Abbi’s always been interested in the crafty stuff, and
never hesitated to try her foot at sewing, baking, scrap-
booking, crocheting or knitting. For Christmas she’d
received a pair of size 17 needles and a knotty ball of
yarn. She made short work of it and started a scarf for
herself immediately. It worked up quickly.

Years ago, when she had asked me to teach her how to
knit, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. After all, I was a
right-hander trying to teach a left-footer how to cast
on and knit away. I guess it sank in at some point, be-
cause I’ll often catch her toeing through knitting
magazines or looking longingly at the varied yarns when
we go to the fabric store.

This time dolly Samantha, never far from
Abbi’s realm, looked on in vacant approval.
