Journaling: Last week the weather channel confirmed what everyone in the area already know. This was the worst winter ever. In fact, it was so bad that Toledo was ranked #1 as having the worst winter. How did they reach this conclusion? Here’s an excerpt from their site:

We ranked cities with a population of at least 100,000 in the West, Midwest and Northeast against each other, calculating a composite "worst winter index" for each city based on the following data:

December-February departure from average temperature (cold metric)
Departure from average season snowfall through March 18 (snow metric)

Cities that made this list were generally both very cold and very snowy, relative to what one would expect in an average winter. Several cities that were notably cold or snowy, but not both, narrowly missed the top 10 list. The lower the worst winter index, the worse the winter.

Given these metrics, Atlanta did not make the top 10 list. However, this is not to discount the gridlocked mess from Winter Storm Leon or how Winter Storm Pax a couple of weeks later shut down the city again.
