As much as I dislike shopping at an American mall or department store, it is in direct proportion to how much I enjoy browsing the open-air markets in other countries. There’s something refreshing about the colorful contrast of fresh fruit, brightly packaged candies, and pottery. It was a great reminder for all of us that each culture has its own beauty and way of life. The children listened with interest as their uncle barterd with each shopkeeper for the best price. Sometimes it got loud as they all pretended to argue and be offended that we would counter-offer such a low price, and most of the time they would finally sigh in resignation and say “But for you, ma’am (looking at me), because it is your first time here and you seem nice.” While I am sure they would not have sold it at less than cost, it was funny to hear it put that way.
