Journaling:On December 15th, I had planned to go to Memphis to see my niece dance in The Nutcracker. She was dancing the part of one of the Marzipans. David and I had discussed this and he had decided to stay in Conway with Carl. So, I made arrangements to spend the night with my brother and his family. Because I was spending the night, we decided to go to the evening performance.
So, Saturday arrived and I was getting things ready to go. David mentioned that he might have changed his mind, but he was not decided. (His sister lives in Memphis and this was going to be the only opportunity to see her during the holidays because she would be visiting her son out-of-state over Christmas.) Since this was the first I had heard of this plan, I had not made arrangements to board the dog. I kept on with my preparations and he went back and forth - to go or not to go, that is the question. Finally I said, I am leaving in 15 minutes. If you are going, be ready. We had a very nice, uneventful drive to Memphis which is about 3 hours for us. David dropped me off at my brothers and went on to visit his sister as ballet is really not his thing.
The ballet was a huge success. I had forgotten how fun the Nutcracker is. Chloe danced in the party scene, then was one of the mice and finally, her moment in the spotlight came as the three Marzipans danced. I am admittedly biased but I thought she was very good. It was also fun to see a production by a local company where the part of Clara was actually danced by a little girl. Professionals did dance the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier. Afterwards there was an opportunity for photos.
But needless to say, by the time the performance was done, the photos, taken, and the “star” escorted home where she could finally have dinner, it was close to 10:00. David and I got back in the car and headed home. About the time we crossed the Arkansas River, the fog set in. We were able to average about 50 miles per hour on the trip home. It made for a very long day! So for my book purposes, the ballet pictures are also going to count as the pictures for the 16th of December too.
