Journaling: This old jail, built in the 1700ís, has become a monument to Irish freedom. At one time, it housed more than 8,000 prisoners in only 400 cells; from petty theives (many of whom were victims of the famine, including children) to heroes of the Irish resistance to British rule. When the leaders of the 1916 Uprising were executed in the courtyard, it caused a national uproar that eventually led to Irish independence.
