywed Game,” with lots of coaching from Tobias. There was a lot of joking around, but there was never any doubt that these cast-members have great comaraderie and good chemistry. I don’t see how the cast could do the difficult tension-filled scenes required without a genuine regard for one another.

Tobias Menzies answered that he is keen to keep the differences between Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall “subtle” and that the costumes help him assume each character’s traits.

Audience members asked Caitriona if her family watches the show, and like it. She responded that her mom tells her all the time that she’s enjoying the show. But she only hears “crickets” from her dad! (Her sister told her that her dad has watched every episode and appears to be enjoying it, even if he can’t talk about it!)

When asked which character on the show they would each like to play, Caitriona answered “Black Jack,” Sam answered “Black Jack,” and Tobias answered “Black Jack!” [The joke, to those of you unfamiliar with the story, is that Tobias plays Frank Randall AND Black Jack Randall!]

The audience was treated to a sneak preview of episode 9, airing April 4th. It was so much fun being surrounded by a packed theatre full of die-hard Outlander fans. We cheered, laughed and ooohed, right on cue, and applauded mightily. The many hints dropped by the panelists about upcoming scenes were not lost on the true Outlander fans, like me, who had read every book!

Moderator Kristin Dos Santos, from “E” started the panel off with a round of a made-up Scottish drinking game she dubbed “Ne'er Have I E'er.” By the end Caitriona was a bit tipsy and no one was feeling any pain. It was a clever way to get both the panelists and audience to relax, with some hilarious results. By the time they were asked to drink if they had ever giggled during a sex scene, all three of the cast members were providing sip by sip hints about upcoming scenes.

Equally fun for me to seeing the author and cast in person, was an email exchange with Diana, in which she suggested that if I was unable to get close enough to get her autograph on my "Oh Jamie” scrapbook page at the event, that she’d be happy to sign it afterwards, and I had only to mail it to her!

I wondered if the actors would be embarrassed to come out on stage right after we had seen (spoiler alert!) a very intimate sex scene that left nothing uncovered, but they were all quite good-humored about the whole thing. I can’t think of when I’ve had a more enjoyable just-for-me evening out and I’m so glad I attended!
