day 1 in Florence

This was definitely a highlight. Driving through the city to get to the campground was hair-raising, but it was worth it. We camped right next to the Piazza Michaelangelo, just across the river from the heart of the city. We walked there across the Ponte Vecchio, through the tourist trap of a market then to Piazza della Signoria. At first I was disappointed that the piazza was fenced off with a wire fence, until I realised there was an archaeological dig underway - and right by my feet was a skeleton surrounded by pottery. We walked through the Uffizi Gallery, then the cathedral ... then more churches and markets.
