It's where my grandmother spent most of her teenage years while her dad was the light keeper. It's a small island only accessible by boat or ferry and home to a large art community. David and I love to take long day trips down there in the off season. We leave early in the AM to make the hour long drive down Hatteras Island through the villages of Rodanthe, Salvo and Waves, to the end of the island. There we join other vehicles in line for the 20 min ferry ride to Ocracoke. Once there, we have a late brunch at The Flying Melon or The Back Porch and then take a stroll through the village and stopping at our favorite galleries. We always end the day with a visit to the lighthouse where I find myself imagining what it was like for my grandmother to live there. The island has really grown in popularity and ever since Southern Living magazine listed Ocracoke as one of the top beaches in the South, it's been very crowded in the summer months. We now only go during off seasons which is really when it's at it's most beautiful. I was able to get a peak through the trees of this guy sitting at their front door, knocking on the window. I got my camera and was able to sneak up and snap this picture of him using a telephoto lens (felt pretty creepy while I was doing it. LOL). Seems our neighbor feeds him and if she's late he lets her know he's waiting. My favorite thing about the photo is the orange cat that's laying in the chair in the upper right corner totally undisturbed by the visitor. Not a fan of feeding racoons, but his persistence was funny. Growing up as an only child she lived for summers when she and her mom would travel to Beaufort, NC where they would spend the summer with her grandmother and all her cousins. She was very close to her cousins calling them her "summer family" and was very sad when Sept. rolled around. After her grandmother died, the house remained in the family well into my teenage years and the summer gathering tradition continued. Got there and it was pouring but we still had a wonderful time. Monday I took a walk to get some photos of the laurel blooms. I went to Barnes and Noble on Tues to get some books and ended up with the Nook. I love it! Wed I had an appt with the Ob/Gyn to discuss HRT and came home with 2 scripts. Hope these do the trick. Thur we packed up and headed to Pine Island for the holiday. We got there just as the sun was setting over the sound and had a beautiful view of it from the back porch. I cheated on this week's page tho and only used photos from one (very special) day. Now that the wedding's over, I'm going to focus on improving my photo skills... Journaling What a hectic, wonderful week! The wedding was amazing and Ashley looked so beautiful. She and Chris are so perfect together and I’m really happy she was able to have the wedding of her dreams. The weather couldn’t have been any better - 72 and no humidity. The day started early with nail and hair appts. Ash and the girls got ready at the hotel and we had lunch (and mimosas!) brought in. We all got to Harmony Hall around 1:30 and I spent most of the next few hours making sure the musicans, photo booth people and photographers set up. Jill and Victor at HH did an outstanding job with the decor. Finally it was time. Ash (who had declared this a “no crying” wedding) started bawling when she read the card that Chris had delivered to her. I started when I saw David walking her down the aisle. In true Chris fashion, during the vows he reached over and wiped a tear off Ash's cheek. That of course made her (and me) cry more... After cocktails and dinner, the party got very lively and ended on a high note with a surpise fireworks display that David and Chris arranged. We had a brunch for Chris, Ash and the bridal party along with family and some out of town guests the next AM and then said goodbye and headed home to VA. Sunday I finished up the seating chart(s) and Monday I picked up the pearls I bought for Ash. Tuesday we headed up to PA to get ready for the wedding. On Wed. Ash and I picked up the grooms cake she ordered for Chris. He’s a huge Eagles fan and the cake turned out great. Wed I had a luncheon for the bridesmaids and some of the out of town guests. The weather was not nice but I was glad the rain came on Thur and Friday instead of Sat!. Friday was the rehearsal and everything went as planned.. We had the rehearsal dinner at Molly Branigan’s - an Irish pub downtown. Ash surprised Chris with the cake and he loved it. Big bonus was that it tasted good too. The party broke up about 11PM with everyone heading home to get some rest before the “big day”. Journaling Busy week! Saturday was the opening day for the Farmer’s Market. It was a 2 day event and on Sunday they had a blue grass band playing. Lots of fun! Monday thru Thur I attended a regional meeting/retreat at the Wintergreen Resort in the VA Blue Ridge Mts. It’s only a couple of hours away but so beautiful. Julee, Liz and I roomed together in a beautiful 3 bdrm condo that was at the top of the mt. What gorgeous views!! It was wonderful to sit out on the deck and drink coffee in the AM and share a bottle of wine at night. We had short meetings each day and then were free to enjoy the resort on our own. We got to choose a company paid activity - golf, hike or SPA. Not a hard choice for me! On Thur I enjoyed a 2 hour body scrub and massage before heading home. This AM I finally decided just to finish it . My mother used to recite this poem by James Whitcomb Riley to us. We lived in an old home and during the day we used to play and build forts in the third story attic. At night however, you couldn't have paid me to go up there. Partially due to this poem and partially due to my brother telling me that there were ghosts. I saw this poem a few years ago in a Lands End Christmas Catalog of all places, and it brought back lots of memories. I can still hear my mom reciting it to us. My sister has a pic of her reading a book to the three of us and she's sending it so I can do a companion page. That's about all I've been doing the past week, but I did manage to keep taking my daily photos! Journaling I sat on the deck Thursday AM and watched as a tiny spider spent aboout 5 min. trying to cast a line from one side of the railing to the other. Not sure if he ever finished. Mary Ann has found a new favoite spot to sleep - David’s lap. It’s spring and that means the wood bees are out. I just amazes me how they create such perfectly round holes. David however, is more annoyed than amused. We finally got the hummingbird feeder put up on Sunday and it wasn’t there but a couple of min. before this guy showed up. It’s good to have them back! I don’t know how I’d start the AM without my Keurig coffeemaker - good coffee fast. I was going to take a break from working on wedding stuff to work on the AAM challenge and photograph the contents of my purse until I realized that I was working out of 3 of them and there was waaaay too much stuff to shoot. Thursday was spent with last min. packing. Friday we dropped the animals at their respective kennels and headed for NJ/NY. Had dinner and spent the night in Newark. Sat. AM we boarded the Explorer of the Seas and got a birds eye view of Manhatten and the Statue of Liberty as we set sail. Sunday was a relaxing, slightly chilly day at sea which we spent exploring the ship and eating. Monday found us docked at the Royal Dockyard in Bermuda and we caught an early ferry tour around the island. The island and homes were just beautiful. We got off in Hamilton and enjoyed lunch in an English pub overlooking Front street. We then made our way back to the ship via public bus so we could see the South Shore and the beautiful beaches. Tuesday was my birthday which we celebrated by exploring the Royal Dockyard and seeing all the sights. This area is just lovely and full of historic stone buildings. We stopped in the Glassworks studio and visited the Rum Cake factory where we purchased some to take home. We had afternoon tea at the Frog and Onion Pub before heading back on board for a birthday dinner at Portofinos. Wednesday was another relaxing day at sea. The week went too fast and I’m ready to go back. Love Lynn's templates! Journaling April 1st and the daytime temp hit 83! No foolin’. Later in the week we’re supposed to break 90. Way too early for that! Even tho we never get seasick, I always take a mini aresenal of remedies “just in case”. It still amazes me how such a big cat can balance on such a small surface. She really has some fancy footwork. David came back from PA Sat. PM and brought a pot of tulips and a hyacinth. The house smells wonderful! Rufus loves stalking the birds a the feeder. Never gets much futher than just wishful thinking on her part. Couldn’t resist the impulse to buy them so I bought some plants and planted the window box on the garage. Hope I don’t regret my early start.....Thursday was spent wrapping up a project for work and doing laundry so we can finish packing. Two more days! My goal was to clean it up and finish several projects that had been left undone. I ended up doing some of that but mostly “playing” with tools, techniques that I had fogotten about....On Sunday I took a break and tried yet another recipe in the quest for the perfect butter/sugar cookie. Eureeka! I found it! The perfect butter cookie recipe given to me by a pastry chef friend. I broke down on Monday and bought the ferns for the porch. I may regret it if the weather turns cold again. I also got a mum plant for the patio just because it looked so bright and “springie” (and it was cheap!)
