Journaling: We usually have one brood of Luna Moths here in May or June. I took this photograph in 2011 and this one was the only one that I saw that year. The Luna Moth is universal in its appeal, and arguably the most gorgeous moth in North America. The wingspan reaches up to 4 1/2 inches. In 2002 our entire carport was filled with them . . . I am sure that there must have been at least one hundred of the beauties. The host tree includes sweet gum & walnut which are both close by our house. The adults are very strong flyers and are attracted to lights, which is probably why we see them in the carport often. No matter how often I see one of these beauties, it is like seeing one for the first time. When I was a Girl Scout I remember finding one dead and saved it in a little cotton lined jewelry box for several years until it fell to pieces.
