With digital art, you can have your cake and eat it too! If you like the pattern of one paper but the texture of another, you can combine the two to create a unique background for your digital project.

Begin by opening two digital papers in Photoshop or Elements. Get the Move tool and drag one paper on top of the other paper. Holding the Shift key as you drag will perfectly center the one document on top of the other.

Select the top layer. Remove the color by pressing Ctrl U (Mac: Cmd U) on your keyboard. Slide the Saturation slider all the way to the left. Click the Blending Modes drop-down menu above the Layers Panel. It is set to Normal by default. Choose a blending mode like Overlay or Soft Light to combine the two papers.

Take it one step further by tweaking the shadows and highlights. Move the shadow and highlight sliders found under:

Photoshop:  Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights.  
PSE:  Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Shadows/Highlights.

Blending papers allows you to have the best of both worlds – a pattern you love and texture you want in the same image.
