Copied myself for the layout design. Made it quick and easy. Journaling: After church, we picked up pizza for lunch. Not everyone was happy about our pizzeria choice. Our conversation naturally turned to our favorite pizza places. Everyone named a favorite place or two. Then Josh chimed in. “My favorite pizza is the homemade kind.” I was surprised to hear him say that. I don’t make homemade pizza often because the crust takes a lot of effort (or at least in my mind it takes a lot of effort). Now that I knew it was Josh‘s favorite though, maybe I should go the extra step and make it more often. I’ve learned it’s always best to clarify these conversations though. “Really?! You like homemade the best?” ”Yeah. You know like Digiornios, that kind of pizza.” My bubble burst pretty quickly. Hey, if that’s the kind of homemade he likes than I suppose I could bake those once in a while too, despite the Herculean effort frozen pizza takes to make. Whever it snowed, we shoveled the driveway and added to the pile. The only trouble was that the snow never ended. It compacted and melted slightly so that the snow pile soon become an ice pile. Not exactly snow fort material. For some reason, we kept adding to it anyway. The last major snowfall was in mid-March. Then something miraculous happened. It actually started to shrink. By the first of April, it was just a baseball size dot of snow. Looks like spring will arrive after all. Unless it’s an April Fool’s joke. This was the worst winter ever. In fact, it was so bad that Toledo was ranked #1 as having the worst winter. How did they reach this conclusion? Here’s an excerpt from their site: We ranked cities with a population of at least 100,000 in the West, Midwest and Northeast against each other, calculating a composite "worst winter index" for each city based on the following data: December-February departure from average temperature (cold metric) Departure from average season snowfall through March 18 (snow metric) Cities that made this list were generally both very cold and very snowy, relative to what one would expect in an average winter. Several cities that were notably cold or snowy, but not both, narrowly missed the top 10 list. The lower the worst winter index, the worse the winter. Given these metrics, Atlanta did not make the top 10 list. However, this is not to discount the gridlocked mess from Winter Storm Leon or how Winter Storm Pax a couple of weeks later shut down the city again. Here is just one example. Every year, during the Pemberville fair, our church family is invited to the Mxxxxxxx for a cookout. When I was filling my plate, three year old Mxxxx came in and was gesturing to the cookies. Without thinking, I handed him one and then realized I probably should have okayed it with his family first. Later on, Mark caught a crayfish, put it in a plastic bottle and was showing it to the boys and whoever else might be interested. Mxxxx’s five year old brother Lxxx thought Mark was giving it to him as a gift. Since Mark didn’t want to hurt his feelings, he gave him the crayfish. See what I mean? This is the fabulousness of being married to Mark. Giving a cookie to a three year old is nothing compared to handing over a crayfish to his five year old brother. I was totally off the hook. The “boys” went down to the river to try and catch more but they didn’t find any others. Lxxx referred to the crayfish as his new pet and took it on a field trip to the fair. The first snow/ice day of the season had arrived and I thought I'd be nice and drive the older ones to school. Only problem? No scraper. Of course, I didn't really realize that until it was too late for them to walk. I started to use a gardening spade (yes, I was that desperate) but my neighbor came through for me. One of our sliding doors on the van was frozen. It moved enough to engage "the door ajar" beeping noise, but we couldn't shut it. So we were fortunate enough to have that as our musical accompaniment all the way to the high school. We arrived with a whole three minutes to spare until school started. My plan to do something nice didn't exactly work as I intended. So the moral of the story could be A) Be more prepared or B) Take advice from a literary classic and just move to Australia. The first one seems more realistic. However, a move to Australia would also mean that I most likely wouldn’t need an ice scraper in November. So, It’s a bit of a toss up really. His inner child lies very close to the surface. He still loves pranks, explosions and most things that your average 12 year old would. There’s three parts to the story. I’ll start with the second. 2. Mark decided to make pickles for the first time (nothing impish about that, he had lots of cucumbers and just decided to give it a go.) He was quite happy that it was so easy. All he needed was vinegar, sugar & pickling mix. 3. Mark and Josh (the actual 12 year old in the house) watched Youtube videos that featured chemical reactions. Tried out a few and were disappointed that none of them worked. Mark decided to go for the standard of baking soda and vinegar. Only that didn’t work either. Why? Let me tell you the first part. 1. Mark called all the boys in a few weeks prior and asked them if they dared him to drink a container of vinegar. He then proceeded to guzzle it down. Unbeknownst to his audience, he’d swapped the vinegar in the container for water beforehand. After he swapped it though, he inadvertently put the rest of the container back on the shelf, still half full of water. This explained why the chemical reaction didn’t work and why his pickles won’t be quite pickled. Looks like the prankster tricked himself this time.

19 comments Thu, 19 Sep 2013 13:50:06 +0000
