It works really well for close-up out-of-focus photos like this one of Luke, paired with a recent conversation. "Wednesday 6 July 2011 ~ He had been to Baseball practice with his Dad. Lotís of running and catching and throwing had left him exhausted. The garage door swung open, he dropped his things on the laundry room floor and was immediately standing next to my work chair in the office, arms by his side, shoulders shrugged and those dark brown eyes staring right at me. I knew immediately what he wanted. The same thing he wants every night when heís tired, to be scooped up and loved and cuddled. He tugged at my chair so that I would swivel around just enough so that he could climb in my lap before nestling his head in the curve of my neck between my head and shoulder. His favorite resting place. He then said the most coveted words ever that can be said by a little boy to his Mom, ďMommy, I never want to find a wifeĒ. The manner in which he uttered these words was with such certainty, and almost disdain that someone might expect him to. He then went on to say, ďI want to stay with you foreverĒ. Gosh, I love that. Of course, I also know that one day heíll change his mind, but for right now Iím the number one lady in his life and Iíll take all the LukeeLove I can get for however long he is willing. Tucking this one away for keeps." In this particular case, I rotated my photo 90 degrees. It's been a while since I have played with the orientation of my photos. It can give an image a whole new look and feel. Journaling: It was the perfect day. Youíd been planning it and imagining it pretty much every day since youíre eighth birthday. Not sure what it is about birthdays you love so much. Perhaps youíre like me and just like to revel in your special day. As has become tradition, you picked a breakfast of French toast and then I took you for a surprise visit to Sweet and Sassy to get your hair and nails done. You loved your hair, so much so you refused to take it out for 4 days. I finally insisted that the hair had to be washed. By the time we got home Grandma and Grandpa had arrived and then came the cousins. We feasted on Dadís BBQ ribs and birthday sundaes before enjoying a beautiful Denver Summer evening in the yard, roasting marshmallows for smores and making a bed under the stars. You were popular with the mosquitoes that night with all that sugar in your blood but it didnít seem to spoil your fun. You said several times that night, and right when I tucked you into bed that night. ďMom, I wish this day would never endĒ. The same thing I used to to say to Mama when I was little. I gave the same response as she used to give to me, ďIt has to end so that you can look forward to the next one.Ē Hard to believe weíll be celebrating a decade of Ella next year. One of my absolute favourite ways to add depth to a scrapbook page. Journaling reads: In the brand spanking new Lego store in Park Meadows Mall, one hot Sunday Denver afternoon , you approach me with 2 large boxes of Lego that in sum were almost as big as you. Flashing me those dark brown puppy-dog eyes, you asked if you could have both. When I explained that you only had enough Christmas money for one set, your disappointment was clear. And so I decided to ask, ďWhat will you do for me if I make up the difference?Ē This had all come on the heels of an incident, where you had refused to participate in helping the rest of the family at dinner one night, which had resulted in a consequence that required you to set the table for breakfast and dinner for the next 2 weeks. Luke responded, very matter-of-fact, and innocently, ďI will set the table until I am a teenager.Ē Me: ďAnd what happens if you donít do that?Ē Luke: ďThen I will set the table until I die.Ē WOW. You REALLY wanted that Lego. You tugged at my heart in a way that only little boys can, but already in the car home, you were back tracking a little. You blurted from the back seat of the car. ďMom, I changed my mind. I will set the table until I get married.Ē Initially, I laughed as I looked over my shoulder into the back and caught a glimpse of your big cheesy grin, but then I thought, should I be worried? Are you just trying to be funny, and make me laugh, which is so very you, or are you already grasping the reality of marriage when one parent is home all day and the other isnít? 26 June 2011 Supplies: Artsy Edge Overlays No. 7 ArtPlay Palette Poppy MiniKit (recolored)

21 comments Mon, 27 Jun 2011 20:02:41 +0000 Little Poppet

by: annaaspnes

Description}: A name I remember my grandad called me. It seems like only yesterday that you were laying beside me in the bassinet in a hospital room in the Northern part of Japan. I remember I could not take my eyes off you. I marvelled at those then big blue eyes with a million thoughts, hopes and dreams racing through my mind. Ecstatic does not even come close. The day came to bring you home and I was terrified. Terrified of being alone with you , afraid that I wouldnít know what to do if you cried, but most of all I was was fearful that I would not live up to what you deserve as your mother. We brought you home early on Saturday morning, set you down on the dining room table in your carrier, and there you stayed, while Dad made us some bacon and eggs. We really had no clue what to do with you. You spent a lot of time in your carrier those first days, but as the days turned into weeks, the weeks accumulated into years, and your Dad and I have learned, are still learning, how to be the best parents we can. be. We are by no means perfect and we donít have all the right answers all the time but you totally inspire us to do be more each day. You in turn are blossoming into a thoughtful, caring and special young lady of whom couldnít not be more proud. I donít think Iíll ever be able to put into words how much we love you. I donít specifically remember wanting to be a princess but Iím sure did. Who doesnít want to be whisked away by a handsome prince? Weíre encouraged to think that way from an early age. I was as enchanted by the stories of Cinderella and the Princess and the Pea as Ella was at similar age. I was 7 when William was born. I remember we were vacationing as a family in Spain. He was born the same year as my cousin so the chances of me marrying the prince would be next to none. Lucky for me I was destined for my own fairy tale. A chance encounter, a very short courtship and a 2 1/2 year cross-continent relationship that brought me to America and a marriage almost 13 years strong. It hasnít all be been a bed of roses like itís pictured in the movies. Weíve had our fair share of ups and downs, as Iím sure any real prince and princess do. There are always unforeseen obstacles and stresses on a relationship regardless of who you are., but if you can still find happiness most of the time, then youíve found the gold at the end of the rainbow. I guess Iíve learned that you donít have to be a princess to be find your prince and be happy, and even if you are a princess, it doesnít guarantee you happiness. . Itís good to know that happiness transcends all humanity. There is still hope for any and everyone, and if not Prince Harry is still available. I think I'm finally growing up. Journaling: My 36th birthday. I received home-made gifts from Ella and Luke, got a long work-out in, and then was treated to my favorite salad at the White Chocolate Grill. It was fairly ordinary but amazingly special day spent with *my people*, and a true indication that I have finally discovered the extraordinary in the ordinary. My 36th birthday was the most remarkable milestone yet. It signified the realization of a long sought after goal of defining priorities and achieving balance in my life . There will always be more work to be done or money to be made, but when my children are grown, I wonít wish that I had worked more, Iíll wish I had spent more time with them. I am more than what I do for a living. The time is now. I donít want to have any regrets. I can honestly say I am living in the moment right now, enjoying each day to the fullest, for both me and *my people*, being the best I can be. Itís humbling and incredibly rewarding. Iím happier, theyíre happier, and in living more with less, I feel like I have finally discovered the true meaning of the American dream. Bliss is one heck of an awesome thing. This one is close to me as I suffered an eating disorder in my teens. It's one of those diseases that's sneaks up on you and takes hold without you realizing it. The person suffering from it is also the last to realize because they mentally are unable to see it when they look in the mirror. This week is timely as Ella has been making some remarks about her own body that concern me lately. I'm in thought about how to address those... We spent much of our childhood playing outside. It was encouraged by my parents to be active, use our imaginations, and breathe the fresh air outdoors. Of course, it was safe in those days, not like today when all mothers worry about someone snatching their child away, We lived on various Royal Air Force Bases in Germany close to the Dutch border. IRA terrorist threats during this time meant that all theses bases were heavily armed and cars entering the base were searched for undercarriage bombs. So, yes, I consider that we were relatively safe. I remember my Mum often saying to us when were were bored, or getting under her feet, ďGo play on the runway.Ē She didnít mean it literally, of course. It was her way of saying, go find something to do. We didnít have all the video games or non-stop entertainment that is available today. On demand TV and DVRs did not exist and so we had to use our imaginations a lot more, to entertain ourselves. Life was a lot more simple. The opportunity to build a snowman was an exciting adventure and even a luxury. And I canít remember even minding the cold that my two do. Times have definitely changed in the last 30 years.
