The draw this time? Video games of course; an exhibit of video games past and present. Austin, Caleb and I went together. I was finished quite early, so I went to the East Gallery. They were still in the exhibit. So I went to the West Gallery. I had just finished when they walked in. The exhibit was obviously a big hit with them. (Since we own some of the items that were featured, I guess I can now say that we own museum quality pieces.) Photos of the exhibit were taken from the TMA website. Don’t drink the water. Don’t boil the water. Don’t brush your teeth with the water. Not exactly the best way to start a Saturday morning. By the time we found out, we also found out that the water was sold out in area stores. Fortunately, we already had some bottled water on hand. By the afternoon, we ventured out; holding out a faint hope that there were some paper plates available. Not only were there a few of those left, the store had gotten some more shipments of bottled water as well. (There wasn’t a water line when we arrived but there was when we left.) All the sprayed produce had been cleared off the shelves. The weirdness continued until Monday morning when the advisory was lifted.

9 comments Sat, 09 Aug 2014 21:19:41 +0000 Come fly with me

by: tdavenport

Description}: Credits: Away We Go Element Pack Ali Edwards Layered Template No. 23 Smallest Airman Kit

3 comments Thu, 31 Jul 2014 16:44:34 +0000 Cool

by: tdavenport

Description}: Journaling: When I say cool, I’m not talking about the weather because that was down right frigid. Winter had struck again. Freezing temps and more snow. Eight inches of heavy, white stuff. Nate finished the walkway and we finished half the driveway together. We left the second half for the rest of the family. It was tiring and I was spent. Nate’s more resilient than me but even he was feeling it. Still, he had one more mission in mind. He thought our dog was getting tired of having to trudge through the snow. So he went out back and cleared out a pathway for him too. That’s what I mean by cool. I adapted it to fit more photos. Journaling: We pretty much ate our way through Holmes and Wayne Counties. First was breakfast (not pictured) where they served up homemade cinnamon rolls along with the traditional hotel breakfast fare. Then we took a trip to Lehman’s where we stocked up on candy, fudge, soda and other items. Next, was Hartzler’s dairy for lunch, ice cream and chocolate milk. Later, we stopped at Heini’s Cheese Chalet in Berlin. We sampled cheese and bought yogurt cheese and cheddar jalepeno. We ate dinner at Boyd & Wurthmann’s. Sadly, none of us felt like dessert by this point. (Their apple dumplings are amazing.) Lehman's had a fudge special (buy 4 pieces get 2 free). Since there were six of us, I figured it was meant to be. The soda doesn’t all fit into the “tasty treats” category. The bacon soda was revolting. Also, I should mention that although we purchased everything in one day, much of it was consumed later in the trip. Journaling: If we took a vote and asked the boys which one of them is the biggest sugar addict, Josh would win hands down. Mark and I were watching some older videos of the boys. Mark was videotaping toddler Josh and the two of them were having a conversation. I couldn’t help but laugh when Josh interrupted their banter to ask “Can I have a cookie?” I laughed even harder when Mark’s response was “You need to eat breakfast first.” To this day, Josh will still half-jokingly ask for sweets before breakfast. Half-jokingly because he knows the drill, but he would happily dig in if either Mark or I agreed to his request. This year, Austin was in charge. He secured the location, set up the electronic sign up sheet and created the end of the year video. (And like every good party planner, he stressed about the details, especially since they didn’t obtain enough grills until the last minute.) All went off well though. Also traditional is the senior recognition. This year, each of the three seniors were recognized for one of their quirky contributions. Austin updated and maintained the team’s website. He also decided that they needed a unique error page. He added video of one of the early robotic prototypes crashing into a wall with the phrase “we fixed it with a hammer”. It made sense that he was awarded the 404 error fixer hammer. Our conversation naturally turned to our favorite pizza places. Everyone named a favorite place or two. Then Josh chimed in. “My favorite pizza is the homemade kind.” I was surprised to hear him say that. I don’t make homemade pizza often because the crust takes a lot of effort (or at least in my mind it takes a lot of effort). Now that I knew it was Josh‘s favorite though, maybe I should go the extra step and make it more often. I’ve learned it’s always best to clarify these conversations though. “Really?! You like homemade the best?” ”Yeah. You know like Digiornios, that kind of pizza.” My bubble burst pretty quickly. This was the worst winter ever. In fact, it was so bad that Toledo was ranked #1 as having the worst winter. How did they reach this conclusion? Here’s an excerpt from their site: We ranked cities with a population of at least 100,000 in the West, Midwest and Northeast against each other, calculating a composite "worst winter index" for each city based on the following data: December-February departure from average temperature (cold metric) Departure from average season snowfall through March 18 (snow metric) Cities that made this list were generally both very cold and very snowy, relative to what one would expect in an average winter. Several cities that were notably cold or snowy, but not both, narrowly missed the top 10 list. The lower the worst winter index, the worse the winter. Given these metrics, Atlanta did not make the top 10 list. However, this is not to discount the gridlocked mess from Winter Storm Leon or how Winter Storm Pax a couple of weeks later shut down the city again. We were visiting family and had already been in the van for hours. We saw the signs that the road was closed ahead but hoped it would be closed after our turnoff. No such luck. So we took a backroad and stumbled across this cool covered bridge. I guess sometimes detours can be blessings in disguise. It’s lucky he has older brothers. The kids are required to wear black but charcoal gray will do in a pinch. Here is just one example. Every year, during the Pemberville fair, our church family is invited to the Mxxxxxxx for a cookout. When I was filling my plate, three year old Mxxxx came in and was gesturing to the cookies. Without thinking, I handed him one and then realized I probably should have okayed it with his family first. Later on, Mark caught a crayfish, put it in a plastic bottle and was showing it to the boys and whoever else might be interested. Mxxxx’s five year old brother Lxxx thought Mark was giving it to him as a gift. Since Mark didn’t want to hurt his feelings, he gave him the crayfish. See what I mean? This is the fabulousness of being married to Mark. Giving a cookie to a three year old is nothing compared to handing over a crayfish to his five year old brother. I was totally off the hook. The “boys” went down to the river to try and catch more but they didn’t find any others. Lxxx referred to the crayfish as his new pet and took it on a field trip to the fair.
