The O’Briens, Earls of Thomond, lived at Bunratty Castle from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and the presently restored interior looks much as it did then. We attended a splendid four-course medieval banquet in the “Main Guard”. It began with a mead reception and included entertainment by the Bunratty Singers. Along with the astonishment we felt at sitting inside a castle tower house built in 1425, in the same place where minstrels of the day sang and told stories, we had a really good time! We ate with our fingers and our “daggers”, and sang along with the live music. Earlier in the day we visited the Bunratty Folk Park, a recreation of a late 19th-century Irish village. The individual buildings and thatched huts are original structures that were moved to Bunratty; one was saved during the construction of the nearby Shannon Airport.
