Our Christmas tree is steeped in family tradition. Each year, we put up the tree the day after Thanksgiving. Michael brings it down from the attic, then sets up the base. My job is to set it up, fluffing the branches as I go. I intertwine lights through the branches, until I achieve a sparkling glow from 1,000 twinkle lights. The ribbon is my least favorite part of the process, but it makes such a beautiful presentation. Then Jake helps me carefully unwrap all the Hallmark ornaments. We reminisce as we go, remembering the signficance of each. Then I stuff the branches with holly berries and golden twigs. After Michael puts the angel on the top, we stand back and soak in the sparkle. It marks the start of our holiday, and kindles our spirits.
