In Photoshop, there are usually a few different ways to get where you are going. For example, when you encounter a locked layer in Photoshop or Elements, there are several ways to unlock it.

Try these methods to see which one works best for your own workflow. If you’ve been taking the scenic route, one of these ways may be the expressway to get you there faster:

1.    Drag the lock icon on the layer to the trash bin at the bottom of the Layers panel.

2.    Alt double-click (Mac: Opt double-click) the layer name.

3.    Double-click the layer name to bring up the New Layer dialog box. In this box you can rename the layer, choose a blending mode and change the opacity all in one place. Click OK.

4.    Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J) on your keyboard. This makes a copy of the layer. Now you can drag the locked layer down to the trash bin.
