Shannon sent me this cool shot of the abandoned Berkeley Pier... the pier originally was 3.5 miles long (that's a LONG pier!) but now it's only 2.5 miles long. San Francisco Bay is chipping away at it. Only 3,000 feet is open to the public and there is a 50-foot gap between the public portion and this abandoned portion. I absolutely LOVE flairs and brads and use them on the vast majority of my layouts. Seriously. ("Hello, my name is Debi and I'm addicted to flairs!") I use them to add a small dose of color or to anchor an element or photo. I use them as "bullet points" and at the end of twists and loops or at the end of a journaling block, like a period. There are soooooo many more wonderful ways to use these little gems! On this layout, I created a "doggie pawprint"... *grin* And, I always add PINK flairs to my dog layouts... her AKC registered name is "Kyna Pink". We added her 'middle name' because she was the firstborn female in the litter and had the pink ribbon tied around her neck! *grin* I just love our beautiful doggie... but, when did her beautiful golden blonde start turning a bit white...? Right up my alley! *wink* But, it was a bit of a challenge... Mollie only wanted us to use ONE letter! Hmmmmm... As I pondered the challenge, it came to me that the letter "D" has been a big part of my life, so to speak, and this layout was born! (And, it did occur to me as I worked on this that it's kinda silly, but, hey... what the heck! It was fun!) And, oh, wow... I don't know that I've ever had such a long, long list of credits! LOL But, it sure was fun going on the hunt for different "D"s... I found bazillions of great alphas in the store, on their own and inside kits! JOURNALING One could say that the letter “D” has been a part of my life since the day I was born! Actually, it was a few days after I was born. I was expected to be a boy named Bradley and it took a few days for Mom and Dad to come up with “DEBORAH” for me! Most people call me Debi, but Dad calls me “Dee” and Laurie calls me “DeDe”. In college, I decided to go through rush and join a sorority. Any idea what house I pledged? Yep... you guessed it: DELTA DELTA DELTA... the Greek letter “D”! Who saw saw that coming? *wink* And when our son was born, even though we didn’t conscious plan a “D” name, he’s DEREK. And, yeah, I often call him “D”. Or Bob, but that’s another story for another time! And, after years of scrapbooking with paper, I finally ‘WENT DIGITAL’ (another “D”!) and found my online home at DESIGNER DIGITALS... or “DD” as we like to say! So, yeah... I’m kind of partial to the letter “D”! And, yes... I do love to DOODLE! Mel's iTunes challenge this month on the DD blog was the perfectly simply composition that this photo needed! It pretty much can stand alone, can't it? And, yep... it was really amazing to see the space shuttle "Endeavour" fly over Southern California! My coworker and I spent about an hour on the rooftop of our building to catch a (far away!) glimpse of it, but it flew right over the school where my sister teaches... I have her to thank for the (much-better-than-mine-close-up!) photo! (Photo Credit: Laurie Marks) JOURNALING The most extraordinary view... U.S. space shuttle “Endeavour” piggy-backed on a “shuttle carrier aircraft” flying over the skies of Southern California on its way to its final destination at the California Science Center in Exposition Park, near USC, in Los Angeles. While Jenny and I viewed the Endeavour from afar on top of the roof of Newport Lido, Laurie snapped this photo as the shuttle literally flew over her school! Near or far, it was truly an amazing sight! LOL So, this one I took a few days before my 'big' birthday! I didn't intend on scrapping it but Katie's new "Antibes" kit has the perfect colors to go with my outfit and then Kim posted her selfie challenge and... well... here's a color-coordinated selfie! *grin* JOURNALING May 2014. I’m 60... um... when did that happen? Geesh! That said... I’m really OK with it. I’m within 5 lbs. of my goal weight and “Body Combat” strong! *smiley* Nope... I don’t feel “old” in the slightest! 60 is just a number, right?! Yeah... I know it means I’ve probably (haha) passed ‘mid-life’, but I also feel pretty darn good for being 60 and, whilst I don’t look like I’m 30 or 40, I think I look pretty good “for my age”, as they say! (Yikes! Does that sound conceited?) Anyways, I’ve got many more years to go and I’m not going to let a number wreck the fun! *smiley* ALL SUPPLIES FROM DESIGNER DIGITALS KATIE PERTIET Antibes Solids (background paper) Antibes Paper Pack Antibes Addon (all the patterned paper) Antibes Elements (pin, staples, brad/flair) ***All coming soon!*** Thin Classic Photo Frames Curled and Flat No. 01 (photo and journaling frames) Scribbling Brushes and Stamps No. 05 (scribble brushwork) CATHY ZIELSKE Hybrid Helper No. 03 Layered Template (modified) ALI EDWARDS Selfie 3x4 Journal Cards ("me right now" card) Selfie For The Win Brushes and Stamps (title brush) LYNN GRIEVESON Hint At It Urban No. 02 (number brush in background... this is one of the most versatile brushes ever!) Mimicking Clint Dempsey (on the teeshirt) celebrating a goal! She was 'celebrating' me surprising her with that teeshirt... it arrived in the mail last week! (For those of you who don't follow US soccer, Clint is the captain of the US men's soccer team and has been Shannon's favorite player for about ten years now!) I loved the inspiration layout... I truly loved how Karen separated the large pieces of patterned paper! But, for the life of me, I couldn't do the 'paper thing' so it was brushwork for me! *grin* JOURNALING Shannon was very happy to get the USA soccer / Clint Dempsey teeshirt in the mail! A photo from a long time ago... the first trip to Yosemite for my kids and nephew/godson. My parents were amazing to take three young children exploring all over the western US... what fabulous experiences they all had! Shannon wrote a 9-page essay on Yosemite for one of her classes and asked me for a few photos and this is one of them... I'm sure the photos will help her get an "A" on her paper! JOURNALING To illustrate an essay Shannon was writing about Yosemite, she asked me for a few photos... this is one I found. It was the summer of 1999 and Mom and Dad took Derek, Shannon and Walker to one of their most favorite places in the world: Yosemite National Park. They spent nearly a week there, camping in the motorhome and taking in all the beauty and wonder and majesty of Yosemite. This photo was taken at Mirror Lake, at the foot of Half Dome. Ali's new "selfie" word art is perfect for so many photos taken these days, isn't it? Although I don't take many selfies, honestly... I did want to catch a quick one of me and my dad (who's so short 'cuz he's sitting in his wheelchair!) this past weekend! So I had to tell the story of our day... including the selfie! *grin* A lunch hour layout... so fun to scrap at work! LOL And, it's also a bit of a challenge since I don't have all my wonderful DD goodies on my work computer. (I try to keep my personal files to a minimum... although I don't really know why! LOL) JOURNALING Dad came along for the ride (literally... in his wheelchair!) when I went looking for new appliances. I picked him up at 12:30 and we drove to Pacific Sales in Torrance. And proceeded to spend the next 3½ hours inside the store! We looked, we touched, we asked questions, we balked at some of the prices... crazy! When I started getting a little hungry, I gasped when I saw it was after 4:00pm! So, I suggested we finish up and head out to lunch... er... an early dinner! Dad wholeheartedly agreed, but as we passed this mirror, I stopped and said to Dad... FIRST LET'S TAKE A SELFIE And then we headed out to lunch! *smiley* Dad suggested we try the Black Bear Diner and so we did. It was perfect to showcase numerous photos from my daughter's recent road trip to Chicago! A whirlwind adventure! (All photos by Shannon using her iPhone 4S) JOURNALING Yep... a real road trip. All the way from Minneapolis to Chicago with Sara xxx to see the Cubs vs. Phillies game at iconic, 100-year- old Wrigley Field. How could you pass on that? Getting up at 4am and driving for 6½ hours wasn’t too exciting, but the game was fun--way colder than you thought it’d be--and you enjoyed a real “Chicago Dog” for lunch! You drove around downtown Chicago for about an hour (so cool!), stopping at the famous “Bean”, of course. Then a 4-hour drive heading back, stopping in Tomah, Wisconsin for the night. 2½ hours more on Sunday back to MN. What an amazing, whirlwind trip! Lucky you! LOL I love this photo of my godson/nephew and I... even though my lovely sister neglected to notice the porta-potties in the background! hahaha! She took this photo after a really long day (a planned four hours turned into nearly 12!)... me with my godson/nephew after one of his college baseball games! So fun to shoot another sport! *wink* Yes, there will be a companion layout for this with all the action! JOURNALING You are such a great kid and I’m so happy I’m not only your auntie, but your godmother! I always enjoy watching your games and I’m so proud of your efforts on the field! I was so very happy that I turned around to come back today*... 13 innings! Wowee! I love watching you play! You’re a great asset to your team... don’t ever forget that! And, of course... I loved being able to take photos! 100s of them... all of you! *smiley* *After driving in traffic for over two hours, then seeing a game that Walker didn’t play in, then watching 5 innings of the 2nd game with him still on the bench, I decided I needed to head home. Two minutes after I left the field, Laurie texted that Walker went in! Yep... I turned around and went back! After all that, I just had to see him take the field! But, as a native Southern Californian, she's enjoyed the whole experience... well, except for those -15° days! LOL These views are from a section of Shannon's running route along the river! And, yes... I'm awaiting my spring photo of the river! What a superb (and fun!) challenge, Carol... thank you! Oh, and I really don't like these selfies, but they help tell the story! JOURNALING AH, YEAH. This is me. So me. Decked out in school colors. Decal on my car. Ah, yeah... *similey* And, why, yes... I was cheerleader in high school... why do you ask? (hahaha) I’ve always been a avid supporter of the teams I love and the schools I attended. And, when I had kids, that spirit carried on and I was the parent that always wore team colors or spirit wear and had a decal in my rear car window! (One thing I haven‘t done yet is fly a team flag at the house... hmmmm...) And even though I’m not physically in Minnesota, yep... I’ve got Gopher spirit goin’ on! If Shannon has a UM soccer game, I sport the maroon and gold (along with my special “soccer mom” necklace, of course!). And, if the Gophers have a football game, out comes the UM spirit wear, too! Which must’ve been the reason they started out the season so great, right? Win after win... 8-2 with only 3 games remaining. And, this included beating perennial powerhouses Nebraska and Penn State. It must’ve been my spirit! Right...? AND THEN THIS HAPPENED. They lost. To Wisconsin (who was highly ranked, but still...). At the end of the game, it dawned on me... oh, my gosh! I hadn’t put on a UM tee... gasp! Oh, no! What did I (not) do? Oh, geez... and, so, I confessed to my daughter. And, here’s what Shannon had to say about that... The text message pictured... in case it's hard to read! Yes, a bit tongue-in-cheek! ME: And, I just realized why the Gophers lost... I was in my jammie shirt and NOT my Minnesota shirt! I started going with Lisa's fall theme which made me think of some beautiful fall landscape shots Shannon had sent me from Minnesota which led to it being football season in the fall which then made me remember these fun photos she shared with me! Whew! So, there ya go... *grin* And, yes... this was a HUGE game for Minnesota, beating #5-ranked (at the time) Nebraska at home! So, the excitement in the stadium was electric! I liked Lisa's vertical format, but since my photos were horizontal, I had to rotate my canvas. I picked up on Lisa's tape on the photo frames and kept the fall colors (which happen to be perfect with Minnesota's school colors!) for the papers and brushwork. I loved the leaves tucked behind Lisa's photos, but on my layout they proved too much, so it's 'bare'! Ha. (And yes, I'm bringing back Katie's cool "All Set" wooden alphas... my new obsession! LOL) Thanks, Wendy, for picking such a great inspiration piece for the DD Blog SSL challenge! JOURNALING Minnesota vs Nebraska... the Big Ten... college football... game day at TCF Stadium. Lauren had an extra ticket she shared with you and, boy, are you glad you had that ticket! What a day for Golden Gopher football fans! Minnesota 34 | Nebraska 23 A huge win for Minnesota and an exciting time to be in the stands... especially seated in the crazy, loud and fun student section! After the game, the students stormed the field and you and Lauren were right in the mix! Everyone was cheering and yelling and waving flags and banners! You happened to run into the star running back, David Cobb... and said: “GOOD GAME!” You and Lauren wound up at midfield and fell to the ground and had someone snap this fun photo!
