I loved the big photo so thought I'd give it a go with some more of Ali's great word art. I caught this shot of my mom on our yearly hiking trip; it seemed perfect for a quote that remarks on the vastness of the desert landscape. Text reads: “I walk out onto a point from which I can look down at the river, nearly straight below. From up here the sound of the river, until now a permanent part of my auditory background, is no longer perceptible, and the desert silence takes on a deeper dimension. The sound of nothingness? ‘In the desert,’ wrote Balzac, somewhere, ‘there is all and there is nothing. God is there and man is not.” —Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire In this Project (all DD): Ali Edwards Hello Beautiful Brushes and Stamps Lynn Grieveson Hint at it No. 03 Brushes Maplebrook Studios Frostproof Solids Paper Pack Katie Pertiet Tabbed Dates Brushes and Stamps Mapmakers Paper Pack (overlaid) Fonts: Interstate Thanks for looking! ; )

21 comments http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=169508&title=desert-reflections&cat=500 http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showphoto.php?photo=169508&title=desert-reflections&cat=500 Sun, 08 Jan 2012 22:52:47 +0000 CT Scraplift - Steph

by: GoingtotheSun

Description}: Such great inspiration in Steph's gallery! Another hiking page from last summer's family trip to Yosemite NP in California. This is yet another page about a hike with my Mom. (One of those terrible "hold the camera away and shoot" shots. But I love it anyway.) I've been thinking of putting together a book for her with all the pages I've done about our trips together - it seems I've got no shortage of material! : ) Text Reads: We went to Vermont for several days when you visited in the Fall. We both thought a short hike would be a great way to see the turning trees. Our first destination was a bust: the trail was closed for bridge work. Our second chosen path wasn't meant to be either: the access road was under construction. Our third trail was finally a go. But after walking for an hour, we realized we'd been so busy talking that we missed the cutoff to the overlook! We found it on the way back, though, and after a long day of trying to hike, we finally got our mountaintop view. This story reminds me that sometimes it's not about the specific path; it's about the overall journey and most importantly, the people with whom you share it. I can't say that lifting my own layout was super-fast (I noodle things way too much), but it certainly was easier than starting from scratch on something new. (That said, I think I still like my original layout better - oh well!) Anyway, my mom was visiting last week, so this page is about a hike we took at the Delaware Water Gap. Text Reads: On your recent visit, we headed to Delaware Water Gap for a short walk. I had volunteered to fact-check several hikes for the trail conference and you graciously agreed to be my assistant. We dutifully compared the written description to the actual trail and took notes on every little detail. It was fun – but boy it sure did take a while! Yet despite the note-taking hassle, the endless rocks and the noisy crowds, we enjoyed just about every minute of the trip. Thanks, Mom. You’re the best hiking partner a girl could ask for! I had a blast drawing inspiration from Doris' gallery. Seriously, I could spend the rest of my scraplifting "career" just getting ideas from her gallery - wow, what talent! In the end, I chose Absolutely Zero Desire for my scraplift. I loved the list idea with the small photo and word art, but took a different direction and used Katie's wonderful new word art (on special this past Thursday). My layout is all about the deep and wonderful connection I have with my family and our summer hiking trips. Apologies to anyone who's read my other hiking pages (if I sound like a broken record), but I just can't say enough about how thankful I am for those in my family who share my love of travel and the outdoors. I am truly blessed. And to my DD family - thanks for putting up with all my "I love nature and hiking" pages. : ) Photo is from our recent trip to Yosemite this September - on the Cathedral Lake hike. We set up the camera on a rock and hit delay - it worked like a charm! Text reads: Funny: Laughing so hard we cried playing spit in Rainier and reading the park ranger book together in Yosemite. Foolish: Missing the junction on the Sequoia hike and doing an extra mile downhill. Oh well! Fantastic: Hiking across Athabasca Glacier and running into a moose on the Glacier trail - it just doesn’t get more amazing than that. Faithful: Singing songs together coming down the Long’s Peak trail in Rocky Mountain. . . in the dark. And Aunt Dorothy coming uphill to guide us with her flashlight. Friendly: Saying “hello” and smiling at everyone we meet along the way. Family: Being thankful for each other and the opportunity to spend time together. And that Williston, North Dakota is experiencing a population boom? We learned a lot from the roads we traveled, the towns we visited and the things we saw along the way. Rather than fight it, I'm just going with it for now. : ) So apologies to the designers (especially Pattie) for not using their wonderful products to the upmost potential for this challenge. All the kits are in there, but only just! This photo is from a hiking trip I took with my girlfriends in 2004. After hearing me rave about hiking in Glacier NP, they were sold on the idea. So we went. And it rained. . . the WHOLE time. We marched through the rain on sodden trails and didn't see the tops of the mountains all week. (sigh!) But what we lost in awe-inspiring scenery, we more than made up for in good company and great time spent together. So even though I didn't "share" my favorite park with my friends quite as I'd hoped, we still had fun - and that's the real beauty. I think this obsession stems from the fact that I've been glued to the computer (inside) working all week. . . this kind of schedule always make me dream about being outdoors, and especially about being in the mountains! I took a pretty philosophical take on this challenge (and apologies if I'm missing the greater idea here by not being more all-encompassing in my list). That said, there have been times in my life when I was struggling with a situation or an emotional upheaval and have found salve for my soul by being out in nature. I guess I find it easier to let things go and ease my mind when I'm surrounded by amazing scenery. (My mom snapped this shot of me on the trail in the Canadian Rockies). I've decided to print it at 8x8 and there's just too much text to fit on a single page! Anyway, this is the story of my last day in Japan - mostly about the fish market. If you ever go to Tokyo, be sure not to miss it (and wear old shoes!) Text on this page reads: My last day in Tokyo. I got up and going early on Friday so I could make the most of my partial day before we had to leave for the airport that afternoon. First on the site-seeing docket was a long-anticipated trip to the famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Central Tokyo. The largest wholesale fish market in the world, the Tsukiji market sells about 2246 tons of fish daily and specializes in maguro tuna. I didn’t arrive in time for the tuna auctions (those start before 4 a.m. and are officially closed to the public), but I did see plenty of buying, selling and prep work while I was there. As one guidebook succinctly puts it: “If it lives in the sea, it’s probably for sale in the Central Fish Market.” No joke. Wandering the endless aisles in the warehouse market, I saw all kinds of fascinating fish, plus mussels, squid, octopus, eel, crabs and even fugu (blowfish). Since I had done a fair share of reading about the market before I went, I knew to expect a working dock environment and not a clean, pristine showplace for tourists. I wasn’t disappointed and was very glad I wore my running shoes (although rubber boots would have been an even better choice). The docks and stalls were a blur of activity with loaders, fork-lifts, and mini-trucks zipping by everywhere. After getting over the initial shock – and realizing that yes, tourists really were welcome to just “walk on in” and wander – I took special care to make sure I wasn’t in the way. But with narrow, crowded walkways, it was a constant challenge. I spent over an hour walking through the market’s marine area before making my way over to the Outer Market where all sorts of food-related items are for sale. There were whole stalls selling only dishware – everything from small bowls, and sauce dishes to sets of chopsticks and chopstick holders. If you ever go to Tokyo, be sure not to miss it (and wear old shoes!) Text on this page reads: I bought some children’s bowls and chopsticks for the kids and then made a quick pass through the vegetable market. There were lots of unfamiliar things for sale there as well, but nothing compared to the excitement in the fish area. Next stop: a fish market sushi breakfast at one of the oldest stands in the city. There are about two rows of restaurant stalls at the market and each seats only about a dozen diners at a time. So the wait is long. I gave one line a go for about 45 minutes, but finally had to give up because I was short on time. Disappointed, I headed back to the subway station to catch the train to Ginza. On my way, I passed another sushi restaurant that was listed in my book and was pleased to see there was no wait. It wasn’t “the oldest or the best known” place and it wasn’t right in the market, but it was close enough. I sat down at the counter and ordered a set plate (chef’s selection) and watched as the sushi chefs expertly prepared it all. I wish Michael could have been there as we would have had tremendous fun guessing what was on the plate and taking turns trying the different delicacies. The presentation was a work of art; the crowning glory: a whole raw prawn, head and tail included, strapped to a piece of rice. He was truly a sight to behold. In the end, I tried almost everything (including the prawn) and it made for a perfect end to my last morning in Tokyo. Thoroughly stuffed, I made my way to Ginza for a quick tour, then over to Shibuya to do some last-minute shopping at Oriental Bazaar. This is a truly fascinating store and I had tremendous fun buying souvenirs for family and friends. I made it back to the hotel just in time to pack up and get ready to head to the airport for our 4:30 p.m. flight. As we rode to Narita, I just kept thinking about all the things I’d like to see and do on our next trip to Tokyo. We’ll see. . . This "simple" design format makes it easier, but all the writing is slowing me down. : ) (Denise, my hat's off to you and everyone else who's done a travel book that involved lots of journaling. Wow!) Anyway, I finally finished my recap of day 3, my day-trip to Hakone. (Image is from the Library of Congress and depicts Hakone in the 1800s). Journaling (if you're interested): After two days in the city, I opted to take a day-trip out of town. Although Japan is a relatively small country and bullet trains make travel to other places quick and easy, with only one day to travel and sightsee, I decided to go to Fuli-Hakone-Izu Park, about 60 miles from Tokyo. I left on the 8:53 a.m. train from Shinjuku station, which is the busiest rail station in Japan and the place everyone always thinks of when they mention the spectacle of rush hour in Tokyo. I took the “Romance Car” to Hakone Yumoto station, the departure point for the grand circuit through the Hakone area. I was initially a little nervous about doing this trip on my own since it involves many different transfers and connections as you go up and over the mountain, then across the lake. However, after reading a lot about it, I decided it was worth a shot going solo, as my other option was to go with a tour group. I’m so glad I opted to go it alone, since this allowed me to spend my time as I liked and on my own schedule. From the Hakone station, I boarded the Tozan Railway, an electric tram that zigzags up the mountainside to Gora. There are numerous little resort towns and spas along the way, including Chokoku-no-Mori, where I got off for the Hakone Open-Air Museum. The museum features 20th century sculpture in a spectacular setting of forest glens, ponds and open gardens. Wow – what a place! After lunch at the museum, I boarded the tram to finish my ride to Gora. Next up on the transportation circuit: a cable car up the side of Mount Hakone to Sounzan. This was a short ride and from there I boarded yet another kind of transport – a ropeway gondola that climbs over the top of the mountain and eventually down to Lake Ashi, on the other side. Although the weather was overcast, there were expansive views of the park from the gondola; I can only imagine how breathtaking this might be on a clear day. As it was, Mt. Fuji, the “Holy Mountain” remained thoroughly encased in clouds, a grand sight for another trip, I guess! The highest point on the ropeway is Owakudani, the “Great Boiling Valley.” This area is full of thermal springs and sulfur pools, and I took a short nature walk up the mountain to see (and smell) the sights. Much like Yellowstone, the landscape looks a little unworldly, with golden-hued rocks and milky blue pools that contrast beautifully against the surrounding green mountainside. Next: back on the ropeway down to Lake Ashi, where I traded trams and trains for a big pirate ship that sails across the lake to a small village called Hakone-Machi. Then, last but not least, a short, crowded bus ride down the mountain back to the main train station, where I caught the Romance Car back to Tokyo. I finally arrived at Shinjuku station around 7:00 p.m. – just in time to catch the end of commuter rush-hour. Wow! The traffic and sheer number of people traveling through the station almost makes Penn Station seem tame. Even though it was a long day, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip out of the city. I didn’t see Mt. Fuji, but I did get to ride trains, trams, ropeways and boats all in the same day. So overall – a very fun adventure! Roosevelt was a great conservationist in his time and although he was happy to hunt just about anything with four legs, he also understood the importance of saving wildlife and wild places for future generations. Yellowstone was one of his favorite parks and, as president, he presided over the dedication of the north entrance gate. The inscription on the gate reads, "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People." This image is of Mammoth Hot Springs, in the northern part of the park. During my short trip, I took a day away from the city to visit Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It was a long travel day to make the classic Hakone circuit in the park, involving travel on 2 trains, 1 electric tram, 1 cable car, 1 ropeway, 1 boat and 1 bus. Whew! But it was worth it. Besides the scenery, one other standout was a visit to this open-air sculpture museum. Text (on opposite page) reads: Beautiful works in a spectacular setting From Hakone Yumoto train station, I boarded the Hakone Tozan Railway that climbs up the mountain to Gora. This electric tram zigzags and switchbacks up the hill, stopping at hot springs and small resort villages along the way. At Chokoku-no-Mori, I got off to see this open-air museum. I thought I would spend an hour or so here; I spent over two! From left: (1) One of the more colorful pieces in the museum’s Green Plaza area. (2) Symphonic Sculpture, by Gabriel Loire, didn’t seem very impressive from outside; it just looked like a concrete tower with glass. But on the inside, it was absolutely spectacular. (3) The museum’s sign out front. (4) One of several children’s exhibits. Apologies to my husband for not getting the nod this one. . . I gave it serious consideration, but finally decided that I'd rather tell the story of my two best friends. The map shows where we all came from and where we've gone. The timeline at the bottom marks major "roomie" events during the course of our friendship. Journaling reads: Robin was born in ___ , Iowa. Andrea hails from ___ , west of Ames. I grew up 1,000 miles south in ___, Texas. In another country, almost. Andrea was a 4-H-er and loved the State Fair. (She still does!) Robin spent her high school Friday nights cruising the town strip. I was a devout vegetarian who worked at Whole Foods and went to art house movies. As a teenager, if someone had asked me if I’d like to visit Iowa someday, I might have replied, “why?” If they had told me I’d eventually go to school there, I probably would have laughed. And if they had told me I’d meet my two best friend there, I would have thought, “what could I possibly have in common with two gals from Iowa?” Well, I did go to college in Iowa, and I did meet my two best friends there. (As it turns out, I have a LOT in common with two kids from the midwest.) As roommates, we shared late-night dinners and early morning gossip; we hashed out school frustrations and nurtured each other’s broken hearts. College was what brought us together, but the support we gave one another was what saw us all through. Since graduation, we’ve all gone different directions (even if that meant staying close to home). But despite our upbringings, changing career choices, and post-college moves, we’re still best friends. So while I still think of myself as a Texan at heart, I wouldn’t trade my Iowa days or my Iowa friends for all the art house flicks in Austin. With age comes wisdom – and the knowledge that distances don’t really matter. . . but true friendships do.
