• How to Make Multiple Copies of a Layer in Photoshop and PSE

Here’s a quick tip to help you speed up your workflow when you want to copy a layer several times. Begin by selecting the layer you want to duplicate. Hold the Ctrl and Alt keys then press and hold one of the arrow keys. (Mac: Cmd Opt Arrow key.) As long as you hold the keys down, Photoshop and Elements will continue to create duplicate layers. In just three clicks, you can have a stack of copies.

If your layer is a Background, unlock it first by double-clicking the layer name and changing it to something other than Background to avoid an error message.

These copies will be slightly offset. If you want to make duplicates stacked directly on top of one another, use the shortcut Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J to make copies instead.
