Lycoris radiata - Red Spider Lily
It happens so fast, and is a sure fired indicator that fall is on the way. Where do they come from (because no leaves give any hint that they are hiding underground)? One day the little bullet shaped tips are pushing up through the mulch. By day 3 or 4 the stems are 12” tall and the red blossoms with their wispy tendrils unfold. Their beauty is a fleeting thing and, quickly as they came they begin to fade. The Little Yellow (Eurema lisa) takes full advantage. Clamping her wings tightly together, she drinks her fill.
