Dirty Hands Day - Story Challenge

Description}: A relatively quiet Thursday. There were a few places I was scheduled to go today but my 1pm meeting was cancelled. Yea! A lot got done on the computer in the morning because I knew that I wouldn't have to stop mid day and leave the house. That's a nice feeling when I feel I want to get some things done without a deadline over me. I am not one of those people who likes deadlines though when I was working, I could certainly work with them. But I mean I would start a project as soon as I got it and not wait til the 11th hour. I could prioritize what needed more attention and not just work on something because I just got the assignment. I do not like the adrenaline rush of waiting til the last minute on things. At all! My heart thanks me for that aversion. So lunch was over, the sun was shining, and it wasn't hot. A perfect time to get out in the yard and pot up/plant a batch of the annuals I bought last weekend. We've had so much wind lately that I worried they'd dry out...before I got in the mood. My interest in gardening has waned as I've aged so this wasn't a project I was jonesing to do. However, we've had a goodly amount of rain since I bought those plants and they were in perfect shape to plant But that meeting I was going to that got cancelled? Well, it was quite near a K-Mart and I'd planned to buy a couple pairs of cheap gardening gloves. Gloves just good enough to keep my nails fairly clean. I used to always drag my nails over a bar of soap before gardening but bars of soap are rare in our house. (I need to keep one of those mini hotel soap bars downstairs for just this kind of occasion.) So out I went, without gloves as my true gardening gloves are too thick for transplanting those petunias with their flimsy roots. Two scrubs later, my nails are getting back to normal and my hands are getting quite dried out. That 2nd meeting? Fortunately, not so important so I'm taking a bye tonight. Gardeners need more than Happy Hour food and truthfully, I really don't ever need Happy Hour food, nor do I often like Happy Hour food. Tonight will be healthy and I'll be happy. Just a couple more nail scrubs and I'll be clean again. Description}: Exercise continues. While some of the classes work me to my maximum it�s always worth it. Monday is ok. Our one teacher has tried to learn how to teach aerobics but she�s having a hard time. She needs to learns to teach seniors. The chair Tai Chi later on Monday is a welcome respite. Wednesday is the killer day with our Latin dynamo and then regular Tai Chi. My body is changing though - for the good! Description}: When Dick suggested a new Mexican restaurant, I thought it was one we had been to, several years ago. When we googled the address and got closer, I suspected it might be in a place that was familiar to me. Familiar from a very long time ago. The tiny little cluster of shops was down the hill from my friend Cathy�s house. In senior year, we used to set on the shop curb and wait for our bus. When it came by, we continued to sit and laugh and laugh, saying �Oh well, there goes the bus!� We were close to graduation, admitted to our colleges of choice, and knew we were able to get away with murder. Description}: Always a poignant moment when I use one of Pattie's elements. :( April 14-20 2013 I started the week with a Baltimore JFX market trip . Bloody hell, They now want $2 an hour to park. I ignored the meters. I suspected we would get a couple of these double yolk eggs! Also a plant stop at Walmart & finally got the mini blinds. Exercise going well. I really feel it & feel better. A trip to Delmar to see Nong,. Had a nice stop at the Choptank & old bridge, now a fishing bridge. Thank God things are ok with Nong. Lotus is still as smart as ever. Her iPad was taken away for a few days for �attitude�. She loved her fairy and fairy book & sat reading it right away. A good visit but a long day�s drive to & fro. Dinner at Panera Salisbury. The traveling chefs made us a great lunch at Sr. Center. Loved the arugula salad. Description}: Upon arrival in Nervi, we walked to the center of town and found where the return bus would be departing. Then it was time for an espresso before we set off on the cliff walk. It is the most beautiful sea walk in Italy, or so it claims. It is 1 mile long and is named Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi, the popular wife of Guiseppe Garibaldi. We had the perfect weather for this walk and it was a highlight of the trip for me. Description}: Week 14 seems to have involved a lot of eating. Dick was out a lot of the week and I had a lot of doctor and dentist appointments. Blood work was great and the dental cleaning was followed up by an interview by the grant people with Lisa at Panera. Hope we get the money. As we had no Easter dinner, Dick had a brunch with Maria. He said I didn�t miss much. The same could be said for the new pizza. Never again for me. I finally had my oysters at Mike�s on a chilly night but sadly the fish was so-so. The winner of the week were the ice cream sundaes at Brusters. OMG. I sill had the lovely morning light and shadows most days as well as the scent of the hyacinths. Jake�s gift of the USC mug was used a lot for hot tea. Description}: After our lunch - & rest! - we decided to finally walk east from our apartment in the late afternoon. Genoa is certainly built on many many hills but it�s only in the walking in a straight line that one can appreciate it. Walking across the elevated road/bridge near our place, we came directly to the church of Santa Maria Assunta. We believed there was a supermarket near the church but never found it. The neighborhood was lovely with many old buildings. We headed north just to see what we would find, & came to the end of the plateau we had been on. Stunning views to the hills outside of old Genoa. We were really up high & my knees made the decision to pay for the little elevator down to Piazza Dante rather than take more steps. Description}: Bit by bit, I hope to get this trip to Italy finished in a week. Somehow, the last page or two or so always gets left undone. :( May 21 started out as an overcast rainy day. I decided to finally get myself to the Mercato Orientale, the Eastern Market even tho I had very little cooking time left in Genoa. We still had a few restaurants to try but I wanted to check what was available this time of year and the prices. Nice greens coming in, and always the Italian products were noted. Lots of stands selling pesto . I got a container even tho I�ve never been overly fond of pesto. I did get some of the trofie to serve with the pesto. Most of the fish was not Italian with lots from the coast of Africa. I also got a packet of porchini though Iain had given us a lifetime�s worth in Seattle. One interesting thing I noticed is that eggs are sold in units of 10 through most of Europe. Again, I had a few eggs left for his breakfasts. It was hard not to buy more than I needed or could cook but that�s a standard issue in going to a market for me. I did go upstairs in the market to look for buttons for Janie. No luck. However I bought a mezzaluna for myself in the tiny kitchen wares shop. Finally home, past Christopher Columbus� house. We never did go in for the tour. and I�m fine with that! Description}: I had great intentions of getting the Easter stuff up before I went to VA. It didn�t happen. I did have the lovely tulips on the table. White! Some good food, spaghetti & meatballs, then steamed salmon. Over in VA, I didn�t do much. Reading, watching movies including �Argo� & the Jo Nesbo story, The Headhunters on Netflix. Their trip down to South Carolina resulted in a college decision - USC in Columbia. Everyone�s happy. Ranger was good, tho I had to keep him out of my bedroom because of snoring and other noise making! The day of the mulch delivery was fun to watch. 75 bags of mulch! Description}: Boy this was an exhausting week. I'm surprised, looking back, that we actually ate as much as we did! A hectic week with a trip to VA & a Persian meal. He was not impressed by gormeh sabzi. Lots of preparation for the Literacy workshop. Office Depot for copies, & time spent on making binders. Thank God for the island. Corned beef later in the week, yielding many meals of leftovers for him. New knee doctor & cortisone shot. Relief. Book talk in Howard County. Finally a jammed saturday with celebration & Literacy training. I was worn out by Saturday night. Description}: Just back from Boston with a bit of catchup on laundry and photo sorting. I didn�t do any of that in Boston because I wanted to be out. It was back to exercise class on Wednesday as the MLK holiday gave me a day off! I was really beat that first day but did see this old cookbook which the desk clerk gave me for free. I love these old ones.I I also had a bunch of updates to do with the Literacy work as more students are applying for literacy training. I hope the assessors step up to the plate and do what they were trained to do. We also had a very nice luncheon at the Severn Inn, courtesy of Erin Gay. The food was very good but while we had great views of the Severn and the Naval Academy, the glare was quite strong in the winter light. Janie left for CA for three weeks so I was glad to get a JinShinJyutsu session in with her. I took my old books back to the library and got the new Ian McEwan one. I love his books and hesitate to start it because he only writes one every three years or so. Choices! Description}: January 27-February 1 A week of temperature contrasts, with my space heater on at times, and yet warm enough to wear flip flips for a pedicure and then snow! Description}: Sunday - The swearing in of President Obama. Both daughters acted like daughters which was nice to see. I had forgotten the time so I missed seeing it on tv. Old age no doubt. - Monday, we had no exercise class though Dick forgot and was up and dressed to go. Ha, ha. I had a JSJ session with Janie and a good long talk about this and that. I�ve missed that. -Tuesday, I made more Parmesan shortbread for our afternoon espressos. - Wednesday, Lightroom class and I actually learned a bit. Then it snowed! - Thursday, I cleaned out that paperclip mess. It�s bugged me for months. - Friday, exercise and lots of fruit. Description}: Recycling an older layout from 2011. This year is still not writ in stone as to style. Aerobic class began, Dick Monday and me M,W, and F. He got a good report from the cardiologist 1 yr later and was happy to go on his biking trip in Florida. The weather warmed up round here too, ugh. Description}: January 1-5, 2013 So much of this week was spent doing the post Christmas chores. Putting the decorations away, getting things ready for the accountant, switching out the few bits of china I used this year. Dick went to WVA to see Dave again, and took Mike McC with him. Once again, modern medicine has the dubious benefit of prolonging life even though the quality of life deteriorates. It�s definitely a personal decision but it makes the two of us all the clearer on what we don�t want. A time to reflect on such things is good. December 22-31 Dogsitting in VA - I got my glasses repaired at a sad old Landmark Mall - Enjoyed the tree at their house, & the clever watering device - Clementines chilling outside & getting a real bath with a downpour 1 night -Acceptance letter & scholarhip for Jake from Providence College -Dick came over on Christmas Day for lunch at Legal Seafood at Tysons - I had my oysters; he had fish n�chips; we shared a Boston Cream Pie - We worked on old iMac & it works just fine - Michael took to his new bike like he was born to it - Wonder if little Mr. LongLegs could use a larger size - Jake returned from trip very sick, finally diagnosed as mono - Ice beads on clothes line & slight snow on Saturday. Description}: Can you believe it? Doesn't it seem like we just started this project...a few months ago? wow. I'm glad to have a chance to 'red it up'! Some cooking at home before I left for the week in VA and laundry catch up with tea towels on the upstairs rail. It was also the time to hand over the old button tin to one of my dearest friends. A foggy morning on my way over to her house which felt just right. I merged two iPhoto libraries and am not sure about whether I�m happy about it. Godwilling, Lightroom will be a help here. I left Dick with the Peppermint Bark I made as well as a bag of Peppermint M&Ms under his pillow as a surprise. In VA, there was a lot to pack for an early am departure for Chicago, hoping to avoid the snow. Finally, Ranger and I had time to spend together, tho I know I�m just 2nd best.
