Anyone who's ever had the dubious pleasure of giving a cat a pill knows the process is no fun for either the pill giver or the pill receiver. I have often gone to work with long scratches on my arms because my cat and I had a serious disagreement on the protocol. The poor cat in this photo has had her share of pills (she has several ongoing health problems, probably the result of months of living on her own as a kitten), and in my mind I imagine that she says this as she sticks her tongue out at me: "I don't WANT no stinking PILL!!!" every time she has to get one. Her name is Scruffy, because as a stray kitten she was small, scrawny, scabby and flea-bitten. She was a stray in our neighborhood and she was eventually caught by one of our neighbors who thought she might make a good companion for their older, sedentary cat. Huge mistake--HUGE!!--but that is a story for another time. We, my husband and I, have a reputation of being animal lovers, and after having this poor, frightened kitten in their home for less than a week (I did mention that it was a huge mistake, right?), our neighbors came to us and said they were taking her to the local animal shelter, unless a suitable alternative could be found...I suppose the fact that we named her, paid her exorbitant vet bills, photograph her, give her pills and make scrapbook layouts about her gives you a hint as to the "suitable alternative" that was reached.
Question for you all: does anyone know how to spell the sound that is made by a "raspberry"--you know, when you stick out your tongue and blow through your lips? That's what I was going for with "Pffffft" but I think there should be at least one "s" in there. Whaddaya think?
Note added later: Beckie (mungerre) found this cool website that discuses the raspberry. It would seem that mine is an accepted spelling, but there are several other worthy candidates, including "THBPBPTHPT!" from Calvin and Hobbes. Thanks, Beckie!
