Layers are automatically generated when you drag one document on top of another. You can also create a new transparent layer by clicking the "Create a New Layer" icon in the Layers Palette. You will need to select Window from the Menu bar and then make sure Project Bin is checked. If it isn't, click on it to bring up the Project Bin at the bottom of the page. Now when you open PSE, your Project Bin will be at the bottom of the screen.
To drag one item on top of another:
- Open two items. For instruction purposes, we'll say a digital paper and a digital photo.
- You'll see thumbnails of the two open images in the Project Bin below the editing window.
- Get the Move Tool.
- Double click the digital photo in the Bin to make it the active one (in the large window.)
- Position your cursor over the middle of the digital photo.
- Click the cursor and keep holding the clicker as you drag down until you are directly over the digital paper in the Project Bin.
- Let go of the clicker.
- Now the template will become the active one and the digital paper will be on top of it. In the Layer Palette, you'll see the digital paper with the digital photo on top of it.
