That weather photo is at 10pm! that was freaky weather. For whatever reason, I didn’t document a lot this week. Dick was just back from his week in Myrtle Beach SC and it was a lot of catch up. He did have good bicycle weather as opposed to the temps we had. I turned the heat off on Saturday and it went down to 47 in the house! When Dick gets back, the heat always is on early in the a.m. Now I wonder if it will ever be warm enough for the orchid Crista gave me or warm enough to make the kombucha? I spent a lot of time cleaning out the Macbook getting it ready to give to Nong. / Monday was the first JSJ session with Janie since...winter? / Tuesday Dick to his car to Silverstar for a checkup. It wasn’t the usual 1k. :) I put a full load of laundry on the line, first time this spring! I finally found the rest of the Rhine cruise menus etc. Cleaning out has its own rewards sometimes! / Got my 3k steps in at the Mall but boy that floor is really hard on the heel. The cupcake lady enjoyed her cupcake. / Thursday Dick had bloodwork and went to lunch with Brad so I got an Indian carryout. The computer is running slow. I wonder how many days it’s been since I shut it down. :( / It looked like a real Good Friday day with overcast skies, wind and maybe a thunderstorm. That’s what I remember from my childhood. I moved the studio around getting ready for the air conditioner. I still really dislike seeing the wires at the back of the desk but until more stuff gets taken out, I don’t have too many options. I really have no place for those 12” binders. / Saturday Big dark clouds when we went out this am but in an hour the sun was shining. Wind not as bad as they said it could be. Of course this is one of the benefits or drawbacks of no longer having to go into an office. Evenings I can handle a bit better except when I realize that it’s time for dinner and my body tells me I have an hour or two more. Fortunately, we usually have some leftovers for ‘himself’ and even better is that he is glad to have them. Me? I’m not hungry until about 7:30 or 8pm so I have to force my body clock to adjust. We had been married just outside of Boulder in 2001 and the idea of winter in Colorado had seemed wonderful. Wonderful until we had two winters of bitter cold and snow in Maryland. I decided I would stay home and deal with whatever we got here and get to my Doctor’s appointments on time. Dick was not overjoyed to go out there and drive in more serious snow, in fact the snow was so heavy the night he arrived, he stayed in Denver and drove west the next day. The conference went well and he said that Boulder knows how to clear roads AND bike paths immediately. By the time he took this one photo, he also acknowledged that it really was beautiful. I was sorry not to see such beauty again but I had our own snow to shovel every day while he was gone. Not so pretty and definitely not so enjoyable. This is a very blurry shot but it brings back wonderful memories of my in laws visiting us in England. They came to babysit us while my xh and I went on a camping trip on the Continent. That is a whole other story and one which doesn't have any photos that I can find. But back to this image. My eldest son is sitting on his paternal grandfather's arm. It is late afternoon as the sun is coming in from the west. In his leopard pajamas, made by his maternal great grandmother, my son is holding what appears to be a stuffed animal. As it is not blue, is is not his beloved Teddy. What strikes me in this image is how so many beloved items stick in our memory, only to reappear in later years without conscious thought. I, too, now have a pair of leopard flannel jammies! The walls in our bedroom are painted the same dark green. I still have some of that Ethan Allen furniture in our living room. But what I really have is the memory of two people I love/d, together for a short time. So for Valentine's Day we made reservations for lunch. As I had been in NoVA dog sitting, it was just a drive cross Chain Bridge and down to Black Salt. A bit of confusion when I didn't have a parking app to park on the street but the bad news came inside when they had a very abbreviated menu. That way I know I'll have a couple dozen stories told this year. It's a start! This lad, my former husband, here relaxing just before a wedding down in San Angelo Texas, just had a birthday this week. Birthday boy is now 72. Time does pass, doesn't it. Funnily enough, I now have yellow chairs just like those in the photo. I bought mine on Craigs List a couple of years ago because they really appealed to me. Now I see why. Yellow metal chairs mean a happy time and I didn't even realize it til today! How memories are made... There were many many more elements in the StudioDD template but I wanted it a bit less busy for this older photo. I also recolored the beads to go with his gray suit. It's also been a while since I made the layout right after doing a blog post! Last Friday, dh had a coupon for a pre-Valentine's Day treat at Starbucks. Coffee and a pastry for $5. Not necessarily the greatest bargain but a nice idea. So off we went when the clock struck 2pm. (That must be a slow time at Starbucks...) I was enticed by the one special...a Flat White with a chocolate croissant (warmed!). He decided to get the other special ...a Raspberry Chocolate Latte with a shortbread cookie. Mine was just right but as I suspected his choice was way too sweet for him. This is a man who drinks Sumatran, black no sugar. (ugh...) But we enjoyed our treats, perused the new mugs and tumblers, and the types of coffee pods that fit the old Keurig passed on to us by our grandson. Nothing we needed but I would like one of those stainless straws! While we were there I saw two couples come in but no one else sat at our table or played with the props. Maybe you have to be young enough or old enough to have fun being silly. Put me in the latter category! Just think...this wasn't even Valentine's Day. It was Friday the 13th, and a good one it was. Perfect! That freebie was also used as a mask for the photo. Our landlady was Mrs. Ellsworth, and a true gem she was. She took in mostly long term boarders like us. I can only recall one other tenant, a young man our age, David, whose parents were working were out in Bahrain. Little did I know that I would also end up in Bahrain one day. My husband was working rotating shift work so there were days that I had to stay out of the room while he slept. My son and I wandered through the town of Harrogate, but mainly enjoyed our time in the Valley Gardens. As I recall it was a fairly sunny summer, or maybe I had already learned as we were taught..If the sun was out, take advantage of it. Mrs. Ellsworth was wonderful to us and oh did she feed us. The English Breakfast was in all its glory then with eggs, bacon, sausage, fried tomatoes and mushrooms, fried bread and a good pot of tea. While it sounds a lot, the weather wasn't terribly warm to us and with all that walking, at my young age I burned those calories off. As regular tenants, we also had dinner with Mrs. E. I don't recall those meals in detail but I know they were good. Real, fresh food was a given in our years in England. Simple and hearty and delicious. British food had no bad reputation for us! After our meal, we usually sat around and talked, and once in a while Mrs. E. would ask my husband to 'bath the dog.' Old Blackie would reluctantly be led out to that driveway next to the house and get hose downed, soaped up, and rinsed. He smelled much sweeter and endured these episodes with a British upper lip. I wish I had a picture of it all. It wasn't an easy few months but even then we knew it was a good time. A page with a bit of catch up will have to work here. btw, I LOVE the long journalers! Once we got to the town of Chieri on the other side of the hill - or what is a small mountain in my mind - we could have spent some time just having an espresso or walking a bit in the town but seeing as how long our trip UP had taken, we decided the better idea would be to just make sure we could get back to Turin in the daytime. We dreaded the possibility of the same kind of ride. Getting back on the bus into Turin we were sooo relieved that our current driver was not the lunatic that we had had on our first ride. The ride up to the summit was again a straight road and we changed buses up at the top with a brief bit of time to enjoy the vistas. Sadly, we just looked and didn’t take more photos. Going down the western switchbacks was pretty pleasant when one wasn’t falling off the seat or lurching forward. By this point we could laugh at our experience earlier on, one I’d not like to repeat. Having an espresso on solid ground, at ‘home’ in Turin, seemed like a wise idea. It didn’t seem far and had been in many of the guide books. This seemed like it would be a short trip. The seats on the bus were wooden and there was a lot of standing space.I got a seat facing forward but Dick was facing backward. That would be the least of his problems. Our driver turned out to be hell bent on getting up the many switchback turns as quickly as possible. The flock of teenage students had quite a time standing and nearly falling on the floor every time the driver jammed his breaks on. Dick kept sliding off his seat and neither of us saw the memorial we had hoped to visit. Stops just happened and there was no way of telling when one might come up, plus I realized we were not only going farther than we had planned but all the stops were outside gated homes. The only thing to do was stay on til the bus came to the end of its journey. Round and round we rode for more than an hour til we came down from out hill on the other side. It was a beautiful but death defying ride. Now to get back to Turin alive!

3 comments Mon, 19 Jan 2015 19:30:55 +0000 14 March 28A

by: maureenreynolds

Description}: Our last day in Turin involved getting a lot of packing done & clearing out. It was a sunny day so once again I had a chance to look out our windows to see the apartments across the street. In the evenings, I had loved watching the young couple across the way prepare dinner. I wished I could have invited myself over! Signor looked like a very good cook. After Dick moved the car from the free nightly street parking to the garage at Porta Susa, we decided to finally take the ‘sightseeing’ Star tram. After waiting & waiting we finally read the notice that let us know that this tram only ran only on weekends. Oh well... We took another tram to downtown & by then needed an espresso. Well I did. Then we visited the Cathedral & said the requisite prayer in front of the replica of the Shroud of Turin. Once again, not agreeing on where to eat, we finally settled for a very modern cafe that specialized in ‘healthy food.’ Not the best choice but we were both ready to sit down. It’s a good thing we did get some refreshment because there was an adventure ahead that we did not expect. I decided that I wanted to see the other side of the Po river which turned out to be full of lovely shops but way too hilly for my knee. So we ventured on a tram that appeared to be going UP the hill. I hoped to get this album done before 2015 and it may happen...;) I woke up VERY early on March 24th with an incredible noise out the front window. After trying to ignore it for a while I finally had a look . Apparently, the noisy neighbors above were moving out and with the old building, most of their stuff was coming down a ladder onto the removal van. It was a brilliant clear day and so we decided this would be the day to head south, down to the Mediterranean. We walked to the garage holding our car and headed west , with the Alps just breathtaking. Eventually we headed south and drove and drove. We soon realized that with our usual late departure, we could not do any sightseeing on the way down. Ah well, another day, another trip. Suddenly it seemed we were getting close as the air and temperature changed. Then there was that magic moment when all at once the sea was visible. Now all we had to do was get to a coastal road and decide where we would go. Genoa to our west and Monaco to our east.
