When you want to crop one layer of your layout without cropping the entire document, first select the layer you want to crop.
Get the Marquee tool and drag out a selection around the portion of the layer you want to keep.
Press Ctrl + Shift + I  (Mac: Cmd + Shift + I) on your keyboard to select the Inverse.
Press Delete or Backpace on your keyboard to delete the section of the layer you want to erase.
