For the Scrap Challenge, Week 3. Like so many others have said, I find heritage pages a challenge. But I'm so glad I've finally finished this one - it was nice remembering my grandfather and putting down some thoughts regarding what his "late-in-life hobby" meant to me, and maybe, what it meant to him.

Journaling:
(from top left):
Papa was an Aggie. As a younger man, he smoked a pipe. He played football in college, but never graduated. Papa was a cabinetmaker, a whittler and a “doodler.” Seated in his favorite chair, he diligently worked the daily newspaper crossword puzzle. Papa was an oil-worker in Bay City, Texas. He was a great traveler. But until 1982, he had never baked a thing.

(largest text on right):
At age 76, Papa started baking things: plum cake, a dense pound cake he called “Westerner Cake” (that neither my mother nor I can ever seem to get right nowadays), pecan pies, and all sorts of cookies—including snickerdoodles and a favorite family recipe of his mother’s called “spitzbubens.” I thought it was the grandest thing in the world, and I looked forward to going to Papa’s house every day after preschool; he always had something he had baked “just for me.” At age four, I didn’t pause to think much about the “why” involved in my grandfather’s new hobby. WHY did Papa suddenly take up baking so late in life?

Curious, I asked my mother, “Why did Papa bake?”
And Mom replied, “I think he baked because he missed Granny. . . he missed the sweet smells in the kitchen that he associated with her. . . and because he wanted the simple joy of sharing food with the people he loved. His grandchildren loved sweets. So he baked.”

Yikes, almost forgot the list of supplies! (All DD):

I absolutely find the story of your grandpa starting his new hobby at age 76 so encouraging and inspirational......it reminds me that each phase of our life can be interesting and full of the joy of giving.....and, is there any gift more meaningful than to share tasty recipes with your family? The 3 parts of your journaling give us a full picture of your grandpa....the when, what and why....I think it's a brilliant page!
