Maybe later. Anyhow it was too nice to sit inside. So we went back to the Rossio and sunbathed with galaos, and watched other visitors. Despite our map reading and studying of the transit map, we could not find the bus to the Castle. When in doubt, ask, so I asked. Oh no...we are finally on 'the short bus'. It had to happen! But it takes us to the Castle! We arrive at the same time as several school groups. How much can we see before we flag? I'm so glad I didn't do a printed book! This day started out with some laziness after the dedicated sightseeing we had done earlier. However, we didn't want to drive since the long drive to Madrid was ahead of us and bustling about didn't sound so tempting either, so it was a read in bed and writing on the computer morning. Had it been sunny and warm, it would have been nice to laze about the pool, but that's for another season. By the time we were ready to hit the sidewalks, I had a surprise for Dick. It would be a Goan restaurant for lunch, in a different area of Lisbon, Anjos. We like to try various ethnic meals and even I had never had Goan food. I hoped it would be a treat! By now we had the Metro down almost-pat and were even able to zap our metro cards on our own! Woohoo! The Benfica sign (old UEFA memories for me) was a guide on our walk down to the zoo metro. The herbs in the garden are doing well and make up for the loss of all the rosemary last winter. We voted early and the rec center was plastered with signs. Sadly a low turnout. I got new Clark sandals from Zappos but one pair went back for another size. I now know the boxes do not fit in the pick up spots. Pierogis an easy luch for me with yummy tomatoes from Trader Joes. (I have to correct the spelling of her name. Spell check let me down! ;) I made this as a reminder to myself. Feel free to use it as your Wallpaper. "...the root of all conflict, all cruelty, oppression, and greed. ...shenpa. The usual translation is ďattachment,Ē but this doesnít adequately express the full meaning. I think of shenpa as ďgetting hooked.Ē Hereís an everyday example: Someone criticizes you. She criticizes your work or your appearance or your child. In moments like that, what is it you feel? It has a familiar taste, a familiar smell. Once you begin to notice it, you feel like this experience has been happening forever. That sticky feeling is shenpa. And it comes along with a very seductive urge to do something. Somebody says a harsh word and immediately you can feel a shift. Thereís a tightening that rapidly spirals into mentally blaming this person, or wanting revenge or blaming yourself. Then you speak or act. The charge behind the tightening, behind the urge, behind the story line or action is shenpa. You can actually feel shenpa happening. Itís a sensation that you can easily recognize. (Something happens) and boom. Weíre hooked. Itís a quality of experience thatís not easy to describe but that everyone knows well. Now, if you catch shenpa early enough, itís very workable. You can acknowledge that itís happening and abide with the experience of being triggered, the experience of urge, the experience of wanting to move. " Don't bit the hook. It was sad to see so many homes, abandoned? or just not wanted any more. One in particular, a true fixer upper, with windows bricked up from the inside caught my eye. A story there Iím sure. We saw teenagers out of school or on their way home for lunch. We saw beautiful fruits for sale as well as regular home goods. We also saw a white phone box. We were also beginning to realize that if we went to Old Sintra, we would not make the coast at all this day. Shrimp! We kept this 'couvert' & while I would have loved to have had some of the cheese, I knew I would be too full. You pay for each item you choose to eat. I had the fish pate while Dick had a bowl of vegetable soup. Entrees were his curried shrimp and my shrimp bread pudding. I wish I had taken a shot of the dish as it arrived with the raw egg yolk in the center. I think I would have freaked our waitress out if I had photographed her mixing the egg into the dish. (Shades of rice in Iran.) It was creamy, rich and delicious. From our table we could see life go on & note the conical towers of the cathedral. Ah that must be old town. While we didn't have dessert there was the requisite galao. Back to walk lunch off. Up we went but I had no intention of walking DOWN that steep hill. So we looked around to see what was up here - a miradouro, just like Spain and what a view! We could see across the city to the Castle of Saint George but also, those pesky clouds. Walking through the Barrio Alto, we were getting hungry but it was too early and places weren't open. Bookstores were but the sky got a lot darker. This was a constant of our week in Portugal, cloud, rain, sun all taking turns and changing continuously. It was interesting weather and not really bad as a whole. While we wouldn't be hearing any fado at night any more than we were able to hear flamenco in Spain as we were asleep long before the shows started, we did spot this...Fado on Demand. It eventually lightened up & we decided to head downtown by getting a one day transit pass.(3.50euro each) We both love the idea of being able to hop on any & all buses, trams & metros. It gave us some sense of control (not that control is important to either of us!!!) but also allowed the openendedness I like in traveling. Be in the moment, go with the flow & get on the nearest tram. We started our walk down the hill, not quite sure where our path but knowing we had done this in other countries & managed. We passed old buildings, bits of untold stories. Places that were disappearing as we walked. Realities becoming memories. We were headed for the Laranjieras Metro stop & when I saw the Sete Rios sign, I knew we were ok. Now just to find the magic M on a building or signpost. We made it & then stood bewildered at the ticket machine. My bits of understanding Portuguese were no use. Fortunately, a young woman spotted our blank faces and came over & helped us buy the one way ticket we needed to get started. We were never sure whether we could get the one day pass at this station but it didn't matter. We were on our way! We hit the ground running, or at least walking as quickly as we could on the stone cobbles. & Eureka! we saw the 28 Tram which gives a great sightseeing jaunt through Lisbon. Once we saw the tram we continued walking, trying to find the Opera House, but get slightly distracted by the Santa ladies. Diligently reading our maps, we found the street despite drizzle. As the ticket office was closed, lunch was not being served on the lovely courtyard, so we mushed on. Is it too early for lunch? have a coffee instead? We spotted a promising cafe in the Museum ...but alas it was closed due to renovations. Down a hill we trudged not really sure of where we were but optimistic, hopeful. Aha! we spotted the tram again...and decide this was a place to look for lunch & hope for clearing skies or at least not a downpour.
