This is the leading page for the Istanbul section of the scrapbook. The main photo is of the Hagia Sofia which is more than 1400 years old. The clipped stack photos are of Maiden's or Leander's Tower (on an island in the Bosphorus), Istiklal Street near Taksim square where the recent protests were held, mosaic from the Church of St. Saviour in Chora which houses some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world, a street vendor selling fruit and a "little prince". By Islamic custom, little boys are circumcised between the ages of 5 to 7. They are dressed in lavish costumes for the occasion, a big party is held and the little boy gets money and gifts. Sort of a cross between First Communion and a Bar Mitzvah. I hope this last bit of info doesn't offend anyone. Travel is a broadening experience and teaches us to respect that other cultures have different traditions from ours. TFL
