Lots of Canadian firsts in 1957, first woman appointed to Cabinet, first deployment of Peace Keepers, first Thanksgiving on a fixed date in October, Front Page Challenge (a staple of Canadian TV) debuted on the CBC, the first Avro Arrow prototype, the only me...... The pink card was attached to my bassinette in the hospital, and the birth announcement was what my parents sent out to friends and family. Description}: This is the second of two pages inspired by this challenge. The first was too personal and would mean nothing to anyone else with the journalling obscured. This page was inspired by Ali's Inspiration #5 in yesterday's chat. I want to leave a record of why I suddenly disappeared from my family's history. Two of my siblings are no longer speaking to me. That said, I will not be sharing my journalling on this page either, because I recognize that there are two sides to every story and that the Internet is forever. Suffice it to say that I have bought out my siblings and the family cottage now belongs to me. Turtle Crossing

Description}: In my neck of the woods, this is a pretty common sign. Turtles rarely run out in front of cars, but many are run over while trying to cross the highway. Just a gentle reminder to drivers to avoid them when they can. This little painted turtle (yellow on the cheeks and red on the shell) was crossing the cottage road on Sunday. As a kid I used to pick them up carry them across the road, which is how I know that they empty their bladders when you pick them up......which is intended to cause you to put them down again! Now I hold them at arm's length....or just take their picture....Thanks for looking! KPertiet-challenge freebie background, marker masks

Description}: It is no secret that I love both my macro lens and Monarch butterflies. This female was the last of my little collection to emerge last September. I was photographing her as her wings dried and noticed that she was drinking, you can see a droplet on her proboscis. Thank you Anke for the challenge and Katie for the freebie! Incredible journey

Description}: The second lesson in Jana's new class. Probably the first time (OK, the second....the first was when I couldn't take her Blueprints class because I only had PSE) that I have regretted not having full Photoshop. Jana's page had beautiful flowing ribbons created in PS. I was determined to try things the hard way (Pisces, you know...) and had some moderate success with filter>distort>liquify>warp tool and a large brush. I think I need some more practise, but I like the way my first attempt turned out! Thanks, Jana! KPertiet-Traveller maps no 1

Description}: The mid-week lesson from Jana's new class. Thank you for sharing your talents with us Jana! I just read an article about the monarch butterfly. The population over-wintering in Mexico has dwindled for the 20th consecutive year. It is estimated that there are now 1/15th as many monarchs as there were in 1997, a staggering statistic. The population is estimated by the number of acres covered by the butterflies in their winter home in Mexico. Last year they covered 7.14 acres of forest, this year it is only 2.93 acres.

They had their formal on Saturday evening and Isabel was valedictorian for her year. I didn't make her dress this year, she wanted to look for one on her own. She found this one in a thrift store, for $5.00. I couldn't have bought the zipper for that. She looked lovely. Description}: Prompted by a comment made by a cashier in the grocery store this morning. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but she told the gentleman ahead of me in line, that they no longer accepted pennies. I politely pointed out that the penny was still legal tender and therefore, had to be accepted by her. She argued, that she no longer had pennies in her till. I agreed that she might not be able to give them as change any longer, but that she was still obligated to accept them from customers. She argued some more, then said that she stood corrected.... In a fiscally responsible move by our government, the penny, (which cost $0.016 to make) is no longer minted in Canada. Will future generations offer a nickel for your thoughts? Description}: My friend's son got a camera for Christmas. Every morning at breakfast, we made a list of 10 things that we had to take a picture of that day, like a scavenger hunt. It was supposed to be an exercise to make him observe things around him.....His suggestions for the list were usually "someone with red hair, blue flip flops" and mine were "a sign in Spanish, an animal who lives in Cuba". We mostly compromised on our choices so that he didn't have to work too hard and I didn't have to go home with 70 pictures of Canadian tourists. This picture was for "a coconut in a tree". Description}: I went to Cuba with a friend from work and her 9 year old son, Nick. I told them that I wanted to get up early one morning and take pictures on the beach of the sun coming up. To me, that meant, me, on the beach.....My friend insisted that they would both join me and I did appreciate the company. We got up at 5:30 and used my tiny flashlight to make our way to the beach. I had given Nick my gorillapod to use and it kept him busy. Of course, as I hate being late, we were a little early and once my tripod was set up...we waited...in the dark. It was windy and Nick was sitting in the sand in his hoodie and once he had taken a picture or two said, "I think that we should go back to bed, I don't think it's happening today". I assured him that the sun would come up eventually...I saw a shooting star.....and then the sun did come up and we went to breakfast. It was wonderful. Description}: I think that this is my favourite photo from my trip. 'Though it is hard to gauge his age, I think that it is fair to say that he was elderly. His business license was in his shirt pocket, cigar clamped firmly in his teeth and his donkey (mule?) for rent for pictures for 50 centavos.
