This was I guess the beginning of the time when I realised I could achieve whatever I set my mind to. I joined with seven of the local 12wbt girls for a challenge where we bravely said we would climb a mountain. Mt. Abrupt in the Grampians was chosen, the day was selected and as we gathered at the base and looked up, and despite my bravado, I had serious misgivings in my ability. These 48 year old legs would surely not carry me to the top of that mountain. But carry me they did. Slipping through gravel, scrambling over rocks, holding onto tree limbs for support, hoisting up boulders, amazing views, lungs screaming, legs aching, laughter ringing out into the air, each of us encouraging the other but still going at our own pace. And there was no sweeter moment for me than reaching the summit. The air was cold, the wind whipped about us, but I was invigorated and at that moment, looking out across the neighbouring mountain ranges, I felt alive for the first time in a long long time. Flushed with achievement I realised I had no limitations. I had lost 20 kilograms, climbed a mountain and life really truly was beginning for me.
