Small things that trigger times gone by & places I've been. I decided to make this image a 'save the image' & trash the real thing. Well, maybe not yet but soon. This badge was one of the many that Denise & I used to have when we worked at the MAACO-Maryland Association of Counties- conventions. I was really pleased when I was allowed to attend with her and each day we would take turns walking from booth to booth gathering these little stick-ons for our badges. It didn’t take me long to tire of this, just as the conventions got old after a few years. I loved talking to people but one day I realized that my face ached from the 8 hours of constant smiling. It hadn’t been forced but my facial muscles were exhausted as was I. This was one of those moments when I realized that I’d be ready to move on shortly. One a tragic teen suicide & the other the death of Dick’s Aunt Gladys aged 96. Gladys lived a long & productive life & was remembered as a happy, loving woman with a smile no one forgot. For Dick it was a chance for the aging cousins to get together & share memories. It reminded me of the funerals & wakes of my childhood when relatives would gather to share the stories. For the most part, those who had died had lived long lives so the atmosphere was a joyful celebration of their lives & others who had gone before them. At this funeral & the gathering afterwards at the house Gladys had lived in for over 70 years, there were four generations which led to a family event everyone said should happen more often without a funeral! There is nothing like family to make you feel that you belong to people & places. You feel the love. It's slow but not as many lives are being lost on a daily basis. The Anacostia branch of the Smithsonian was having an exhibition of how the Civil War changed Washington.. I wanted to see the area as so many of Vince’s family had lived there pre-intergration.. The BigChair remains & the view from the grounds of Ft. Stanton were spectacular. I noticed the fire engine outside as we toured the exhibit & sure enough we were escorted out. ??? We passed the girls school my nuns had started & where I was considering volunteering. Hopping back on, I got off at Long Wharfe & sat in the sun for a while, making a potty stop I took my Harbour Cruise. The weather was just perfect for being out on the water - just enjoying the views. We sailed down past the Federal Courthouse where the Bomber trial had just ended. Little had I known when I walked down there in 2013 that it would not be the ICA that became famous in upcoming years but rather the Courthouse that would be the site of the Whitey Bulger trial as well as that of the bombers. I have many memories of other trips to Boston over the years & enjoyed reliving those time. After finishing my cruise as the sun was setting, I joined some fellow Custom House residents for the Sangria evening. When I gave my free wine to another guest, I easily made a new friend! As good as the Spanish guitarist was, I was yawning & took my weary self to bed. A day outside makes me a sleepy baby. It was a very good day. Not too bad in my mind! We started with Indian food with Maria, a whole story. I made rice krispie treats for a party and I also made Dick some shortbread from a Dorie Greenspan recipe. for his birthday. However I didn’t read the recipe first. One day I had 2 pastas - lunch and dinner. All good even if one was Chef BoyArDee. We arrived at the Royal Taj but no Maria yet. The place was packed & no reservations. After waiting a while for her, I suggested we put our name on the list & not try to go to the other restaurant. In the end, Maria arrived, we only waited a bit outside in the wind & agreed this was one of the best ones around. Good choice! I try to make two weeks my max or I start to feel a stress I don't need or want. Crab cakes came from G&M near BWI airport. This week started with Easter Sunday. I picked the location, Harris Crab House since Maria is a vegetarian & Dick will eat most any kind of fish. It was a brisk, windy day so it was inside for everyone. I got the crab imperial & ended up trading my crab for one of Dick’s excellent soft shells. Maria had the imperial also. Dick & I both tried the cream of crab which was pretty glue like. We each got an ice cream dessert & they were rock hard, huge and delicious! The cool weather allowed the spring flowers to start emerging nicely. I had a very good session with Janie despite arriving 2 hours early. Dick got us crab cakes with huge lumps of crab the way a crab cake should be. I finally visited Ramsey at work at St. Johns. Mucho computer work for the Boston trip. Computer first, then clothes. Boarding pass in hand! That weather photo is at 10pm! that was freaky weather. For whatever reason, I didn’t document a lot this week. Dick was just back from his week in Myrtle Beach SC and it was a lot of catch up. He did have good bicycle weather as opposed to the temps we had. I turned the heat off on Saturday and it went down to 47 in the house! When Dick gets back, the heat always is on early in the a.m. Now I wonder if it will ever be warm enough for the orchid Crista gave me or warm enough to make the kombucha? I spent a lot of time cleaning out the Macbook getting it ready to give to Nong. / Monday was the first JSJ session with Janie since...winter? / Tuesday Dick to his car to Silverstar for a checkup. It wasn’t the usual 1k. :) I put a full load of laundry on the line, first time this spring! I finally found the rest of the Rhine cruise menus etc. Cleaning out has its own rewards sometimes! / Got my 3k steps in at the Mall but boy that floor is really hard on the heel. The cupcake lady enjoyed her cupcake. / Thursday Dick had bloodwork and went to lunch with Brad so I got an Indian carryout. The computer is running slow. I wonder how many days it’s been since I shut it down. :( / It looked like a real Good Friday day with overcast skies, wind and maybe a thunderstorm. That’s what I remember from my childhood. I moved the studio around getting ready for the air conditioner. I still really dislike seeing the wires at the back of the desk but until more stuff gets taken out, I don’t have too many options. I decided I would stay home and deal with whatever we got here and get to my Doctor’s appointments on time. Dick was not overjoyed to go out there and drive in more serious snow, in fact the snow was so heavy the night he arrived, he stayed in Denver and drove west the next day. The conference went well and he said that Boulder knows how to clear roads AND bike paths immediately. By the time he took this one photo, he also acknowledged that it really was beautiful. This is a very blurry shot but it brings back wonderful memories of my in laws visiting us in England. They came to babysit us while my xh and I went on a camping trip on the Continent. That is a whole other story and one which doesn't have any photos that I can find. But back to this image. My eldest son is sitting on his paternal grandfather's arm. It is late afternoon as the sun is coming in from the west. In his leopard pajamas, made by his maternal great grandmother, my son is holding what appears to be a stuffed animal. As it is not blue, is is not his beloved Teddy. What strikes me in this image is how so many beloved items stick in our memory, only to reappear in later years without conscious thought. I, too, now have a pair of leopard flannel jammies! The walls in our bedroom are painted the same dark green. I still have some of that Ethan Allen furniture in our living room. But what I really have is the memory of two people I love/d, together for a short time.
