So, Shannon and I were in Phoenix at a showcase a couple of weeks ago... at a showcase tournament, coaches move the roster around alot to get all the girls on the field to play for the college coaches attending. These tourneys are not so much for winning, as for exposure for the girls. That said, Shannon has never not started a game... and this one time the coach didn't start her, the Air Force coach was there watching... grrrrrrr... luckily, speaking to her coach the other day, AF is still interested in her, so all was not lost! It just didn't appear that way the day of the game... I was very upset... JOURNALING I SIMPLY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT IT WENT DOWN THIS WAY. That’s Coach Grossman sitting on the sidelines of your second game at ECNL Phoenix. I had informed Sean that Air Force had promised you they’d watch “one full game” and here he was. The problem, however, was that Sean decided to start all the girls that never start. And, he decided to play them for a good part of the game, too. Which would’ve been fine with you at any other game... just not this one! So, Air Force now had the impression that you aren’t a starter (you are) and you don’t play a full match (you do). I was so angry and so sad for you... yes, I shed a few tears at that game ‘cuz I really thought this would completely destroy your chance to play at the Air Force Academy. I really felt this would end that dream... but, it turns out, Sean spoke with Coach Grossman after Phoenix and you are still on their recruiting list. They weren’t concerned at all about the playing time; Sean assured them you were one of his starting eleven and one of his strongest players, too. He also assured them you have a mean left foot... after they observed you to be a mostly “right-footed player”. (What the...?) *smiley* So, I guess you are still in the game, Missy! There's a certain aspect of a project I'm working on that keeps failing and I'm beyond frustrated. I'm trying to cut a piece of DNA from one place and paste it somewhere else. Normally, this process is very cook-book, but every now and then it fails. Even less infrequently, the failure is epic. Lucky me, I have an epic failure. Sigh. So, I started this page with intent to just let loose and vent, but instead I ended up making a completely different kind of page, a kind of ode to DNA. I think I just needed to get away from the bench for a while and do something fun! Thanks for the wonderful challenge, Mel! The journaling on this page is a sort of a brief description of how DNA encodes information, and that even with a limited "alphabet" it can still lead to unique individuals. I chose the colors I did for the letters because we use those colors in the lab when we're trying to read the sequence of the letters in DNA. Okay, once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more...this time I know it will work! :) Credits Anna Aspnes ArtsyBlendz Origins Paperie Cassie Jones How'd They Do That? Journaling: The letter Q is certainly not the MVP of the alphabet. In fact, it is usually “riding the pine” right next to the X. However, in our house the Q seems to take center stage. Your dad named you and I happen to love the name as well. When we told people you would be named “Quinn” if you were a boy, we got some mixed feedback. Most people said they loved the name. When we told GMa, she had a blank look on her face. You see she always finds a special bible verse to go with each letter of her grandchildren’s names. She knew immediately that Q would be a tough one. Rest assured, she did find one though. Then there was Grandpa Wayne, we realized that when you received your first card that he had “troubles” with the letter Q. His Q looked like the number 2. When I asked him about it, he said “what does a Q look like”. When I showed him, he responded with “when did they start making them like that” (I’m not kidding). The next item you received clearly showed that Grandpa Wayne was trying...he had an “O” with a slash through the top. He is a work in progress. At home, you have come to many nicknames because of the Q. My favorites are Q-ball, Q-school (golfing term), Q - bert and just plain Q. Fritz, our neighbor took a trip to a motorcycle convention last summer and came home with a tiny motorbike that he insisted that he had to get for you because it had your name on it...”Q-50”. When compared with the rest of the alphabet, the Q takes a back seat but that certainly is not the case around here. Our Q is front and center....our Q has three women doting on him all day long, our Q spreads happiness and sunshine...not to mention a couple of dimples wherever he goes, our Q is full of energy and likes to be in the middle of everything. There is no doubt about it...the letter Q is a special letter and it fits you perfectly. Credits: K. The individual components of written speech. In themselves, they seem innocent enough, and yet an A implies excellence whereas an F the exact opposite. And when strung together into words, the potential for good or evil is infinite. They can make our hearts sing, or crush them forever. This actually started out to be a "spread the love" page. With very little effort, I was able to come up with a kind word or compliment for every letter of the alphabet. But I soon realized that the potential for damage exists in those same letters. It only depends on how we string them together. I didn`t think there was another one of them all together. I love heritage pages and script and slightly fancier basic fonts!! Loved the challenge as it also got another page done for my heritage book. Squash paper by Anna Aspnes recolored and showcase template by Anna Aspnes. Check it out and join in! Designer Details So, yes, my title is a play on words... not only does it have to do with the story (it's actually a BIG part of the story!), but my dad always, always has a twinkle in his eye... he's got a wonderful sense of humor! Can you see the twinkle in his eye? And, I must say, I had fun playing w/Anna's new "Art Play" kit... that's ALL I used on this layout! Kind of different for me, but totally fun! JOURNALING I find it pretty funny, really... you, who have never, ever used a computer in your life, has a favorite font! For years, you have relied on Mom to type (on the NON-electric!) type- writer whenever you’ve needed to create documents for your work on the church board. But, one day, the secretary at work typed something for you... using the Comic Sans font. And, from then on... no more typing from Mom! Which I’m not sure made her happy or sad... at any rate, the church secretary would type for you and always use Comic Sans. At one point, a few years back, I designed a 3-fold flyer for you and you strongly suggested, of course, that I use Comic Sans! Every time I see the font, I think of you, Dad!
