It was perfect to showcase numerous photos from my daughter's recent road trip to Chicago! A whirlwind adventure! (All photos by Shannon using her iPhone 4S) JOURNALING Yep... a real road trip. All the way from Minneapolis to Chicago with Sara xxx to see the Cubs vs. Phillies game at iconic, 100-year- old Wrigley Field. How could you pass on that? Getting up at 4am and driving for 6˝ hours wasn’t too exciting, but the game was fun--way colder than you thought it’d be--and you enjoyed a real “Chicago Dog” for lunch! You drove around downtown Chicago for about an hour (so cool!), stopping at the famous “Bean”, of course. Then a 4-hour drive heading back, stopping in Tomah, Wisconsin for the night. 2˝ hours more on Sunday back to MN. What an amazing, whirlwind trip! Lucky you! APRIL 2014 (Journaling along the right side of the photos) And why yes, that is a Chicago Cubs hat you’re wearing! And, no, it wasn’t a souvenir! You’re actually a Cubs fan so when you decided to go on this trip, you requested your hat! I sent it “Priority Mail” and it arrived at the dorm on Friday afternoon... just in the nick of time! LOL I love this photo of my godson/nephew and I... even though my lovely sister neglected to notice the porta-potties in the background! hahaha! She took this photo after a really long day (a planned four hours turned into nearly 12!)... me with my godson/nephew after one of his college baseball games! So fun to shoot another sport! *wink* Yes, there will be a companion layout for this with all the action! JOURNALING You are such a great kid and I’m so happy I’m not only your auntie, but your godmother! I always enjoy watching your games and I’m so proud of your efforts on the field! I was so very happy that I turned around to come back today*... 13 innings! Wowee! I love watching you play! You’re a great asset to your team... don’t ever forget that! And, of course... I loved being able to take photos! 100s of them... all of you! *smiley* *After driving in traffic for over two hours, then seeing a game that Walker didn’t play in, then watching 5 innings of the 2nd game with him still on the bench, I decided I needed to head home. Two minutes after I left the field, Laurie texted that Walker went in! Yep... I turned around and went back! After all that, I just had to see him take the field! So be warned... more weather to come! *grin* My daughter has experienced all the changing seasons as a student at the University of Minnesota... with the winter they had, she's experienced more than expected! But, as a native Southern Californian, she's enjoyed the whole experience... well, except for those -15° days! LOL These views are from a section of Shannon's running route along the river! And, yes... I'm awaiting my spring photo of the river! What a superb (and fun!) challenge, Carol... thank you! JOURNALING Part of the reason you wanted to go to college outside of California was to experience the seasons... warm ‘Indian’ summers, the beautiful colors of fall and, yes, even the snow! Oh, and a little known fact about me... I'm a crazy fanatical school/club/athletic fan! LOL (And, wow... I packed a lot of stuff on this page! Whew!) Oh, and I really don't like these selfies, but they help tell the story! JOURNALING AH, YEAH. This is me. So me. Decked out in school colors. Decal on my car. Ah, yeah... *similey* And, why, yes... I was cheerleader in high school... why do you ask? (hahaha) I’ve always been a avid supporter of the teams I love and the schools I attended. And, when I had kids, that spirit carried on and I was the parent that always wore team colors or spirit wear and had a decal in my rear car window! (One thing I haven‘t done yet is fly a team flag at the house... hmmmm...) And even though I’m not physically in Minnesota, yep... I’ve got Gopher spirit goin’ on! If Shannon has a UM soccer game, I sport the maroon and gold (along with my special “soccer mom” necklace, of course!). And, if the Gophers have a football game, out comes the UM spirit wear, too! Which must’ve been the reason they started out the season so great, right? Win after win... 8-2 with only 3 games remaining. And, this included beating perennial powerhouses Nebraska and Penn State. It must’ve been my spirit! Right...? AND THEN THIS HAPPENED. They lost. To Wisconsin (who was highly ranked, but still...). At the end of the game, it dawned on me... oh, my gosh! I hadn’t put on a UM tee... gasp! Oh, no! What did I (not) do? Oh, geez... and, so, I confessed to my daughter. And, here’s what Shannon had to say about that... The text message pictured... in case it's hard to read! Yes, a bit tongue-in-cheek! ME: And, I just realized why the Gophers lost... I was in my jammie shirt and NOT my Minnesota shirt! I started going with Lisa's fall theme which made me think of some beautiful fall landscape shots Shannon had sent me from Minnesota which led to it being football season in the fall which then made me remember these fun photos she shared with me! Whew! So, there ya go... *grin* And, yes... this was a HUGE game for Minnesota, beating #5-ranked (at the time) Nebraska at home! So, the excitement in the stadium was electric! I liked Lisa's vertical format, but since my photos were horizontal, I had to rotate my canvas. I picked up on Lisa's tape on the photo frames and kept the fall colors (which happen to be perfect with Minnesota's school colors!) for the papers and brushwork. I loved the leaves tucked behind Lisa's photos, but on my layout they proved too much, so it's 'bare'! Ha. (And yes, I'm bringing back Katie's cool "All Set" wooden alphas... my new obsession! LOL) Thanks, Wendy, for picking such a great inspiration piece for the DD Blog SSL challenge! JOURNALING Minnesota vs Nebraska... the Big Ten... college football... game day at TCF Stadium. Lauren had an extra ticket she shared with you and, boy, are you glad you had that ticket! What a day for Golden Gopher football fans! Minnesota 34 | Nebraska 23 A huge win for Minnesota and an exciting time to be in the stands... especially seated in the crazy, loud and fun student section! After the game, the students stormed the field and you and Lauren were right in the mix! Everyone was cheering and yelling and waving flags and banners! You happened to run into the star running back, David Cobb... and said: “GOOD GAME!” You and Lauren wound up at midfield and fell to the ground and had someone snap this fun photo! JOURNALING I love sending Shannon little packages now and again. Sometimes I even send BIG ones! Sometimes I send things she needs... sometimes I send her a package “just because”. She loves getting an email from the front desk saying a package is waiting. Or checking her little mailbox and finding mail! I usually include a Starbucks card or maybe a $20 bill... almost always I add a pack or two of her favorite gum (Orbit Cinnamon). Today I got a text from her, thanking me for the latest package I’d sent, but letting me know that I really didn’t need to send her anymore gum... apparently, she’s got enough to last her until next year! I loved the multiple photos across the page and the simple design. Since I'm quite blending-challenged (LOL), I let Katie do the blending for me! *wink* Thanks, 'nana_vg' for the inspiration! This was the best trip ever! Four major cities in Europe as a chaperone for Shannon's AP Art History class... I got to see wonderful places with my daughter and her friends! A whirlwind, to be sure, but simply the best! JOURNALING Throughout the trip, Tom warned us about pickpockets and keeping our valuables safe as we toured each city. As the “mom” to your group, I continued to remind you girls to swing your purses to the front or get them off the back of a chair, etc. My newly-found (and often-spoke) “job” morphed into being “anti-pickpocket” which then became “APP”! And you girls became the “APP girls”. For the rest of the trip, all I needed to say was “A-P-P, Annie” or “A-P-P, Vicky” and you’d swing your purse or camera bag around and guard it! And, all throughout the trip, we had APP photos with all or some of the APP girls at various points of interest. It was a lovely, happy group of girls and to this day, each one of them still remembers our motto: APP! It’s a “Titanium Edition” so it did come with some pretty snazzy wheels and a sportier suspension. But, then... well... it went like this: You contacted your friend, Nick, who worked at Tag Motorsports, and pretty soon you had it all planned out... you knew exactly what you wanted to do: New tires and wheels, a light window tint, some engine mods, a new front grille. Nick helped get you good deals on all this through Tag. It’s such a head-turner that Tag Motorsports used it on their website (see the webpage description below) and, again with Nick’s assistance, Falken Tire used it for a photo shoot for an ad, as well. (Although Falken had to swap out the tires for Falkens! haha) TAG MOTORSPORTS WEBSITE: This 2012 Audi A4 2.0T came out very special. Less is certainly more! I (obviously) lifted the idea of a landscape photo and 'cutting' it into sections... a clever technique! I created odd angled cuts to accentuate that spit of land and the peaks of the mountains in the distance. I also liked the cluster on the one side and instead of cut circles, I used "looping" ink swirls! A most beautiful late afternoon vista on my run yesterday... we're fortunate to be a block or so away from a nature preserve filled with paved and unpaved trails. The mountains (you can see the "Saddleback") are about 30 miles away so it was a fairly clear day! JOURNALING A beautiful view across the Back Bay to Eastbluff with the Santa Ana Mountains in the background... Thank you, Mel! And, while Mel's album cover certainly inspires a holiday vibe, I went a different direction! I did use the centered circle (duh!) but "cut" my circle in half with a sticker title instead of the banner. It was the perfect way to include the flag as part of the story without having all the "dead" space in between it and Beckie and me! We went to Outback (it was close!) and had the fastest service EVER at an Outback (in CA or in MI!) but we didn’t let them push us out the door... nope, we just sat and talked and talked. (Although I think I did TOO much talking! LOL). We finally had to leave ‘cuz Beckie had to pack for her early flight home the next morning. Rats. And, somehow, this page just happened... not at all what I started out to scrap, but it took on a mind of its own! And, I'm kinda liking the different vibe... I think it might become the cover or title page of the book I'll be creating of his after-high-school soccer! And, no... he doesn't play for PSG! I wish! LOL All the teams in this league wear uniforms from the Mexican pro league (Liga MX) or one of the European leagues (in Derek's case, Paris St. Germain from Ligue 1 in France). I'm not sure if it's because her birthday is on the 14th and, when she was younger, I kept all Christmas decor away until her party and celebration were over, but for the past few (ha) years, the day after Thanksgiving, the lights are up and then the decorating begins! And, look at her... she's decorating her dorm room, too! She LOVES Christmas! JOURNALING Shannon is the biggest traditionalist I know. Holidays are especially important to her and Christmas is extra special. At her insistence, we put up the outside lights over Thanksgiving weekend and the next weekend is reserved for the Christmas tree and interior decorations. And interior decorations mean her bedroom, too. She has twinkle lights and a mini tree (complete with ornaments) that get set up each year. Since she’s in Minnesota, we had to change it up a bit this year... everything was put up over Thanksgiving because she was home. And, yep... it would appear that she’s started a new holiday tradition: Decorating the dorm room! Thank goodness for the $5 sale table at Target... she couldn’t resist! And, up first... the twinkle lights! But, the pink on the shot was the perfect jumping off point and away I went (pun intended!) on a pastel layout! Thanks for the kick, Mel! JOURNALING So, Esther had linked me up with a flight tracker website when she and Carol flew here from Australia. It hit me after I dropped you off at the airport that I could maybe track your flight back to Minnesota. I was happy to find that I could follow your flight, so I had it up and running on the computer until you landed! It was actually pretty fun to watch the “plane” track across the western states and finally “land” on the MSP ‘dot’! (LEFT PHOTO; in the restaurant) decided to brave the -2 degree weather at the end... (MIDDLE PHOTO; ventured outside) started to regret that decision... (RIGHT PHOTO; outside and freezing!) (main journaling) Shannon accepted an invitation to the “@Home in MN” (a UM first-year/ transfer student program) viewing of the annual “Holidazzle” light parade in downtown Minneapolis! She was offered a free guest pass, too, so she invited Alyssa from her soccer team. Everyone was bussed to a curbside restaurant to view the parade. Since the temps were below 0°, most people were happy to see the show from inside! But, towards the end of the parade, the girls decided to venture outside... I mean, really... you’ve gotta see all those twinkling lights ‘in real life’, right? Shannon sent me photos to prove that they did go watch outside in the -2° weather! In the first photo outside, it doesn’t look too cold. Heck, Alyssa doesn’t even have a hat on... although she is from Wisconsin! *smiley* But by the end of the parade...? Sorry, it's not the best photo (I've got an old iPhone 4... hehehe) but as Carol always says "It's not the photo, it's the memory!" Pam's wonderful layout, Leaving on a jet plane was the perfect starting point and inspiration for me! Like Hillarey, I framed my single photo and I loved the wood background on Hillarey's layout... so different from the usual background paper I choose. (She went light; I went dark!) My favorite thing on her layout (besides her amazing journaling!) is the diagonal arrows! What movement it brings to the page! I placed my journaling in the upper left corner like she did (what a clever spot!) and I added the date stamp (with a bit of color) to the bottom right for balance. JOURNALING One of my favorite things in your dorm room is the photo wall! You had this vision one day before you left for the U and printed all these special photos: Your family, your friends and some great landscape shots you’ve taken, along with some cool photos of your favorite entertainers and professional athletes. In her youth (she's only 20 now... hahaha!), she was lucky to be able to train at soccer camps with some of the best players in the world! This particular photo was taken at a camp run by USA National Team player, Shannon Boxx. Her teammate, Abby Wambach, came to camp one day to train with the girls... it was such a thrill for Shannon and her teammates! And, if you don't follow US Women's Soccer, both of these players are long-standing members of our national team and Abby Wambach was the 2012 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year! So, yeah... this was pretty cool for these young players! JOURNALING Competitive youth soccer in SoCal meant tournaments and extra summer training with your coach(es). It also meant summer camps and you were fortunate to have attended some exclusive camps and be trained by very popular and amazing soccer stars. You and your Strikers’ teammates had the opportunity to be trained by some of the best women soccer players in the world... when you‘re 11 years old, it’s pretty awe-inspiring to be trained World Cup champions! You spent time at Julie Foudy’s camps, as well as at Shannon Boxx’s camp. This photo was taken after a day of hard work with Shannon Boxx... we loved Shannon because she was a great player, but she was also a ‘Shannon B’! *smiley* On this day, her USA Women’s National Team teammate, Abby Wambach, had come this day to train with you girls. You proudly told me later than Abby had praised you during training and gave you a piece of advice... she said that if your shorts weren’t dirty at the end of practice or during a game, then you weren’t playing hard enough!
