[U]JOURNALING[/U] Day One of State Cup... warm, clear and VERY windy. Day Two of State Cup... warm, extremely windy and not clear at all. By the afternoon, dust was blowing all over the area and as we drove to the fields, we could see a huge dust storm building in the distance. Shortly after we arrived at the fields, the dust reached us. But, the games continued and by the time your game started, the dust was gone. Thank goodness! It was still really windy and hard to track the ball, but no whirling dust. Yay! Description}: A few days late, but hey... I got [i]something[/i] scrapped this busy weekend! Yay! And all thanks to the wonderful Saturday Scraplift and Liz's wonderful, inspirational layout! [U]JOURNALING[/U] So this morning, I heard a strange, pecking noise... a continuous (and somewhat annoying) pecking outside the kitchen. I went outside to see what it was and I found this woodpecker on the eucalyptus tree... just happily pecking away! I ran back inside to grab my camera and was happy to find the bird still pecking away! Description}: Shannon's been busy on the soccer fields of SoCal this spring... she was invited to play with a team from her old club, invited to play on a women's team and guested with yet another team! Description}: What a treat to peruse Jenelle's gallery! There were so many lovely layouts to chose from to lift for today's blog challenge... and yes, it's still Saturday here in California! *grin* I lifted [b][u][url=http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=181764&title=throwdown-3a-this-is-goo&cat=500]"This is Goodness"[/b][/u][/url]... I loved the composition of the three separate frames, the connections between them, the brushwork and the title right on the focal photo. Instead of photo frames, I used three blocks of color brushes which I connected (well, sort of...) with the "pencil twists". And, yes, I added my title right on the photo! Thanks, Jenelle... you are always an inspiration! And, for brush challenged folks like me, Katie made it SO easy to splash color on this page! Shannon took this photo at the start of the race when all the participants tossed colored powder into the clear blue sky! [U]JOURNALING[/U] You, Katie and Rachel xxxx and Brittany xxxx (a friend of Rachel�s drove to L.A. to be a part of the �Run or Dye� 5K race. You and Katie ran the course; Rachel and Brittany walked. But, all of you had tons of fun... and tons of colors on you when you got home! I think it took a half an hour to clean up! *smiley* But it was worth a fun day with friends! Description}: I knew exactly what I was going to scrap for this week's "One Theme, Three Scrappers" challenge on the [b][url=http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/blog/]DD Blog[/b][/url]--my very Danish grandmother who baked an awesome Swedish Kringler! *grin* Maybe she got the recipe after my dad married my mom, whose family is Swedish! That's one of those stories that were never told... I added little flag images from both countries but kept the red and white of Denmark in the forfront, adding a tucked Swedish flag and tiny strips of blue and yellow cardstock to represent the Swedish part of the story! [u]JOURNALING[/U] Gertrude Carstensen was her maiden name... quite a mouthful, I�m sure, when she was a little girl. This is my grandma on Dad�s side of the family... the Danish side of our (mostly) Scandinavian family. [Mom�s side of the family hail from Sweden.] Anyways, Gram was always very proud of her Danish heritage and inspired my interest, not only in our family heritage, but my love of travel and fancy for languages... although I yet to learn Danish! *smiley* But, one thing always made me laugh... her love of baking rang true to her Danish upbringing, but why did she make such a delicious Swedish Kringler? Pattie made me smile...

Description}: This is one of the hardest layouts I've had to do. I mean, how do you capture the wonderfulness that was Pattie in some words on a layout...? Impossible. And how does one smile when one is so sad? Impossible...? Not so much when I think of Pattie 'cuz she always made me smile and I will forever be thankful we shared a friendship, a sisterhood... and a brad, staple or enamel soccer ball or two... Pattie, my friend, you are missed and oh, so loved... [U]JOURNALING[/U] In all the infinite sadness of the past few days, I smile. Because Pattie just made me smile. Always. (See? She�s �making� me smile in this fun, silly photo!) whether we were chatting, emailing, PMing or hanging out in Las Vegas, Pattie made me smile. I think... no, I know... she made everyone smile. And grin. And laugh out loud. She always made me feel special and appreciated. And, no matter what the subject was, we�d end up smiling and laughing and lovin� life again! And, now... I�ll think about Pattie every single time I scrapbook. Honestly. Every time. You see... besides her being a very, very special friend... it�s nearly impossible for me to complete a layout without using a brad or staple or that oh-so-very-well-used-and-now-so-precious enamel soccer ball... all created by Pattie. So, yes,every time I scrap, I�ll think of Pattie. And yes, I�ll smile. Because she always made me smile. And, always will... I miss you tons, buddy... xoxo... At the start of the game and at the start of the half, you and Josie would walk onto the field and do this little hand shake/fist pump thing you had made up. And now... into your college years... winter break... you both were invited by your NHHS teammate, Jenny Mu�oz, to play on a women�s team in the Mexican League. Sofia wasn�t flying in from NorCal until later that night, Katie had finals and Olivia was still in school, so it was just the two of you. In spite of that and the cold weather and impending rain, you both had a great time! And since most SoCal schools were still in session, there were hardly any lines, so you went on all your favorite rides again and again and again... like Silver Bullet, Ghostrider and Jaguar. You also went on the train, the log ride and the mine ride... classic Knott�s rides! Description}: When I saw Lynn's new kit and template, I knew they'd be perfect for these photos I took of our sweet doggie last week. Description}: The minute I saw the template challenge on the [b][url=http://blog.designerdigitals.com/]DD blog[/b][/url], I knew what I wanted to document... funny how I've never jotted down any of these years-old traditions! Thanks for the challenge, Kim! [U]JOURNALING[/U] HOLIDAY TOP TEN PREPARATIONS: The kids would go to Mom and Dad�s a few days early to help set up for Christmas Eve... cleaning silver and china, baking cookies, picking up rolls at the bakery, unpacking the card tables and chairs... they absolutely loved it! THE BOLER FAMILY: Going to Bud and Martha�s for dinner on Christmas. We�d always have drinks, pass out presents and unwrap them at the same time in a frenzy! After dinner, we�d take a family photo in front of the fireplace. Where did all those photos go? SANTA CLAUS: We would visit Santa at the Santa Ana Country Club with Bud and Martha. Before dinner was a puppet show... magicians and balloon artists would wander thru the dinner tables. And then... one-by-one the tables were called to see Santa! CHRISTMAS DINNERS: It was turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, lots of side dishes and cookies at Mom and Dad�s. Martha would prepare prime rib and make plum pudding. Bud or Gary would pour rum on the pudding at �set it on fire�... so exciting! THE EHLERS FAMILY: Dinner and clean-up always came before opening the presents. Everyone pitched in so it�d be quicker until presents! The kids would sit in a circle and open one present at a time, by age: Jeff, Derek, Jake, Shannon, Walker and Laney. DECORATIONS: We would put up the outside lights the weekend after Thanksgiving, but no decor on the inside would go up until after Shannon�s birthday party! I never wanted her to think Christmas was more special than her birthday! SLEEPING OVER: Until just a few years ago, we would spend Christmas Eve over night at Mom and Dad�s and Santa would come to San Pedro! It was so much fun to have my parents there to see the kids� excitiment on Christmas morning! CAROLING: When the kids were little and too impatient waiting for clean- up before opening presents, Dad, Rick, Dale and Merle would take the kids caroling on the block while the moms would clean-up after dinner. Everyone loved it! THE TREE: After Derek and Shannon set up our pretty �fake� tree, it�s my turn to string the lights. Then Rick hands out all the ornaments to us, making sure a hanger is attached to each one. The last thing to go on is the topper and Rick gets that honor! NEW YEAR�S EVE: Until Derek turned 21, we spent NYE at our house eating homemade �trail mix�, M&Ms and red licorice with Massimo�s pizza for dinner! We watch movies until 11:30 and then it�s time for Dick Clark�s broadcast from New York City! Description}: I realize that this is WAY out of season, so to speak, but I finally got it done! This is one of those layouts that you start and can't finish 'cuz something is not right, so you set it aside and then come back to it. And, then you repeat that... finally, the mojo hits and --voil�!-- it's done! And, then you ponder again... and just give up and say "I'm done with it!" *grin* And, yes... we actually are Irish! (FIL was 100% Irish... his parents changed O'Bowler to Boler when they came to the U.S.) I "painted" that not-so-good 'tattoo' of the Irish flag on Derek's arm... I did a four-leaf clover on the other arm. I do NOT have a future as a tattoo artist! LOL [U]JOURNALING[/U] For the first time in a long time, you went to a Halloween party and actually wore a costume! Not only that, but you came up with the idea yourself and wore the same costume to another Halloween party the next night! I thought it was an unusual costume, but pretty clever, too! You were a �fanatical fan� of Irish rugby! You found this rugby shirt at a thrift store, rolled sweatpants into green striped soccer socks and added a new pair of neon orange Nikes... which are actually pretty hip and cool! (And, yes, you wear them!) I added a couple of �tattoos� to your arms and you were off to the HALLOWEEN PARTY 2012. I�m not quite sure what the �gold chains� were about, but hey... it�s all about the fun and you had fun! Whenever the team flies �MilAir� (military transport as opposed to a commercial airline), the freshmen get first �dibs� on the �nav seat�. And you nabbed it twice! And, even got the aft refueling observation window on the return flight in the KC-135. Truly amazing experiences! Description}: Extreme gratitude tonight as my darling daughter left her wallet at a Krispy Kreme in Long Beach (about 30-40 minutes away)... by the time she got home and realized it, they closed. But the night manager answered the phone and yes, they had her wallet! A million thanks, indeed! And, if you were curious about my friend, Kim, being 'FTM1'... I'm 'FTM2'! Her son and Shannon were in the same squadron during basic training... they were "Flying Tigers", so she and I dubbed ourselves "Flying Tigers Moms" back when we became friends! Especially Tayisha who works at the Krispy Kreme location in Long Beach because she found Shannon�s wallet, accidentally left on a table after she and Nicolette were there with members of the Christian fellowship Nico belongs to at CSULB.
