The Ponts des Arts is a pedestrian bridge across the Seine in Paris that links the Institut de France and the central square of the Palais de Louvre. From a distance, the bridge has an odd, irregular glittery look to the side railings. As we drew nearer I could see that the sides of the bridge were completely covered with locks. Some were fastened to the metal mesh of the bridge and others were fastened to other locks. The metal was covered for the entire span of the bridge. These are Love Locks. Couples write their names on the lock and clip it to a bridge. No one is quite sure how or why the custom started.
