Another heritage page for the book I am hoping to make. It is of my grandfather who was injured twice in WW1 but returned home to Australia. I remember him as a happy, fun loving grandpa, although he must have been affected by the horrors he lived through. He was involved in some famous battles, and it was great to be able to look up his war records and find out more about his active service.
Journalling reads:
My maternal grandfather saw active duty in Europe during WW1. This photo was taken in Egypt where many young Aussie diggers did their initial training before being sent to Gallipoli and the Western Front. Herb was part of the 35th battalion. He fought on the Western Front around Messines and was involved in the Battle of Passchendaele. Later his battalion turned back the German forces at Villers-Bretanneux
