Tonight, tucking you into bed (the time you come up with your zingiest zingers), you said “I’m having the best life ever.” I think I had to pretend I didn’t understand just so I could hear it again. Then I got teary. “Don’t cry mom,” you said and and touched my face. I had to figure out how to explain what I was feeling. “Jake, someday, when you have a boy or girl, you’ll understand that what you just said is the very best thing you could ever tell a mommy or daddy.” You said, “I know mom. But I keep trying to tell you. I’m never going to get married.”
