On Saturday, I found a jelly candy (from an old Gingerbread kit) half eaten on the stairs. On Sunday I found another one --- and I’m thinking mouse. But then, later on Sunday, the neighbors asked to borrow some ice skates and I opened the door and saw a bushy tail scoot under the stairs. We exchanged the skates for a trap, which the squirrel immediately sprang without getting caught. I was NOT liking going downstairs. I REALLY wanted the squirrel out.
On Monday morning, the boys were on break and I asked them to go open the basement door to the bulkhead (I was that squeamish) and I opened the bulkhead and stood watch. The boys then tried scaring it out by playing Josh’s trombone and my clarinet really loud. No success. I stood silently in the trees while the boys played in the snow out front. I made a trail of peanut butter crackers. The squirrel would peek out and run back in. And I waited. And it all might have gone faster if there weren't moments in which . . . all was quiet and then "MOM! Joshua threw snow at me." One time, I turned to check on my arguing boys and slammed my head into a branch and fell on the ground --- I was more worried about missing any bulkhead action than I was about the lump on my head. I HAD to know if it left and I didn't want any more critters going it. After 1 hour and 35 minutes, he (or she) stopped poking his (or her) nose out and finally made a break. A very happy moment for all concerned. February 2008.
