It was a relief to safely cross the border into Greece after passing through Bitola (and seeing the remains of Roman Heraklea through a fence!). Were weren’t entirely sure we were heading in the right direction until a border post loomed out of nowhere. We drove to Florina and Kastoria, then ended up on a dirt road where we had to stop to rescue a tortoise making its very slow way across the road. Our planned destination was Konitsa, but the town was packed out with a political rally so we drove on to Ioannina. That was even more festooned with flags and banners but we eventually managed to find a room. We ate takeaway kebabs and chips and wandered the old part of the town, finding Lord Byron Street and the 11th century walls (with Turkish additions) which we were able to freely explore.
