We met a new friend this Christmas season. Jackie the elf arrived on the first of December and was found in various spots around the house throughout the month. I had a lot of friends who were jumping on board with this new tradition, inspired by the holiday book “The Elf on the Shelf.” It sure sounded like fun, and I decided that we’d play along.
Kristin and Kaira did enjoy it, and so did I...though perhaps not as much as I had thought or hoped that we would. Maybe at ages 7 and 5 they are just a little old to begin a game like this. Maybe we were just busy enough during the Christmas season that we couldn’t really continue to pay close attention to another daily activity. Or maybe the girls’ concept of Christmas has already been established as primarily a celebration of the incarnation of Christ. We are not ‘Santa Bashers,’ but we’ve never really emphasized that part of Christmas tradition very heavily. We’ve let them take the lead, and we’ve had some fun with it at times, but we’ve never encouraged it strongly.
I think Jackie will return next year to share in some more Christmas fun. I’m comfortable with him being on the periphery of our celebration.
