• How to Use Black-and-white Papers Creatively in Photoshop and PSE

Digital kits that contain black-and-white papers are a lot of fun because the papers can be used so many different ways. You can get a whole new look and many, many uses out of these kits by exercising a few creative options.

The simplest option is to use the papers as they are designed black-and-white. I love this look with brightly colored photos. The neutral background really makes your photos pop. It's also a great look with black-and-white photos for a monochromatic color scheme.

Another option is to recolor the paper to match your photos or to coordinate with another kit. This option increases your digital paper stash, since recoloring can allow you to use the papers with any kit you have. As you file your digital supplies, you may want to consider cross-filing black-and-white papers with overlays or create a new category for them. When you are working with a kit and need a different paper, you can go to this category to find a paper that can be colored to match your project.
To quickly recolor, just open the black-and-white paper.
Double click the layer name (Background) and choose OK.
Press Ctrl U (Mac: Cmd U) on the keyboard to open the Hue/Saturation dialog.
Tick "Colorize" and "Preview" then move the Lightness slider to the right.
Move the Hue and Saturation sliders to recolor the paper to get the color you need, then click OK.

Black-and-white papers can also be used as overlays on top of textured, patterned or solid papers.
Open a piece of digital paper and a black-and-white paper.
With the Move tool, drag the black-and-white paper on top of the digital paper.
With the black-and-white paper selected, change the blending mode at the top of the Layers panel. Try Overlay or Soft light. Experiment with different modes to get the look you want.
This works well on textured papers, striped or distressed looks and allows you to create a patterned paper that matches any kit you are using for your project.
