A few years ago I got a small box of dad's personal effects in the mail. What struck me was that from everything accumulated over his 70 some years, this picture of mom was 1 of his cherished items. I allowed myself to dream of what his thoughts might have been whenever he looked at this picture. So in my words, the journaling goes like this:

When this picture was taken, we had just met. I fell in love with you from that first kiss. While I was away fighting in the Korean war, you waited for me and when I came home, we married. Life was not always easy for us, but we stood by each other through the good and the bad. Raising our 6 children could not have been an easy task. I don’t know if I ever really told you what a wonderful, caring mother you were in my eyes. It seems like our life together went by in the blink of an eye. So many dreams had not been realized, so many words left unsaid. I want you to know how much I love you and if I had it all to do over again, I’d ask you to be my wife without hesitation. You are gone, but never forgotten.

It's funny how much more we appreciate our parents after we have become parents ourselves.
