“Why,” ask my friends, “did you take pictures of flowers in Germany and France? It’s not as if we don’t have flowers in the States.” I don’t know, really, but there is something comforting in the familiarity of the blooms in a different land. And yet, they are different, too. I think it is the quality of the light. These colors were so rich it was if you could reach out and lick them, as if the colors would have a taste unique to them.
I resisted the impulse, because one of the things I did not want to experience on my trip was a German prison or a French lunatic asylum.
