You knew I had to do it, right?

Journaling: For the first time since the 2000 season, Florida State played for the national championship on January 6, Jameis Winston’s 20th birthday. As it turned out, we ended up playing Auburn, the SEC champion, after they beat Alabama with a thrilling last-minute touchdown. Although we were an 8.5-point favorite, the first half was nearly all Auburn. Their defense was in Jameis Winston’s face constantly, and their offense was successful in confusing our defense. Finally, late in the first half, we faked a punt and got a first down which later turned into a touchdown, shifting momentum to our side. Jimbo must have borrowed a halftime talk from Bobby Bowden because the third quarter belonged to us. We held Auburn scoreless. In the fourth quarter, a 100-yard punt return by Levonte Whitfield gave us our first lead of the game. But on their next possession, Auburn marched down the field and scored, helped by the absence of Timmy Jernigan in the middle of our defensive line. With just over a minute left in the game, the pressure was on. Jameis Winston showed why he won the Heisman by directing a drive that ended with a touchdown reception in the endzone by Kelvin Benjamin. When Auburn got the ball back, there were 13 seconds left on the clock, too little time for a comeback. It was a nailbiter, but the Seminoles came out on top 34-31 to win their third national championship in the last BCS title game. Jameis Winston became the first freshman to win the Heisman trophy AND and national championship. I’d say that makes for a pretty good birthday present. 01.06.14
