In our neighborhood the days of December really start in November. We all hope for a mild weekend or two in the eleventh month of the year. It is the time to look lovingly at one’s spouse and say those dreaded words, “Honey, it’s time to put up the outdoor lights.” This year, the weather was in the 70’s and it was a little disconcerting to be thinking of Christmas decorations while sitting on the deck in shorts, tank top and flip flops. But it beats those years where I have wondered if we would freeze to the bushes. David pulled out the ladders and began his yearly lament as he climbed up on the roof with the strings of light. It goes something like this: “This is the last year, absolutely the last year! I am getting too old for this!” as he meticulously places and spaces the roof clips. Then we outline the yard and the flower beds. We are not alone in our endeavor; the same scene is being repeated up and down our street by other families. And then we wait. Thanksgiving night finally arrives. At dusk, the timers kick in and the neighborhood lights up like the Magic Kingdom. The Christmas season is officially under way.
