Mollie had a wonderful idea to use Katie's map on a heritage page and I knew this would be a fun one. Thanks Mollie for the inspiration.

Sometime between 1880 and 1883 Areens and Bertha Erdmann left Germany with their five children and headed to America. Julius the youngest in the family who was Grandpa Wayne’s grandfather was born in 1883 in the United States of America. I think this photo must have been taken around 1895. The whole concept of them picking up their family and boarding a ship for a land they knew little about seems surreal to me but that is exactly what they did. It must have taken a tremendous amount of courage and strength to do this. I am so grateful that they made this journey. They ended up in Minnesota and that is how our family came to be Americans...something that we are so proud to be.
