This mini lesson focuses on how to use the layer masks feature of ADOBE PHOTOSHOP AND PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 9 AND UP. It is not for users of Photoshop Elements 8 or earlier versions. If you are using that software, please check out the tutorial called “How’d They Do That? No. 17: PSE Layer Masks.”

You will learn how to:

  • create layer masks
  • alter layer masks to combine layers nondestructively
  • create a custom sepia tone image
  • use linear and radial gradients
  • use keyboard shortcuts to improve your workflow
  • and much more!
This lesson includes:
A 14-page, full-color pdf with screen shots (in PS CS4 & PSE9)
Two papers, one stacked vintage frame element, one photo wrap, and one pressed flower, all designed by Katie Pertiet

You will need:
Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 9
Adobe Acrobat
A photograph

While I do provide every step necessary to complete the techniques, it is helpful to have some experience with opening and closing files and a basic knowledge of the Photoshop Elements workspace. File Size: 9MB

This tutorial is very detailed, as well as crystal clear: screenshots are provided for each step in both photoshop and elements. The result was amazing, and this single tut made me understand many of the possibilities offered by PSE. Thank you very much, Cassie!!!

Really enjoyed this tutorial. First thing I made that I felt so professional. Easy to follow directions, love the look. I have done other tutorials and this is one of my favorites.
