Those with names and other clues give me hope that someday their families may see their ancestors. Lois Mary Allen is written on the back, along with her age of 2, and her birth year of 1893. I pushed myself to learn more techniques, and to create better pages. I learned more about blend modes, creating custom shadows, creating text paths, and many other techniques with the hopes of creating a more striking page. I took a number of classes, in things like blending, page composition, creating custom shadows, among others. I joined Scott Kelby Training to better both my photography and photoshop skills, plus, I joined two Creative Teams, in hopes that they too would push my skills. In addition to these classes and CT roles, the biggest changes occurred with my venturing out to investigate the many scrapping sites, and galleries. Trying to emulate what I see pushes me as well. I also began blogging about my journey. Now, as for 2012 – more of the same, but with more emphasis on my photography skills, and creating pages that are even more outside of my comfort zone – for as we all know, in digital, anything is possible, we just have to know how to create it. 2012 looks to be quite promising. I relax and tat while watching a Christmas movie, or do some scrapping, and Ron, recovering from a broken arm will not ride today, but we will be certain to spend time with Dusty as well & make certain he gets a Christmas treat too. No stress - no pressure - no time constraints. In the evening, we have a nice, and simple dinner of our favorites, including a pie. Not owning a trailer, Billy drove him down from Jullian. We are Dusty’s third owner, having originally come from a ranch in Colorado. It was hard to contain my excitement as Billy handed the lead rope to Ron, & he led him from the trailer. It is hard for me to think about what is going through Dusty’s mind, in this new & different place. His demeanor is such that nothing much seems to bother him, but our main priority is to make him feel like he has arrived home, & hope that he feels safe and secure in this new home. The three of us are hoping to - as horse owners put it - ‘give him a job’, (use him to his potential). He still needs lots of training, but Patti is here to help us finish him up. I have yet to be there when they lay eggs, but have been told I can pull them out to be put in the incubator, otherwise they are unlikely to survive hatching in the pen, as the adults end up accidently crushing them. He was not one to ever show his emotions, he seldom even spoke. Now I look at these photo taken of him years before I was born, and wonder about his life. I have no idea where they were taken, but I am sure that in his mind he had nothing but wonderful thought of his future, his life, his family & friends. I see his smile in the photo and it reminds me about how special his smile was. He was such a hard working man, always providing for his parents and brothers and sisters. He didn’t marry until in his 40’s, with my mom 22 years younger, he soon had 4 daughters. I went everywhere with him until I was 5. I remember sitting with him listening to music, as he would sing along to Tony Bennett, & Ray Charles, and he would whistle such a beautiful whistle. I don’t ever remember having a conversation with him, he never spoke to his kids. When he became ill, my mom shielded us from his illness, and when he died, we were protected by staying with relatives, as if we didn’t know what was going on. I was only 12, but I still regret that I never sat down with him to tell him how much I loved him, but I have no doubt he knew, just as without ever saying a word, I knew he loved me. I regret not pushing my mom to be at the funeral so I could say my good-byes. I learned a great lesson from this silence, that one should never be silent. Now grown, my daughter and I have wonderful conversations about everything, and I don’t hesitate to tell her how much she is loved, as back then, I vowed not to have future regrets of conversations not had, and words not spoken. It was a lesson a 12 year old was never taught, but learned the hard way, with many regrets of how things should have been done! Here is another try - this time trying to blend some background colors that I wished really weren't there. In the end, to be honest, I like both pages, but they were both done slightly differently. I am trying really hard to learn each technique exactly as Jana is showing each of them, and then in the end, I will have the tools to decide how to put my page together. Such wonderful new tools Jana - thank-you. I made this for a friend at work. I had to try to get both green and yellow into it as her room is green and yellow. Journaling reads: Duster is seldom bothered by anything. Whereas most horses sniff things to decide if they are okay, Duster seems to sniff everything, just because he likes to. We cannot walk by him without him reaching out to sniff. He will sniff for a good long time too, at least until we decide he has sniffed enough and we walk past. I told Rachel that was the one thing about Duster she would have to get use to. Now, when she rides she thinks it is so funny that she must always stop to let him sniff, and sniff, and sniff. It can be so frustrating. I find that I have to be happy with the one photo here or there that has a somewhat forced smile, or the stolen photo taken from afar. Journaling reads: I know I always have my camera with me, and that I can easily take hundreds of photos per month, but all I wish to do is document our lives. I pull the camera out and you frown, make faces - and unless I catch you off-guard, you are never captured with a smile on your face. On the occasion I do catch you with a smile, and you tell me how much you like the scrapbook page I create with it, you still do your best to prevent me from taking natural photos of you as if I am not there. So I continue to try to capture the unknown photo from afar, or the quick shot you didn’t expect, and hope someday soon you realize that it is much easier to go through life without taking into account the extraneous activities, and focus instead on enjoying and living your life without the inner constraint that stops you when you think someone might be looking. Cal. may not have heard about the blackout of Sept. 8. One worker in N. Gila, AZ did something wrong and caused all of San Diego County, and some of Imperial & Orange County, and Mexico to lose power just prior to rush hour. This page is the result of drivers rushing, and not seeing the non-working lights as a stop sign. Journaling reads: The power went out at 3:38pm. The power was out in all of San Diego County as well as parts of Mexico, Imperial and Orange Counties. What was going on! I Knew I had a full tank, so I could afford to sit in the car and wait, and it was getting very hot in the office with no open windows and no air conditioning. Ninety minutes and 1.5 miles later a traffic cop was getting the traffic moving to almost full speed. Stopping at the non-working traffic lights, was not something I guess I should have done, as it seems no one else wanted to do so. I didn’t even see it coming, but the impact was something I had experienced before. It caused the six 12 packs of pepsi that I had in the back to explode, and I could hear it hissing. I sat stunned for about 10 minutes. I was shaking. I knew what to expect, as I had been rear-ended before. I didn’t look forward to the pain that would surely start in the morning. I was lucky to have been able to call out to AAA, but it took 90 minutes for the tow truck to arrive. As we drove to the lot, we could see cars abandoned along the road, having run out of gas. Cars were lined up at dark gas stations, as they had too little fuel to make it home. After my initial call to AAA and Ron, cell phone service was non-existant, so I had to rely on texting. Dropped off by the tow truck driver at a gas station I waited in the dark to be picked up. People were walking around like zombies waiting to get gas. It was so eerie. At 9:30pm, Ron finally found me, and I was happy to be handed a warm soda to drink on the drive home. Human error by one utility worker in North Gila, Arizona was the cause for more than 5 million to lose power. It was no surprise when told by the insurance adjustor that my poor beloved Matrix was a total loss. Although I loved my little Matrix, I will not buy another as 2 Matrixes being rear-ended and totaled is enough for me. I think I will be dealing with head and neck pain for some time to come, but at least now I can feel my fingers and toes again. So now I take a deep breath and try not to think about the loss, and how much money I will have to add to the insurance money to buy another car. I set my sights on the future test drives. Rachel thinks it fun, and can’t wait to come along to sit in all the new cars. I’M thinking maybe this time a red car. This one is about her birth. Journaling reads: Prior to your birth I decided that I didn’t want your dad to stop doing what he loved doing, and I knew every May he would attend a ski race camp at Mammoth Mountain, so I told him that as long as I had a short while to bounce back from your delivery, I didn’t see why he shouldn’t go. It would be early May, and you would be about 3 weeks by then. I knew your dad did not cook, so I decided I would fill the freezer with frozen dinners so that all he would have to do was pop one in the oven or microwave and be done. In the early evening, I went to the grocery store and filled my cart with meals. As I stood in the line, I began to have contractions. It was about 7:00pm on April 11th. I didn’t for a second think that it was false labor, as I was already 6 days late. I starting wondering how long it would be before you were born, but I knew, standing in line, that I didn’t have to get stressed about being at the supermarket, as long as my water didn’t break (how horrible that would be). When I got home, I told your dad that you were on your way, and told him he might want to get some sleep, as I thought it would be a while before we would have to head to the hospital. The contractions were not that bad, so I tried to relax as much as I could. Hoping a hot shower would speed things along, I spent a lot of time in the shower that night, but basically I was up the entire night until I didn’t think I could handle the pain any longer. I woke up your dad at about 4:00am, and at about 5:00am we called Dr. Wise. He told me to hold off as long as I could prior to heading to the hospital. At about 6:00am, I didn’t think I could stand it any longer, and we headed to the hospital. The car ride was horrible, as when I had a contraction, and the pain would peak, it would stay at the peaked level of pain as long as the car was moving, so I kept asking Ron to stop the car. We had about a 30 minute ride to the hospital, so it made for a horrible ride. Once we got to the hospital, they examined me, and told me I was not dilated at all. They suggested we go back home, which I wasn’t about to do. They then suggested we go to the Denny’s down the street. Reluctantly, we did so, although it was hard to handle the drive. I was too nauseous to eat, but ordered a bit of this and that because I knew I would not be given any food at the hospital until after your birth. I basically sat in the booth in pain and in tears, not really caring that people might be watching. I eventually told your dad we should go back. Within 30 seconds of being back at the hospital, I threw up everything I had eaten. They again examined me, and told me that I was still not dilated, and insisted we go home. I asked that they call the Doctor before we decided what to do. When the nurse went off to call Dr. Wise, my water broke. The nurse told us that because my water had broken, I would be admitted. She checked me again, and said that when she touched the cervix, I went from not being dilated to 5 centimeters. Dr. Wise was on his way. I was happy to hear I did not have to wait for Doctor Wise to arrive before they would administer an epidural. I was in too much pain to wait, and I had earlier in my pregnancy decided I was not one to go natural. I just didn’t want to take any pain drugs that might remain in your system after birth. After I got the epidural, it was smooth sailing, as I felt no pain at all. I sat back to try to relax, which was hard, but only because I was so excited that you would soon arrive. Dr. Wise arrived around noon, and the 3 of us sat in the room and chatted about the Padres, among other things. We also had the TV to watch, and I had bought your dad’s radio along with my favorite Jackson Browne albums to help relax me, but because of the epidural, I was feeling no pain at all. My due date was April 8th. It was now the 12th, and I starting thinking - could it be possible that I could deliver you on my mom’s birthday. She had had me three days after her birthday. I asked Dr. Wise, and he said that there was no way you would be born on the 13th. Hours came and went, and still, things were not progressing. Dr. Wise then asked if it would be okay to back off on some of the epidural. I had never thought the epidural would take away all of the pain, but just enough to make it bearable. Even after we changed the epidural dosage, things were not progressing as he would like. It was getting to be late evening, and come 10pm, Dr. Wise told me he wanted to give me some Pitocin to push the labor along. I knew that he would only ask to do so if he felt it was necessary, so I agreed. The labor began to progress, and you were born. You did in fact wait to be born on April 13th, on your grandmother’s birthday. It was 12:47am when you came into this world. You were 8 days late, and because of this, Dr. Wise had anticipated the possibility of you aspirating meconium. As you were being born, I was informed that you indeed had done so, therefore they had to whisk you away to be certain to clear your airway. For this reason, Daddy did not get to cut the umbilical cord, and I was not able to hold you right away. We felt it was important for them to do what they needed to do as long as that meant you were okay. I did ask if it was possible that when it came time to bath you for the first time that they do so in the room. I had purposely chosen Alvarado Hospital because they had the special birthing rooms, and would not move the infants to the nursery. The nurse told me she would do so. I don’t know if I was afraid of you being stolen or switched. I just didn’t want you to leave my sight. I did notice two things about you when you were born. The first was that you had loads of hair. I remember how shocked I was when Doctor Wise stated that you had dark curly hair as you were crowning, and I remember thinking that I did not expect you to have any hair, as I was bald when I was born. The other thing I noticed was that you had a little spot on your belly – below your belly button. I told myself, even if you had to be taken to the nursery, I could always tell it was you because of that special spot. That was YOUR spot. You were suctioned out, and checked out, washed up and wrapped in a blanket and handed to me. Your dad and I gazed at you for a long time, passing you back and forth so we could both hold you. It was now getting to be early morning, and I knew I wouldn’t get any sleep with all the typical hospital noise, so I mentioned to your dad that he should head home so at least he would get some sleep. He did, and I remember having your bassinet right next to my bed, but I just held you for hours. You were completely quiet. We gazed at each other, and you held my fingers so tight. I was not tired at all, although with the sun coming up, I knew I had been up for about 48 hours and went to about 30 hours of labor. I knew there was no way I would be able to sleep with this wonderful little being in my arms. I couldn’t even put you in your bassinet. I held you and whispered to you about how wonderful your life would be and how happy we were that you had arrived. I just kept gazing at this perfect little infant, our Rachel Whitney. As each wave crashed, and splashed, I would watch her hands go higher in the air, almost like she was willing it to go higher. It felt so good by the shore with the sun beating down on us, and the cool ocean breeze. Feeling the spray of the ocean was just so exhilarating. The smell of the salt air revitalized my soul. Wish I had digital way back then:( (she is 19 now) I am filling these pages with text since I don't have many photo - in hopes to give her some insite of who she was. [IMG][/IMG] Journaling: You are 26 months old, and just beginning to realize you are the center of the world. You are such a good child, but you know that everyone pays close attention to everything you do. You pick this up when we are out, and people stop me to tell me how beautiful you are. From the day you were born, we were often stopped and asked if I put you on TV. I’d just smile and thank them and tell them no. Here in the back yard, I can see the sly look on your face that you know you are noticed, and you drink this up, and seem to thrive on it. You are running around the yard knowing that I am taking photographs of you, and you are either being your coy sweet self, or hamming it up for the camera. You have a kind of swagger when you walk. It’s kind of a “notice me” walk - a walk of importance, and I watch you in amazement and with the realization that you truly are a special child. Although you are not really the center of the world, you really are the center of my world, and I feel so blessed with that knowledge. Just over 2 years of age, you are sweet, even tempered, confident and self assured. You will often get up in the middle of the night and walk through the house in complete darkness - not at all afraid - nothing phases you. You are open to every new situation, you don’t have to have me next to you to cling onto. You are also at the stage of giving me a new smile when I ask you to smile for the camera. No matter how much I try to get you to smile naturally, you will not let it happen. You now insist on smiling by tightly squinting your eyes closed. No matter how much I ask you to smile naturally, you insiston squinting you eyes saying “mommy this is my smile!”, so I am forced to try to catch you while you are not thinking about me and the camera. Although you do have other children to play with at Debra’s daycare while I am at work, you are content to play by yourself as well. You are an only child and we have no pets, so you have learned to play contently on your own. That is not to say you do not have your moments, because I think every child does. We have noticed that you need some time by yourself once I bring you have from Debra’s. You will often cry for a few minutes, but it is not a cry like you are angry to be leaving Debra’s, it is more like a release - going from lots of activity to be in a quiet home, After two minutes in your room you seem to re-center yourself and you are ready to come out and be your happy little self. Believe it or not, the only other difficult time I have with you is when a movie you are watching is over, you immediately start crying and saving OVER-OVER-OVER, and more often than not, we’d play the same movie again. I do remember one weekend when Debra let you borrow BALTO for the weekend. I believe we watched that movie more than a dozen times before Monday. You weren’t necessarily watching it, but you liked it on while you were playing with other things. When you were done with a movie, you would then say “REWAA”, which meant ANOTHER ONE, and we would pick out another movie to watch. But I must say that for the most part, you are a delight to be around, so much so that Debra asks to take you places on the week-end, because everything to you is such a delight that it makes the people around you feel good. Greatly missed. Journaling reads: Cookie was the first dog I remember having. We took her in when her owner could no longer keep her. She was tossed into a family with 4 girls, all of whom were very affectionate with her to the point of hugging and smothering her to death. She handled it all, without ever snapping or growling. Prior to our moving to the country, I attended Edgar C Stiles school (a K through 12 school), which was about 1/2 mile from home. Often times when we walked to school, Cookie would escort us. My mom had a West Haven street cop look out for us on our walk. He was always very nice to us, and would say hi to Cookie as well. To think back on it now, the streets were pretty busy, and it amazes me that Cookie never got run over. Come 3:00, when school let out, I would sometimes find her sitting on the massive front steps, waiting for me. Days that I had to stay late, the bus driver would also allow Cookie on the bus, and she would sit beside me. I think back to those days, and cannot believe that we thought nothing of this, never fearing that she would be hit by a car, or would get lost, or bite another child or that I would get in trouble for having my dog be on school grounds all day. Things were different then. I still tear up when I think of that sweet dog that was our constant companion up through high school before she passed away. I cannot say any dog since can compare to her, as she was our first dog. I don't think I have ever used such a small amount of items on a page. It feels weird. Mono Lakes is different than any place I have ever seen, and due to the fact that there are no water way in or out of the lake, it concentrates all its chemicals, and makes for an interest ecosystem. I was also surprised to find that the majority of California Gulls (85%) lay their eggs on the small island in the center of the lake. Because of the time of year, we did not see many gulls (you can see only one in the lower center of the photograph. I love the sky in this photo as it was a day where we were told we had heavy rain on the way. We were there for over an hour, and although the sky on half the lake became very dark, the other have was partly cloudy, so it made for some interesting photos. My DD from 94. Since Santa was not really able to visit every place that he is requested, Rachel's daycare owner stood in for Santa. I loved that Rachel was not afraid to speak to him and gave him a sweet kiss and a big hug. I couldn't believe the little chunk of curls that went down the middle of her forehead that day - So cute. 1st Page Journaling reads: When Santa visited Mother Goose Day Care, Rachel took her turn to tell Santa What she wants for Christmas, and of course she gives him a kiss and a hug! 2nd page journaling: (top photo) I took the afternoon off so that I too, could visit with Santa for a bit. Rachel was so excited about being able to talk to him. We made certain to dress in Christmas colors for the celebration. (middle photo) Daniel, Debra's son always helped with daycare after school. He truly loved spending time with all the kids, and Rachel adored hom. We always called him Dangle, as Rachel was unable to pronounce is name correctly. (Bottom Photo) Rachel Ann, Rachel and Brandon, so happy to see Santa. It was such a special day for all the children with Christmas just days away. We were sad that for some reason, Debra seemed to disappear for a bit, and missed seeing santa herself. I loved that little ruffled skirt, and remember many a day that we would venture over to thepark. As a toddler, she was so full of smiles all the time - every little thing was big event to Rachel - she was such a blessing (and still is). Journaling reads: Before we moved into our home, we were told that the vacant land across the street would be either a school, more homes, or a park. We were thrilled on the day that we found out it would indeed be a park, and watched as it took shape as the grass and trees were planted, a fence installed around a ball field, benches, picnic tables, and a play area, with swings, a jungle gym and sandbox. Silverset Park was completed just in time for our little one. I would put Rachel in her stroller and walk down the hill to the entrance, and then across the park to the play area. How Rachel loved to run on the grass, or climb on the jungle gym, swing on the swing, or play in the sand box. Oh how much fun she had in our very own park across the street. Galleta Meadows is the home of metal “Sky Art”, commisioned by Dennis Avery. Although these animals are erected on private land he purchased in the 1990’s, it is open to the public for all to enjoy. This land is now inhabited by creatures from as far back as 3 million year ago, and mainly those which at one point inhabited the area. It began after Avery funded a book called “Fossils Treasures of the Anza Borrego Desert”, and then met Recardo Breceda, a sculptor who was creating dinosaurs in Perris, CA. He decided to commission these works of art, starting first with three giant tusked gomphotheres — ancient members of the elephant family. They now include over 70 sculptures including wild pigs, sabertooth tigers, ancient camels, llamas, tortoises and monstrous meat eating birds. Although no dinosaur remain have been found in the area, he has included some. My favorite are these horses of Galleta Meadows. I knew the house, as it is a home that my aunt and uncle lived in. In researching my ancestry, I found that the home was originally lived in by my great grandmother, which is how I decided who it must have been. Another clue was the dalmation. Journaling reads: You met every new circumstance with such delight, able to play on your own, & never needing to be entertained. I was in awe, just watching you giggle & play with a simple plastic container. It could keep your interest for quite a while. My happy baby! It was a major feat (for me), as I am use to creating and printing one page at a time. So very stressful - but it is completed, and ordered, and I cannot wait until I receive it. I had a coupon that was about to expire, so it was do or die to get the final two pages completed, in the book, and ordered. YEAH!!! Sorry - I forgot to add the link. Hope this works: share.shuterfly ***TFL***

11 comments Wed, 18 May 2011 06:43:29 +0000 Curious Little Bird

by: tylertooo

Description}: I struggled for a long time to figure out a way to scrap this photo of Rachel at 9 1/2 months, being followed by the Cockatoo we had at the time. With the help of the Sat. Scraplift, I finally got it done. This little bird was the sweetest thing, however, we gave her to a friend shortly after this, as we just didn't want to risk Rachel getting bitten. Tyler did not bite unless you asked for it, and we all know how tough a toddler can be on animals. Tyler is now 26 years old and doing fine with her second owner, but I still miss her dearly. Journaling reads: For years Tyler had lots of attention, and the run of the house while I was home. Now with the birth of Rachel, Tyler had to be carefully supervised when out of her cage. She had never been exposed to children, so she was very curious about this little girl, and although Tyler was a real sweet and cuddley little bird, we knew how strong her beak was, so we were always on guard to protect our sweet Rachel. The more we tried to keep Tyler from Rachel, the more she seemd to want to check her out. This has to be have been taken in the mid 1920's. I love how formal things were with their hair just perfect, and their fancy dresses. I would have loved to have known them when they were little. I spent hours trying to figure the right way to scrap such a special photo.
