I found this one a bit tricky to work on, wearing my old back-up glasses with their outdated prescription while waiting for my broken nose to heal before seeing the eye doctor about a new pair—thank heaven for Elements’ “magnify” function, or I might still be plugging away! The photo is similar in feel to the one featured on the last page I completed for the book; I should probably pick just one, but I'm thinking—in the interests of getting the book finished—that maybe I can use both by simply separating them by several pages. As for this LO, it was initially inspired by Katie's recent series of Christmas-themed pages with kraft paper backgrounds, but instead of capturing the lovely clean, graphic feel of Katie's pages it seems to have drifted off into "grunge land" somewhere along the way— but that's okay, because, this way, it reminds me of my mom's collection of Christmasey stuff (ornaments and decorations of every description, many dating back to the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, some still stored between Christmases in the now-worn cardboard boxes which they originally came in). We hadn’t anticipated the job it would be, dealing with all of the stuff they’d left behind while at the same time trying to get our own stuff moved in. Especially with the holidays fast-approaching, I thought it important that there be at least one small oasis of calm amidst the disorder reigning in the rest of our new home, so I made it a priority to get the living room cleared of boxes and pulled together as quickly as possible, and once I’d done that my next priority was to add a few Christmasey touches. We'd had some concerns about how he was doing, and for several days had been urging him to see a doctor, but he had refused (mostly, I think, because he feared his doctor would want to put him in the hospital and he was determined to continue his daily visits with Mom). Then, this past Monday, when we went to check on him, we discovered him unconscious and unresponsive on their bedroom floor. We nearly lost him when he coded in the ER; his condition has been slowly improving, but is precarious still. It's been an awfully stressful and emotional week, so when I woke during the wee small hours this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, I decided to scrap for awhile, and this is what I came up with. After having initially been told by the local doctors who sent him there to expect his stay to be an extended one, he was thrilled to learn that he was scheduled for release only four days after entering the hospital. When the big day came, my mom, brother, and I made the two-hour drive to fetch him, arriving just about the time his nurse came by to go over his post-release instructions with him and get his signature on his release papers. She'd scarcely left the room when he developed a major nosebleed, and he insisted that none of us say anything about it to anyone, worried that that might jinx his being able to leave as planned—like nobody would notice the massive wad of Kleenex he had jammed into his nostril to staunch the flow! In the end, no one made an issue of the nosebleed, so his return home wasn't held up at all. I took this shot of him with my camera phone on the drive home—his nose still plugged with Kleenex, of course!—and I just had to scrap it, even though it's not the most flattering picture, because it's so emblematic of why I worry about him. JOURNALING PLEASE...I understand that you’ve never had these kinds of major health issues to contend with before; maybe that’s why you don’t recognize the importance of taking even the little stuff seriously - but you are this family‘s rock, and Dad, I can’t stand to think that we might lose you before your time just because you were slow in consulting a doctor, or because you decided you could treat “doctors’ advice” and “just a suggestion” as synonymous, so c’mon...DON'T GAMBLE WITH YOUR HEALTH! To commemorate the special event, I took time away from my favorite photos series to scrap 20 pages for a Shutterfly book (which I intend to present to him on Father's Day), and then, borrowing a "watercolor" portrait from one of those layouts, I did this single-page layout for myself. DH and I were out with our cameras one day, wandering through a field which I can only describe as being located in "the middle of nowhere," when we happened across this bait shop sign—pretty much confirming an observation he'd made upon first coming to Wisconsin from Seattle: there is scarcely anyplace you can go in this state during fishing season where you won't find find bait for sale: in addition to countless bait shops, just about every gas station, big or small, seems to sell it, as do general retailers large and small, ranging from places like our local Ace Hardware to mom-n-pop country stores, right on down to roadside stands run by youthful entrepreneurs. The photo was taken with a 35mm SLR, on some high-speed film I'd had laying around for awhile and was wanting to use up, so the original image started out on the grainy side, and in the digital version of the image that grain translated as color noise, so I decided it was an ideal candidate for conversion to a monochrome. After starting the page in a much higher-key, I decided, just for the heck of it, to see how the photo would look set against a darker background and found that I preferred the low-key version for the added "pop" it gave to the buildings and lighter clouds.
