Now that I am "all grown up" and learned lessons from the things I have done. I decided to go for it! Hopefully I won't be judged too harshly for stupidity of youth! Journaling says: I looked back at parts of my life and I am so very lucky to be alive today. As a young adult I engaged in so many high risk behaviors. I hitch-hiked all around Tacoma (and this is during the timeframe that Ted Bundy was killing women in our area). I took recreational drugs. I jumped off 50 foot cliffs into mining strip pits in Indiana. I participated in automobile races on Vassault Street. I never wore a seatbelt. I took off with LaQuitta on a motorcycle ride with two guys that we didn’t even know. I don’t know how I escaped harm because I put myself into harm’s way all of the time. As with all young adults, I thought that I was invincible. I survived only by the grace of God. Sometimes it is very hard to be honest about the mistakes you have made in your life. I have never hidden my mistakes from my children. I would hope that because I have done these things that I can say from experience that it is not okay to do drugs! It is not okay to hitch-hike! It is not okay to put yourself in situations that you may not survive! I had a guardian angel for sure. Because I should not be alive today with all of the very stupid things I have done. **Note to grandchildren: I decided to do this page and be honest. I want you to know that Nana is human and I have made mistakes. I want you to learn from my mistakes. It is NOT okay to do the things your Nana has done. I've been so busy! But I am trying to get back into the swing of things and finish my "All about Me" book that I've been working on for two years. I have done the challenges and also added some pages of my own. Here is what the journaling says: Or more accurately, a herd of cows. It was December 14th 1978. I had borrowed Jeff’s truck to go and see my boyfriend Danny and I was just heading back out to his house. It was late, sometime after midnight. I was traveling along the long country road and a deer ran out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, which caused the truck to fishtail on a patch of black ice. I kept trying to get control of the truck. It felt like I was in slow motion. First I spun to the right, and then to the left. The truck careened madly around the road for what seemed like hours before it finally flipped over an embankment. The truck rolled front over back several times landing 30 feet down facing the road. I was in shock (that is the only explanation I have for my actions following the accident). When I landed, I was slammed into the steering wheel knocking the breath out of me. It hurt! My first thought was that the truck was going to “blow up”, so I turned off the headlights. (See what I mean about stupid actions?) Now I was virtually hidden from any cars that may have travelled the road above. I sat for a minute in silence and then I noticed that I had landed in a field full of cattle. I decided I had to get away from the cows as I was afraid of them (See! Stupid thoughts. Because I am not now, nor have I ever been, afraid of cows!) So, I climbed out of the truck and up the embankment to the road above. I was in so much pain. My stomach, legs, head and arm all hurt. I walked over a mile to a house down the road. I knocked on their door and asked to use a phone to call my brother. As I waited for Jeff, they allowed me to lay on their couch. When Jeff arrived he took me into the clinic in town. When I arrived there, the nurse found that I had barely any blood pressure. There was no Doctor on duty, so she called one in. When the doctor arrived, he deemed that they could not wait for an ambulance to come from Spokane. So he put me in the back seat of his car and drove me himself!! He was driving about 90 miles an hours. Boy was I frightened! When we got to the hospital they did emergency exploratory surgery to see where I was bleeding internally. Well, when I hit the steering wheel, I ruptured my spleen. They said it was a miracle that I had lived so long with a ruptured spleen, especially since I had walked a mile, waited on my brother, gone to the clinic and finally been driven from Cheney to Spokane. So... you see, if not for the cows, I would have stayed in the truck and died. credit: mask by Katie Pertiet color inspiration paper 12311 by Katie other: brown stitching by Anna Aspnes

21 comments Thu, 01 May 2014 22:32:59 +0000 First Day of Kindergarten

by: Dawneephay

Description}: I have so many photos to catch up on that I have been feeling overwhelmed. Just because you are an adult and have children doesn’t mean that you are “grown up”. We bought Shawna an Atari 2600 for Christmas in 1980. Home video consoles were fairly new. They didn’t have Nintendo, or Xbox 360 or Playstation. Cliff and I were like two little kids. We bought the console at the beginning of December and for the next three weeks, we would wait until Shawna went to bed and then we would unwrap the package (carefully by removing strategically placed tape). Then we would play the Atari half the night! Cliff liked “Space Invaders” But, I liked “Atari Circus” and “Adventure”. Looking back, the graphics were terrible! But it was such a new experience! Shawna loved her gift on Christmas morning. Little did she know that her parents had a hundred hours of practice already. No wonder we were so good at the games! Even now, thirty-three years later, I don’t recall if we ever told Shawna. Would I do it again? Heck yah! I’m still a little kid at heart! scraplifted from;title=wavey-gravy-21&cat=1236 (The Gravy Bowl Incident by Squeak) credits: Studio dd Anyday December borders Katie pertiet Vintage Christmas extras Tag frames no 2 Blitzen snowflake Leaf charms stitches

4 comments Mon, 23 Dec 2013 22:16:32 +0000 AMM: My mom and me

by: Dawneephay

Description}: Another page for my aam book. I am terrible at journaling (absolutely hate it! I am not a writer of words!) Here is what is says: Growing up I always thought that my mother and I were so different. I swore that I was not going to be like her. Now that I am older I see many similarities. First of all, I look more like her every day. When I was younger all I could see was dad when I looked in the mirror (I guess I could not get past the McCulley nose!) As a teenager, I resented the fact that she made me babysit my siblings all the time. And then I did the same thing with Shawna. I hated when she would stand up for herself in the grocery store (”Get me the Manager”) and now I do the same thing. Like her, I struggle with weight problems. I tend to keep my problems and sorrows to myself. She did too. I don’t think I ever saw my mother cry. I don’t let people see me cry. Mom was not a hugger, neither am I. Like her, I do not like people in my “personal space”. But I do express my love for my family with words and actions. Mom and I tended to “butt heads” a lot. I am very stubborn and so was she! But like her, I forgive easily and never hold a grudge. I love to read. She loved to read (though she read magazines and I read books) She was a very proud person and did not like to ask others for help. I am the same way. She went out of her way to help strangers. I can’t count the amount of times she invited a “stray” in for dinner or a place to stay. I get my compassion from her. I hate to see someone that is homeless and give money to strangers (even if they may be scamming me). I adopt stray animals all of the time. I have a kind heart just like my mom. I don’t think that mom cared what anyone thought of her. I am very unlike her in that way. I care about what people think, perhaps too much! I do not like to leave the house without make-up on. Mom never wore makeup. Mom was a fabulous cook and loved to prepare meals every day. I can cook pretty well, but hate to do so on a daily basis. Mom and I were not particularly close, like in the best friend kind of way. Don’t get me wrong. I adored my mother. My world revolved around her. But.. I couldn’t go talk to her about personal things in my life. I don’t know why. It wasn’t anything that she did. I guess it was just me. I always thought that she was so hard on me. I think I was always jealous of Melodee and felt that mom loved her the most. Now I know that is not true. My mom was very proud of my artistic ability. She thought I was way better than I actually am! The main lesson that my mother taught me is that family comes first. When all is said and done - family is the constant in your life. I am so glad that she ingrained that in me. She was a mama Grizzly bear when it came to her children and grandchildren. We both raised children on our own. I learned a lot from my mother. Without her, I would not be who I am today. We were alike in many ways and different in many more. I miss her every day of my life. I wish that she was alive so that I could become her “best friend”, so that I could relish in our differences and bask in the warmth of our “sameness”. My mom was a good person and I strive to be like her in that way. credits: Studio dd Readymade banners for mom Rainbow clusters Katie pertiet Bead scatterings Merry & bright alpha (recolored) Christmas memories alpha (recolored) Krafty canvas Make your own postmark Felt hearts by Patty Knox

6 comments Mon, 23 Dec 2013 20:21:44 +0000 AAM: My Jobs

by: Dawneephay

Description}: I really miss the AAM challenges.
