The story starts here:;title=story-scrap-challenge&cat=500 Journaling: Milton served two tours of duty in the United States Navy. He first enlisted on 30 Aug. 1915. He served on the USS Dakota, the USS San Diego and the USS Pittsburgh. Two of these ships have some historic significance. The USS San Diego was the only ship of its class sunk in World War I. We do not know if Milton was on the San Diego when it was torpedoed (perhaps) and sank in July 1918. Only six crew members lost their lives in this incident, so it is possible he was there. While it certainly happened before his time in the military, in 1911 the USS Pittsburgh was the first ship to have an airplane land on its deck and the first use of a tail hook, paving the way to the modern aircraft carrier. After his discharge on 29 Aug. 1919, Milton remained in the reserves and was an instructor at Naval Station Great Lakes training center near Chicago. Judging from the caps the young men are wearing this photograph (Milton on the left) was taken neat there. In World War II Milton re-enlisted in the Navy 28 Nov. 1942, at age 46, and remained through the duration of the war. He was discharged 9 Sep. 1945, seven days after Japan’s formal surrender on 2 Sep. 1945. Shortly after his discharge he began his career with ATF. Once Milton's story started to emerge, it put my mother’s memories into perspective and historic context. As an ATF agent he could well have arrived in town in a “paddy wagon” and thrilled/terrified his young niece and nephew giving them rides around the town of Norman, Oklahoma. I had begun Emmy's story earlier and now am going back and filling in the pieces. Journaling: As noted, it is easy to overlook Emmy Rogers when laying out the family story, as hers was a short and bittersweet chapter. She and James had five children. These were: Clifford H. Rogers (1894 - 1922); Milton H. Rogers (1896 - 1948); Elinor E. Rogers, (1899 - 2002), Herbert J. Rogers (1902 - 1949) and Melitta L. Rogers, (1904 - 1974). She must have had a sense of fun as you can see in these family photos where she, her children and her sister Martha were dressed in the costumes of an earlier age in a pageant on one of the family member’s farms. She was, as were so, many women of that time, trained in the use of watercolors and was an accomplished artist. She was her husband’s business partner in the venture at Watter’s Park. And she must have spent a lot of time rearing her children alone, as her husband James was a railroad conductor and was frequently gone from home. And while their home in Watters Park was only 8 miles from Austin, we need to remember the effort it took in those days before the automobile to make that journey, especially with five children. From her scrapbook (with its hand-painted frames around each picture) it was clear that she was close to her family and extended family. At times, her younger brother Fritz and several cousins boarded with the family (1900 census). But Emmy was being stalked by a terrible scourge - tuberculosis. Those of us alive in the 21st century in the United States cannot truly appreciate how devastating and widespread this disease was. At times it had been one of the leading causes of death in adults between the ages of 18-35. It had been looked on in the 19th century as a “romantic disease” that heightened the sensitivity of sufferers. And it was said to allow a “good death” as it gave people time to arrange their affairs. One wonders if Emmy saw any “good” in the death sentence she received in 1908 when her youngest child was only 4. What must it have felt like, as a 34 year old mother, to know that you would not live to see your children grown? Your oldest two perhaps who were 14 and 12, but your babies? What must it have felt like to have to give up your home and move back in with your mother? How ironic it is that Albert Calmette and Camill Guerin had developed a vaccine in 1906 but it would not be widely used until 1921 in Europe and not until after WWII in the United States. And the identification of streptomycin as an effective treatment in 1944 would come years too late for Emmy. She died 23 July 1915, from pulmonary tuberculosis, at her mother’s home in Austin, Texas. It has taken me this long to find the story JOurnaling: Another common theme in all the family stories about Clifford was the tragedy of him dying and leaving a young wife behind. The newspaper article about his death says he had a wife “back East.” And the back of his tombstone is engraved: My Sweetheart Husband, To Live in Hearts We Leave Behind is Not to Die. Was he in fact killed on their wedding day? Now that we knew the story of the boxcar, that became less likely but what was the story? It took another five years to find the answer to this question. A relative located a book by Clifford B Casey titled Alpine Texas Then and Now that had a detailed description of the trial and hanging of Clifford’s assailant. In the article it mentions the town in which Clifford was married and the date. And from this snippet of information it was possible to trace the “wife back East. On 1 Jan, 1922, Clifford H Rogers married Anna H Siegel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Anna, who was born 16 Jan. 1898, was sixteen days from her 24th birthday. The couple had been married barely two weeks when Clifford headed to California where he had a job waiting. It appears that he went to Austin to visit family before catching the train west where he met his tragic fate. And so many women she seems to have dropped out of the historic record. How did a boy from Texas meet a girl in Philadelphia? How did they have time for a courtship? That question may remain forever unanswered. You only need 3 to move up to a higher class. But my Novice Standard runs were a different story. Hey, can I help it if I am more creative than the judge who designed the course? Well, my second trial was in Holly Springs Mississippi. And just let me tell you, boy did I have fun there. This trial was really COOL. They had 2 judges so the classes were competing side by side, with the Masters level dog on one side and the Novice level dogs on the other side. We were in a big horse arena - a dirt filled pit with concrete sides and bleachers with just a barrier down the middle to divide the two rings. But a little barrier does not stop a creative fellow like me. Mama got me positioned at the tire. She gave me the cue to run and we took off. I sailed through the tire, up the dog walk and then....well, I was supposed to turn and jump but freedom beckoned. I went straight ahead, jumped up the concrete side, slipped under the metal rail and ran down the walkway in front of the bleachers. But I knew I was there to do agility so I jumped back down into the arena but on the other side of the barrier. And now, I was running with the Masters dogs. It was awesome! There was a border collie running and he was doing a great job. So, I just followed him. Mama looked up and there I was, trailing him right up the A-frame. My nose was touching his tail. And she couldn't get to me because of the barrier between the rings. I know border collies can be kind of snarky sometimes (they are SO serious about things) so I jumped out of the ring instead of finishing the course with him. And Mama’s friends pounced on me! They frog marched me back to my crate. It was sort of an ignominious end to a spectacular run. Carl's journaling is: Remember my stories from my first time at Carthage, MO about making up my own courses for Standard? Well, I have to tell you - I think I still make better courses than the judges do. I am getting better at staying with my Mama, but occasionally I just have to go a little crazy - or a lot crazy as the case might be. At this trial, was it my fault there was a little break in the fence? And that there was a delicious pile of horse poo right outside that break? I promise I would have come back into the ring after I rolled! The judge just had no sense of humor. And Sunday, it rained! Isn’t this mud skirt I’m wearing great? Journaling: At the time of the crucifixion, the dogwood had reached the size of the mighty oak tree. So strong and firm was the wood that it was chosen as the timber for Jesus' cross. To be used for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the dogwood. While nailed upon it, Jesus sensed this, and in his compassion said. "Because of your pity for my suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used for a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender, bent, and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross–two long and two short petals. "In the center of the outer edge of each petal will be the print of nails. We had one of those winter days where the temperature rose into the 50's and we spent a good part of the day working in the yard. But we wanted to take some time to walk Carl on a trail in our town that meanders by a little creek. So we changed into our walking clothes, which in David's case included tight biking pants. We got to the trail, piled out of the car, got Carl out of his crate and decided to compare Fitbits to see how many steps we were starting with. And David realized his was gone! We rushed back to the house to search for it while we still had daylight. There we were, crawling under bushes, searching all the places we had worked, even to dragging the fishpond in case it had fallen in - all to no avail. (Luckily, it still counts steps while one is crawling on all fours.) So, somewhat sadly, we head back to the walking trail. It is 1.5 miles out and back so a good, easy 3 mile walk. We were into the home stretch, about 2.75 miles into the walk and suddenly David gets this very strange look on his face and then begins to laugh like a lunatic. Now, what you have to understand is that when you reach 10,000 steps, the Fitbit VIBRATES. True to form his Fitbit begin the sensory notification that he had reached his goal. And that is how we discovered that as he pulled on his tight biking shorts, the band on the Fitbit had come undone. It was nestled securely in his shorts and you can probably guess just exactly where. You know, he hates it when I tell this story! Carl here. I had a really great idea. I got on Facebook and challenged all my buddies to post Doggie Selfies. We have to have a little help from our humans ‘cause we don’t have fingers so that makes it hard to hold the camera unless you hold it in your teeth. My grandmother, seen here at age 16, was a very complicated person - so outwardly sure of herself and yet, so damaged by her past. Journaling: Like the butterfly, you emerged from your cocoon at age sixteen presenting a brave, beautiful face to the world. You walked away from your old life without a backward glance, or so at least you would have had us believe. On the surface, the frightened orphan was no more. You spread your wings and took flight into your new life. But at what cost? One has to wonder, does the butterfly who entrances us with her beauty carry - like you - the memory of the scared caterpillar deep inside? I view them with mixed emotions. On the one hand I am happy they have returned; on the other hand I worry about the possible damage they are doing to themselves. Our lake was the site of a massive oil spill from a break in the Exxon Pegasus pipeline. Allegedly it has been cleaned up, but I still wonder if we will see long term effects from contaminated fish in the migratory birds and the waterfowl that nest in the Cove - the part of the lake hardest hit.
