The little barn owl - well, not so little, really - doesn't have a mate. At least, not one that I saw. The red-shouldered hawks have nested in the same tree for several years according to a neighbor. Last year, they had 4 chicks. We're anxious to see how many they produce this season. And these birds are NOT shy. They're definitely used to people being around in the yard -- which made it really nice for taking photos of them! Everything on this page is from Katie Pertiet's Coastal Kit.

9 comments Sun, 21 Apr 2013 01:46:38 +0000 Home Sweet Home

by: b2halter

Description}: A hit and run synopsis of our trip to TX last month to get the appliances installed in the new house. This kitty is a frequent visitor at the puddle. He has the most amazing eyes.... I know I've not been around lately. We've had a lot going on. We bought a house in sunny Texas this summer, and we'll be moving into it late next year. In the meantime, we're doing some work there, and trying to get everything tied up, tidied up, and ready to sell here in Ohio. Between work and the trips to TX to get the house ready, I've been meeting myself coming and going. Where do you guys find the energy to keep up with your busy lives, anyway? While I haven't managed a page in forever, I do stop to peek at all of yours at least once a week, and I must say, you've all been turning out some gorgeous pages!! Keep up the good work! Hopefully, things will slow down enough to allow me an occasional foray of my own this winter..... I wish I could tell you which one this is, but I'm afraid I've played so much I've lost track of what I did. I do know I left the fresco layer off because it made the picture too dark, and I used chalk and charcoal instead of charcoal, but darned if I know what else I did. Journaling reads: "My neighbor from across the street stopped over to admire my new flower beds this morning. He noticed that I had my camera in my hand and asked if that’s what I did. I told him it was only a hobby, and we talked a little more. Finally, he said”Why don’t you come over and see my lily? It bloomed all bright and yellow this morning,” And so I did. And while I was there, he told me how the little pond had been for his wife, Peggy. She ‘d had terminal cancer, and he’d built it for her because she liked to sit by the one at the hospice so much. They’d put in several koi, and she’d named each of them. Peggy died about this time last year, and he couldn’t bring himself to get rid of the pond or the koi, because, well, they’re sort of like children now. And they bring him fond memories of Peggy, whom he’d loved deeply and still misses. And so this is...." for Peggy. If I could get away with planting it in my flowerbeds, I would. It just sings of summer, and it always blooms at the same time as the Queen Anne's lace, turning the landscape into a blue and white reflection of the blue skies and fluffy white clouds of summer days. I'm sure most of you have heard of chicory in coffee, but did you know that it's often added to the forage for cattle because it helps prevent intestinal parasites? I don't think that would entice me to take it along on a trip to foreign lands, but it's an interesting reminder that many plants were used for medicines long before pharmaceutical companies came along. Like the project itself, the page was taking me forever to complete. This page will be part of this spread: [IMG][/IMG] And the story behind the page is this: About November last year, I decided to have the 15 ft. high hedge taken out of my "back" yard, thus allowing sunlight to actually reach my back deck - which had been growing moss for so long it was in dire need of replacement before someone fell through it. So, I bit the bullet and opted for a new back deck. With vinyl railings that don't have to be painted or stained. And I set about to find a contractor who could build it for me. The one I chose does custom decks for several of the custom home builders in town, and his work is awesome, so I knew right away he was my man. And I liked the result so well, I decided to do the front porch deck to match. And there's the first hitch. It was a mild winter with hardly any snow. Builders worked all winter. My decks finally got started in February, and the front one in March. Come spring, (second hitch) my landscaper was running in circles trying to keep up with all the work he had, and my walks didn't get framed until late May. I arrived home from a visit in TX on June 4 to find it raining cats and dogs, my lawn torn up, walks partially framed, no concrete due to the weather, and Diesel arriving that evening to spend the weekend and track in mud on my carpet - which he did with amazing alacrity. 2 long weeks later, I was still waiting for concrete to be poured since my landscaper also works for the mobile home park where I live, and they had him busy pouring foundations for new homes. So you can imagine my joy when I came home from work last week to find concrete had been poured!! And Tuesday, my landscaper was back to put in my flower beds!!! My front porch is no longer home to all those containers of plants for my beds. Now, if I can just get the lawn re-seeded and grass growing, I will at last be finished for a while. The new year seems to be starting off with a big bang. And I know winter is lurking back there somewhere, but I can't really say that I'm not just thrilled with all the blue skies, green grass, and sunny days we've been having so far! I'm lovin' it!! Snow in the forecast for this evening, but not too much and it won't last too long (yea!). Know the kids want snow days, but they just make getting to and from work miserable.
