I have been stuck on it since Christmas. I took almost no photos at Thanksgiving this year, and it was a sad, off-kilter, weird kind of disoriented holiday. Journaling: Thanksgiving 2013 was the first major holiday we had together after my mom died. She died in August and the summer and fall were very difficult. Her birthday came quickly, the following October, and then Thanksgiving was upon us. My mom was particular about holidays. She set such a pretty table, and wanted all the food and condiments in nice bowls and dishes. We used china on Thanksgiving and at Christmas, and her fancy silver. We would share the responsibilities; she would always do the turkey, my sister would make the cranberry apple, and I would help with the side dishes and dessert. This year my whole family drove up to Maryland to have Thanksgiving together. My mom loved that I loved to cook; she would play with the kids and keep them busy while I fixed dinner. It was a great arrangement that I appreciated, too, because it gave me some down time to myself, and she had a chance to play with the kids. Because her kitchen was organized differently from mine, several times during a meal preparation I would walk into the living room and ask her, “Hey, Mom, where do you keep the . . . ?” or “Do you have any?” Still, today, almost a year later, I find myself getting halfway to the living room before I remember she’s not there, and I’m left to find the elusive spice, herb, or dish on my own. It is both frustrating and mind-numbingly sad. It’s the little things that take my breath away. This Thanksgiving I am convinced she would be laughing so hard if she saw how disorganized everything was. Jen went through everything in the months following my mom’s death and yet it seemed there were things we remembered Mom had that we couldn’t find. We looked everywhere for the ornaments for the Advent calendar, and I finally found them in a tiny jewelry bag in the dresser by her bed. I didn’t have the emotional strength to take pictures while we were there. It was a subdued visit, punctuated with laughter when we remembered something Mom would do or say. The grief was still too new to be tempered with humor, though, and the sadness was palpable. My mom wanted to be cremated and my dad keeps her urn in the dining room. My mom was the life of the party, and my sister wanted to carry on that tradition by decorating the urn. I think my mom would have laughed ‘till she cried to see her urn decorated with pink feathers, a huge pink flamingo, sunglasses, and party hat. I find it a little uncomfortable, but it comforts my sister, so why not go with it? My mom was the glue that held everything together. She was the peacekeeper, mediator, laid-back, easy-to-get-along with one in the family. She filled in the rough spots in our relationships, and always had the plan. If she didn’t have a Plan A, Plan B was, “Hey. Let’s go have some fun.” She was always doing something fun, and she loved all her grandkids so much. The first Thanksgiving and Christmas were so hard without her. We miss her so much and a year later, things aren’t that much easier. It’s still the little things that make me cry; every day something reminds me of her. I hope someday soon things will be easier. We saw a lot of wildlife. Besides the horses and the turkeys, we also saw a lot of deer. At first we were enamored, and craned our necks to see every deer we could. Often we would walk along a short trail and there would be deer wherever we turned. About halfway through, the deer became just another animal. The turkeys were entertaining; ugly and awkward, they trotted along and made their funny sounds. When we started the loop, I said, if I see a black bear, my whole day will be made. Maybe even my month! I love wildlife but am very rarely in the right place at the right time. About 85% of great wildlife photography is being there when the animal is. I was fairly pessimistic, but enjoying the drive regardless. Through the morning we heard reports from other visitors that they had spotted bear and bear cubs. Not us . . . then, when we were about a mile from exiting the park, we saw a bunch of cars pulled to the side of the road in front of us. We pulled over and I jumped out, asking what folks were looking at. Sure enough, there was a black bear, hanging out in a clearing by the road. There was a park ranger there making sure people didn’t try to get too close (not quite like approaching a turkey, I suppose!) and directing traffic. I had my long lens but not my L series, which is a much better lens. I did manage to get one great shot. I didn’t want to block other people’s views of the bear. About five minutes in, the bear hopped up on a fallen tree and posed. Seriously. He stood straight and still, turned his head toward the crowd, and stood quietly for about two minutes, then hopped down and wandered off back into the woods. I was so excited I couldn’t stand it. I know for people who live in the country it’s not a big deal to see a wild bear, but I’ve never seen one that wasn’t in captivity, and I love wildlife. It made my day!

11 comments http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=204407&title=black-bear&cat=500 http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=204407&title=black-bear&cat=500 Sun, 02 Feb 2014 19:36:40 +0000 John Oliver Cabin

by: dugarner

Description}: My family and my husband's parents took a trip to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge last spring. We had generally been sitting around trying to decide what to do (how my in-laws do their vacations) when I begged to go somewhere scenic. Friends at church had told us about Cades Cove and while it was about 40 minutes from where we were staying, we did it. My in-laws were thrilled and we much enjoyed our three-hour tour around the loop. Deer, turkeys, horses, and even a black bear! Journaling: Our first stop inside the park was to park and walk about 1/4 mile to the John Oliver Cabin, built by the first settlers in Cades Cove. John Oliver (1793–1863), a veteran of the War of 1812, and his wife Lucretia Frazier (1795–1888) were the first permanent settlers in Cades Cove. The Olivers, originally from Carter County, Tennessee, arrived in 1818, accompanied by Joshua Jobe, who had initially persuaded them to settle in the cove. While Jobe returned to Carter County, the Olivers stayed, struggling through the winter and subsisting on dried pumpkin given to them by friendly Cherokees. Jobe returned in the Spring of 1819 with a herd of cattle in tow. While we were looking at the cabin, a deer came by the fence. She was so close I could have reached out and touched her. She got very close to Bailey and Bailey watched her for a long time before the deer walked off. The ranger said they are so used to people, and so non-threatened, that they hang around crowds all day. It is tearing me up. This is the left side to my "Her Size is Diminished in Me" layout. Supplies: Katie Pertiet DelMar Shores Kit Lynn Grieveson Worn Page Edges No. 4 Katie Pertiet Vintage Frames No. 29 Journaling: If I had made this page four years ago, when I made my first few layouts for this book, this page would have been so much different. I have always loved my mom, but her role in my life over the past decade or so has been focused on being an amazing grandmother to my children and a very wise mom of a grown daughter. It is hard to articulate what a mother means to you, especially when you’re not the type to write poetry or tell flowery stories. She was very transparent; what you saw was what you got; there were no games, no manipulation, no appeals to emotion or guilt trips. Always avoiding confrontation, she was so easy to love and always the life of the party. Six months later, the grief that covers me comes after the simple things. Finding a great deal on a pair of shoes; using a good coupon at Macy’s; trying a new recipe that was a flop; making a huge batch of peppermint bark popcorn. I cannot articulate my love for her, but many friends have said again and again that they know how much I loved her, because of the depth of my grief at her loss. The sadness is still very new, and not at all welcome. June of 2013 brought the worst news we had ever endured as a family. In 2007 my aunt died after a short fight with cancer. It was a shock, but we had nearly a year between diagnosis and her death. My grandmother fell asleep the day after her 98th birthday, and slipped away peacefully. Again, we were sad, but she had lived a long, full, faithful life, and we could say goodbye. My mom thought she had been fighting pleurisy for a couple months. Finally, they did a CT and found the spots on her liver and the tumor on her pancreas. Metastatic pancreatic cancer, stage IV, no treatment. To say we were shocked and in disbelief would be an understatment. She was only 74! We thought we had another 25 years together. But there is no guarantee, no promise of tomorrow. Five weeks later, she closed her eyes for the last time. The day before my 40th birthday, I said goodbye to my mom, until we meet again on the other side of this life.

15 comments http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=204115&title=mom&cat=1766 http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=204115&title=mom&cat=1766 Tue, 28 Jan 2014 01:00:32 +0000 All About Me, 1st Challenge

by: dugarner

Description}: I made a commitment to start and finish an AAM album this year. I have never heard her speak of any experiences. I believe these unexplained phenomena are real, but they are not benevolent. They are not to be pursued, or to fascinate, but are to be guarded against. When my mom told me last summer about the experience she had with this photo, I shrugged it off. I know what can be done with Photoshop, and I am very wary when it comes to finding mysteries in photos. I rarely believe what I see anymore. One of my mom’s cousins was surveying some family land, abandoned for at least a generation. No one has lived on the land, nor have any squatters occupied the land or the buildings in as many years. When the photo was taken, no one else was there. It was a clear, sunny day; no weather, no cloud cover. No one but the cousins. Straight out of the camera, no editing at all. They are not technologically savvy enough to make changes to the photo. My mom couldn’t explain exactly what she saw in the window on the bottom floor of the house. I am sure it’s lens flare . . . I think. All I know is, when I saw the picture, the hair on my arms stood on end. It still does, and I haven’t looked at the picture again until now. I choose not to dwell on it. Bailey did it twice when she was younger and my mom has been waiting for the summer when Jake could do it. They take them as young as 2 but you really need to be 4 or 5 to enjoy it. It took Jake a few minutes to get used to the idea, then he jumped right in. He wore some pirate gear and got a "tattoo" of a fire-breathing shark on his arm. The kids that work there are so much fun, and interacted with everyone. They boarded the ship and went on their adventure; first they found the map hidden somewhere on the ship, and on the way to the treasure they found "Pirate Pete," whom they bombarded with water cannon on the side of the ship. Then to the treasure, and finally around to the harbor to get a swig of Pete's Grog, which was root beer. He had a blast, and Bailey was involved, too, even though she was about two feet taller than all the other kids. Well worth the $19 a person if you're ever in Annapolis and need something to do with your kids. :) Or grandkids. The cardinal was at the absolute limit of my lens + cropping without losing quality. He's not tack-sharp but then again, I couldn't really see him. I need help---birds on the top row? You can see I "cheated" and left them mostly the way they were. I didn't have time to do anything of my own and still upload 100 pages to SF. Well, I got the book done and when I went to my cart, it said $140. Wow! Um, no. So I thought I'd try Blurb. Then today SF starts a new sale, and I got 25% off on top of their new sale, 30% off 12X12 and free shipping. So it knocked it down to $100. I'm going to proof the book and send it off in a couple of days. Sometimes good things come to those who wait. I thought I didn't have any pictures from yesterday, but I did. :) Hubby & I forgot the date until about 9:00, I texted him (he was in a meeting) and told him to grab some stuff on the way home. Bailey's favorite drink is Orangina, and Jake loves Matchbox cars. Luckily, our local grocery store carries both. But no traditional chocolate coins. That's okay. They were both excited to get a little something. I know that you usually put the shoes outside and the kids look for them outside, but we have a lot of raccoon, possum, and bear around. We didn't want some critter getting into the candy. Journaling: "We have tried to be consistent about observing St. Nicholas Day on December 6th. The evening of the 5th the kids put their shoes outside, hoping to have them filled with some candy. The tradition is to fill them with chocolate coins, but this year coins were hard to find. St. Nicholas was a 4th-century Bishop of Myra about whom many stories are told. He is a factual person, though the details have probably been embellished upon through the centuries. He was a wealthy man who sold most everything he had so that he could give to the poor. He particularly loved and cared for the poor children of Myra, and was known all over for his generosity. In 325, during the Council at Nicaea, which met to settle the Arian heresy, Nicholas got into an argument with Arius and, finally getting fed up, punched Arius in the face. He was then stripped of his bishopric but spent the rest of his life serving those in need. I love the stories about St. Nicholas, the true ones and the ones that might be a little embellished. He was a true man of God and we should live by his example. I don't know if I can catch up, and I almost threw in the towel today. I don't have a full-page photo for the 5th and 6th, so they'll be one-pagers. **Remember how the shadows on my other pages were so big? I was cropping each side without flattening the image first, and saving as a JPEG. This time I flattened all the layers first, then cropped the left side and saved as a JPEG. Voila, shadows are "normal." Does anyone know why that happens? Journaling: We have a few movies we watch every year around Christmas time. I tried to come up with movies that I remember taking place around Christmas that Bailey & I could watch together. I remembered always enjoying “While You Were Sleeping,” an early Sandra Bullock movie about a CTA employee (Lucy Moderatz) who thinks she falls in love with a man (Peter Callaghan) who rides the El in Chicago every day. He gets pushed onto the track on Christmas Day and she saves his life, but in the process he goes into a coma. In the confusion at the hospital, his family thinks she is his fiancee. She doesn’t correct them, and she becomes part of their family (in spirit) while they wait for Peter to wake up. While Peter is sleeping (in the coma), she falls in love with his brother, Jack. Many things happen in between, and it’s a good story about family, friends, love, forgiveness, and being content with what you have. What she thought she wanted turned out not to be the best thing for her. Bailey enjoyed it and has been quoting it ever since. The quotes don’t make sense out of context, but we have fun with them. “You can’t take back my nose!” “Hey, Luce, is this guy botherin’ you? 'Cause it looked like he was, you know, leanin’.” “You shouldn’t drink that. We've had cold, rainy weather here for the past two days and outside pictures are not options. Nothing happened yesterday or today . . . so I cheated. It's hard to fill two pages when you only have one photo! Journaling: Bailey has a love for sushi. Several years ago, she asked to try it. I was sure she wouldn’t like it. It seems like something very eclectic for a young child to enjoy. Even if I could eat rice, I wouldn’t like sushi because the nori is too bitter for me. Bailey likes sour and bitter things, so it’s right up her alley. She eats all the vegetable varieties, but her favorite is the salmon, cream cheese, and avocado. She also likes the crab, carrot, and cucumber variety. I don’t know what other kinds she’s tried, but she’s liked everything as long as it’s not too hot. I make sushimaki at home sometimes (with the rice on the outside), rolled in toasted sesame seeds. Bailey and Duane eat it as quickly as I can roll it. Duane saw this scarf on the web a few weeks back and asked me about it. I couldn’t find one to buy, but I have a friend who crochets very well and very fast. I showed her the pattern and she said she’d be glad to do it for Bailey, if I would donate the dollar amount to an organization that pays for adoptions for Down Syndrome children. So today I bought the yarn, and Emily will get started on the scarf as soon as I get the yarn to her. Put Bailey’s love of sushi and love of scarves together, and I think we’ll have a very appropriate Christmas gift! Photo of the scarves are not the one for Bailey, just examples of what it's supposed to look like. We've had cold, rainy weather here for the past two days and outside pictures are not options. Nothing happened yesterday or today . . . so I cheated. It's hard to fill two pages when you only have one photo! These are the yarns my friend Emily is going to use to make a sushi roll scarf for Bailey. I was in turbo mode, ran around, found a perfect $40 tree (cheapest one on the lot!), then let the kids play for a while. These shadows look much more subtle in Photoshop---I don't know why they're so huge on the screen here. Just letting you know I'm not going hog wild with the drop shadows. This isn't 2004 anymore. :) Supplies: Katie Pertiet Days of December No. 4 Templates Katie Pertiet Sweet St. Nicolas Kit Pattie Knox Felt Friends Polar Escape Pattie Knox Felt Friends Reindeer Dude Katie Pertiet Crystallized Edgers TFL!

14 comments http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=167390&title=december-daily-december-3&cat=1713 http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=167390&title=december-daily-december-3&cat=1713 Sun, 04 Dec 2011 13:04:16 +0000 December Daily December 3

by: dugarner

Description}: Today was our annual trip to the local tree farm to pick our tree. I was in turbo mode, ran around, found a perfect $40 tree (cheapest one on the lot!) in about five minutes, then let the kids play for a while. They rolled down the huge hay pile several times and generally made a mess.
