Journaling:
I said from the beginning
that I was not going to let people treat you like “a unit.” You were two different people who happen to look alike, but that was it. I purposely did not name you rhyming names or even give you the same initials. We never called you “the twins” and made sure that we took you places separately so that you didn’t have to do everything with your brother. I wanted you to feel like the individuals that you were. Besides making sure you didn’t have names that rhymed I made sure that I never dressed you alike. You did have a few shirts that were the same style, but different colors (back then manufacturers didn’t think there was a need for a big variety of boys clothing). I would sometimes dress you in these for a photograph on your birthday or special occasion, but usually you both picked out what you wanted to wear and dressed yourself and you never picked the same things. I always felt good about it . . . feeling that I had done my best to help alleviate some of the pressures and frustrations that might occur growing up an identical twin.
Not long ago I came across this picture. It is of the two of you in front of our house in Germany.
