Pirate Adventures!

Bailey did it twice when she was younger and my mom has been waiting for the summer when Jake could do it. They take them as young as 2 but you really need to be 4 or 5 to enjoy it. It took Jake a few minutes to get used to the idea, then he jumped right in. He wore some pirate gear and got a "tattoo" of a fire-breathing shark on his arm. The kids that work there are so much fun, and interacted with everyone. They boarded the ship and went on their adventure; first they found the map hidden somewhere on the ship, and on the way to the treasure they found "Pirate Pete," whom they bombarded with water cannon on the side of the ship. Then to the treasure, and finally around to the harbor to get a swig of Pete's Grog, which was root beer. He had a blast, and Bailey was involved, too, even though she was about two feet taller than all the other kids. Well worth the $19 a person if you're ever in Annapolis and need something to do with your kids. :) Or grandkids. It was an unbelievable concert. We were way up in the balcony, the seats were great but far, far away. I maxed out my lens and my cropping capability. They're grainy but maybe "artistic." :) Noiseware Community edition did a great job cleaning these up. Scott Avett, the lead singer (in black) is also an artist of sorts. Today was a bird watching day and I couldn't resist sticking these in. Not the greatest shots, but still interesting! The cardinal was at the absolute limit of my lens + cropping without losing quality. He's not tack-sharp but then again, I couldn't really see him. I need help---birds on the top row? Thought the one on the left was a killdeer but it's not, and now I'm stumped. The one on the right looks like some elaborate sparrow, but it was bigger than a regular house sparrow. Any ideas? I had no idea there was such a thing, but I googled it and the horizontal black stripe on the lower wing (hindwing) identifies it as a viceroy. Thanks, Susan! You can see I "cheated" and left them mostly the way they were. I didn't have time to do anything of my own and still upload 100 pages to SF. Well, I got the book done and when I went to my cart, it said $140. Wow! Um, no. So I thought I'd try Blurb. Then today SF starts a new sale, and I got 25% off on top of their new sale, 30% off 12X12 and free shipping. So it knocked it down to $100. I'm going to proof the book and send it off in a couple of days. Sometimes good things come to those who wait. The kids played for a while and then we came home. We ran into another teacher from our school and her family, so my kids had someone to play with while we were there. Description}: Our local "only fun thing to do in September," the ArkLaMiss fair comes when it starts to cool off in the fall. People come from several states (hence ArkLaMiss) and hilarity ensues. Bizarre behavior, strange dress, police, lots of arrests . . . we always go the day it opens right at 5:00 and get out of Dodge before the weirdos come around 8:00. You don't want to be there after dark! If you follow me on Facebook (boy, that sounds arrogant!) you'll recognize the holding-the-snake picture. I showed my Mom and she almost threw up. She can't stand snakes, and doesn't know how I can even touch them. I don't think I copied this idea from anyone, but if you see your work here, let me know so I can credit you with the scraplift. Monroe Symphony Orchestra Right

Description}: I play in a small, local, community orchestra. Our woodwinds and brass all have performance degrees (MMus or PhD) but our strings are largely hobby players. Many have degrees as well, while others are just happy to have an ensemble to play in. We are one of the few semi-professional orchestras in the country (we are pay-per-service, not salaried/union) that has operated in the black continuously since founding. I play the viola and sit either principal or second chair, depending on whether or not our principal viola decides to show up for a concert. I love playing with this group, and this is my tenth season. This concert, a friend of mine used my camera and took pictures during the concert. It was our Emerging Artist concert and the concerto winner was a 16-year-old from south Louisiana. She was okay; she had technique but lacked maturity. Our truly phenomenal winners in the past have had both the technique and the mental and emotional poise of seasoned performers. The music on the paper behind the photos is excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, the piece we performed in this concert. Description}: St. Nicholas Day, or, Punch a Heretic in the Face Day! I thought I didn't have any pictures from yesterday, but I did. :) Hubby & I forgot the date until about 9:00, I texted him (he was in a meeting) and told him to grab some stuff on the way home. Bailey's favorite drink is Orangina, and Jake loves Matchbox cars. Luckily, our local grocery store carries both. But no traditional chocolate coins. That's okay. They were both excited to get a little something. I know that you usually put the shoes outside and the kids look for them outside, but we have a lot of raccoon, possum, and bear around. We didn't want some critter getting into the candy. Journaling: "We have tried to be consistent about observing St. Nicholas Day on December 6th. The evening of the 5th the kids put their shoes outside, hoping to have them filled with some candy. The tradition is to fill them with chocolate coins, but this year coins were hard to find. St. Nicholas was a 4th-century Bishop of Myra about whom many stories are told. He is a factual person, though the details have probably been embellished upon through the centuries. He was a wealthy man who sold most everything he had so that he could give to the poor. He particularly loved and cared for the poor children of Myra, and was known all over for his generosity. In 325, during the Council at Nicaea, which met to settle the Arian heresy, Nicholas got into an argument with Arius and, finally getting fed up, punched Arius in the face. He was then stripped of his bishopric but spent the rest of his life serving those in need. I love the stories about St. Nicholas, the true ones and the ones that might be a little embellished. He was a true man of God and we should live by his example. Description}: Okay, so now I'm really behind. I don't know if I can catch up, and I almost threw in the towel today. I don't have a full-page photo for the 5th and 6th, so they'll be one-pagers. **Remember how the shadows on my other pages were so big? I was cropping each side without flattening the image first, and saving as a JPEG. This time I flattened all the layers first, then cropped the left side and saved as a JPEG. Voila, shadows are "normal." Does anyone know why that happens? Journaling: We have a few movies we watch every year around Christmas time. I tried to come up with movies that I remember taking place around Christmas that Bailey & I could watch together. I remembered always enjoying �While You Were Sleeping,� an early Sandra Bullock movie about a CTA employee (Lucy Moderatz) who thinks she falls in love with a man (Peter Callaghan) who rides the El in Chicago every day. He gets pushed onto the track on Christmas Day and she saves his life, but in the process he goes into a coma. In the confusion at the hospital, his family thinks she is his fiancee. She doesn�t correct them, and she becomes part of their family (in spirit) while they wait for Peter to wake up. While Peter is sleeping (in the coma), she falls in love with his brother, Jack. Many things happen in between, and it�s a good story about family, friends, love, forgiveness, and being content with what you have. What she thought she wanted turned out not to be the best thing for her. Bailey enjoyed it and has been quoting it ever since. The quotes don�t make sense out of context, but we have fun with them. �You can�t take back my nose!� �Hey, Luce, is this guy botherin� you? 'Cause it looked like he was, you know, leanin�.� �You shouldn�t drink that. Description}: I am really struggling. We've had cold, rainy weather here for the past two days and outside pictures are not options. Nothing happened yesterday or today . . . so I cheated. It's hard to fill two pages when you only have one photo! Journaling: Bailey has a love for sushi. Several years ago, she asked to try it. I was sure she wouldn�t like it. It seems like something very eclectic for a young child to enjoy. Even if I could eat rice, I wouldn�t like sushi because the nori is too bitter for me. Bailey likes sour and bitter things, so it�s right up her alley. She eats all the vegetable varieties, but her favorite is the salmon, cream cheese, and avocado. She also likes the crab, carrot, and cucumber variety. I don�t know what other kinds she�s tried, but she�s liked everything as long as it�s not too hot. I make sushimaki at home sometimes (with the rice on the outside), rolled in toasted sesame seeds. Bailey and Duane eat it as quickly as I can roll it. Duane saw this scarf on the web a few weeks back and asked me about it. I couldn�t find one to buy, but I have a friend who crochets very well and very fast. I showed her the pattern and she said she�d be glad to do it for Bailey, if I would donate the dollar amount to an organization that pays for adoptions for Down Syndrome children. So today I bought the yarn, and Emily will get started on the scarf as soon as I get the yarn to her. Put Bailey�s love of sushi and love of scarves together, and I think we�ll have a very appropriate Christmas gift! 2011 World Series Champs!

Description}: Here it is, the left page of a two-page layout (right side is not done yet). All the photos are from the Cardinals' Facebook page . . . I didn't take them, as much as I would have loved to! The shadows look really big here on my screen, but they're much more subtle on the actual page. Folks who don't know me might not know that even though I'm from Baltimore, I've been a die-hard Cardinals fan for 15 years now. (Hubby converted me when we got married.) I was an Orioles fan through the Cal Ripken years, but lost interest in college. "This was, no doubt, a season for the record books. We are used to the Cardinals making the playoffs; they are a perennial contender for the division championships. This year, however, they were 10 1/2 games back in August. We wrote them off, figuring this would be one of the first seasons in regular memory that they didn�t make it to the playoffs. Then the Cardinals made a bet with themselves, and vowed to play every remaining game as if it were their last. They made up the gap, but were still 3 games back from the Wild Card slot with only 5 games to go. A mathematical miracle had to occur; on the last day of the season, their magic number was 2. That meant Atlanta had to lose and St. Louis had to win. And they did. On the final day of the regular season, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched the National League Wild Card slot. We started to dream. Duane had a ticket to Game 4 of the World Series, to be played in Arlington, Texas if the Rangers made it that far. He was excited to go, and this was before the Cardinals were even on the radar. The playoffs began, and St. Louis was up against Philadelphia. The Phillies won more than 100 games in 2011, the best record in baseball. Everyone said the Phillies would crush the Cards, and the run would end there. Just to prove the naysayers wrong, St. Louis went on to eliminate Philadelphia from the playoffs, winning the NLDS 3 games to 2. Then came the NLCS against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Redbirds came out on top in that series, 4-2. All of a sudden, it was real. But Texas is a great team, and an intimidating offense producer. What was going to happen? Duane was so excited, he couldn�t stand it. I had symphony rehearsal and a performance during two of the games. Duane would travel to Dallas on Sunday, October 23 for Game 4. St. Louis won the first game, 3-2, and lost the second, 2-1. It was shaping up to be a low-scoring pitching battle. I was relieved to see that Texas and St. Louis were so evenly matched. I was afraid it would be a sweep by Texas, but our boys fought hard. St. Louis took Game 3 in an embarrassing rout, 16-7, and Texas came back to win Games 4 and 5. Now the Cards were down 3-2 in a must-win Game 6. In the fifth inning, Texas had a 4-3 lead. Scoring went like a see-saw, until the ninth inning when Texas was ahead, 7-5. We were resigned, the game was going to end that way. We were wrong! David Freese, with two out and two strikes, hit a triple with two men on to tie the score at 7-7. Extra innings! In the 10th, Josh Hamilton hit a 2-run homer to put Texas up 9-7. Again, the Cards were down two runs, two out, two strikes, two men on. Berkman hit a single that tied the game up. Texas did not score in the 11th, but David Freese hit a walk-off home run to win it and St. Louis stayed alive for another day! Game 7 was almost an anti-climax, Texas� relievers fell apart and St. Louis scored two runs on walks, without even hitting the ball. And then it was over, Allen Craig caught the last out and the team and their families stormed the field. What a feeling! Truly a Cinderella season."
