journaling:

it is tradition that on december first the electric candles are placed in every window and lit for the first time that season. at four o’clock in the afternoon, just before the early winter sunset tiny lights begin to appear not only in our windows but those of our neighbors. it is a greeting of sorts during a cold and busy month that often finds us inside and not having any other contact with them. aside from the occasional glimpse of a twinkling christmas tree these are the only lights visible from the street. it is as if a dickens' village has come to life. on christmas they burn all day and are lit for the very last time on december 31st when they burn through the night and welcome in the new year. today a light snowfall added to the festive holiday feel.
