To get out of Berlin meant another drive along the transit motorway and another interrogation about whether we were smuggling ‘kinder: out of East Germany. Then we made our way to Hamburg, to explore the Messehallen district where the walls were plastered with posters for iconic kiwi musicians The Clean and Chris Knox. In the city centre there were posh malls, and on the notorious Reeperbahn in the red light lots of dodgy shops as well as the Cavern club where the Beatles used to play. The next day we stopped in Bremen, checking out the “Town Musicians” statue and the mummified corpses in the Cathedral crypt.
